Re: What exactly are we doing
I think over the last few years the club has finally made that decision. While we have tried to tempt a few big names, most are around free agency so we aren't really giving up trade resources and we can still hit the top end of the draft. Even Henry last year only cost us a second round pick.
The last year we really went after players was 2019 and that ended up being for no real lasting impact on field. Since then we have realised we are still a developing team, so they have acted accordingly.
In the past the club has been guilty of trying to turn the corner from developing to challenging by bringing in external talent way too soon. Finally it seems they have understood that they need the young talent base first to build on.

Re: What exactly are we doing
You say that like just magically clubs are interested in all our players, we just have to let them go. They left half a dozen players uncontacted. That was clearly a signal that they were free to leave if their agents could drum up a trade, but there were no real takers.
Short of our top line players no-one is interested so we can't just make trades happen.
Just because we can't make trades happen doesn't mean we should go the other way and try to top up all the time. We were trading players in pretty regularly from 2011 on and look where that got us.
Re: What exactly are we doing
To isolate 2019 and the recruitment of players from other AFL Clubs and from State Leagues ignores the period leading into 2019 and the dysfunctional List demographics courtesy of that period leading into 2019
Our List currently has deficiencies (as have all Lists hence the trading) but in terms of demographics and potential it is much enhanced from 2019 and the seasons preceding 2019
Including 2019, there have been 6 completed seasons until 2024 so an ability to accrue 135 games
How many on our List have accumulated 135 games with St Kilda?
Wilkie would appear the benchmark in the growth of what St Kilda will put on the park in 2025 - which is a long way improved from the conclusion to 2018
Noting the cult figure status of Parker, so what did that say?

Re: What exactly are we doing
In the last 3 years we have replaced Coffield, Carlisle, Gresham, Ross, Dunstan, Hannebery, Lonie, Geary, Billings, Long, Ryder, Bytel, Frawley, Kent, Battle, McKernan, Allison, Highmore, McKenzie, Connolly, Clavarino, Joyce, Hunter, Alabakis, Adams, Lienert, Campbell, Peris, and possibly Membrey, Crouch, Paton & Hayes with...
Wanganeen-Milera, Windhager, Owens, Heath, Sharman, Phillipou, Cordy, Stocker, McLennan, Keeler, Hotton, Caminiti, Collard, Dow, Wilson, Henry, Hastie, Schoenmaker, Gracia, Hall, O'Connell, PLUS two top ten picks, an early second round pick, and a few more.
The strategy is clear.

All you do is ask questions. I asked you a question… what do suppose Saints do? Get in on the Baker trade? Oh wait, that hasn’t eventuated yet! Get in on Bailey Smith? Oh wait he’s nominated Geelong! What do you want us to exactly do? Give us an example. You get shitty but don’t offer any solutions. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water mate.

Re: What exactly are we doing
Because you end up with too many young players with low ceilings. Yes there's a chance that some will make it, but without the internal leadership from the senior players then you end up worse off.
Look at North now, and Carlton last 10+ years.

I'm glad that BM has finally conceded to what I've been saying for months, Battle is A-gradeD.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Mon 14 Oct 2024 9:34pmGee Battle has improved in the last couple of weeks, on 25 September you wrote this about Josh in the ‘Battle’ thread.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 14 Oct 2024 7:30pm So how have we really improved our list to go past other teams?!
We got pick 8 - which maybe an A Grader
But that just replaces an actual A Grader - Battle
We have pick 7 - first round. - so do most other clubs
We may bring in Jack Macrae - and that costs a pick
But lose Seb delisted and Crouch - retired - so that’s no gain
We delist depth
Paton, Hayes etc…
Other clubs are building their list - we are in no man’s land
Not getting any better!!!!
If our pick 7/8 don’t turn out to be A Graders - we are fkd!!!
And that is NO guarantee
Also interesting to note BMs opinion of players relies mostly on what other people rate that player and not what he sees with his own eyes

What do I want to do
Improve the list
Either with picks or players
If you don’t improve the list, you go backwards. We have last years list. Battle out. Couple of high draft picks in.
Where do we finish in 2025?

Re: What exactly are we doing
Why can't we try and get pick 3 from WC, give them picks 8 and 47 plus next year's 1st round
If that means we miss out on Macrae who cares, get kids like O'Sullivan or Reid in for the next 10 years
Just have a f****** crack Saints!!

You don't think they bumped up his votes a few days before compensation was being decided?

Re: What exactly are we doing
But really
It’s pretty simple, the formula
It’s not ‘the secret herbs and spices’ d**khead Barrett continues to blurt out
It is length of contract and dollar value of that contract that determines compensation
From what I understand
North of $850k and 5 years gets band 1 compo - after your first selection

Re: What exactly are we doing
So two top 10 picks (still can be traded) where you said yourself any of the top 10 could go number 1.
A second round selection (still can be traded).
A third round selection (still can be traded).
Adrian Cole for free for a Sandy list spot.
Father-Son Elwood Pecket hasn’t nominated us yet so we can’t bid on him (still time for the draft).
Is that not improving the list?

Re: What exactly are we doing
Now that’s something I could get around.
Or try and swap our future first 2025 for gold coasts 13 with some change. Surely load up on this draft. It’s a super draft.

32 to Brisbane for Macrae (always thought 27 was too much and dogs wouldn't accept 40+) and our 40+ picks for academy and father son if we want them.TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Tue 15 Oct 2024 11:21am Here we go

Re: What exactly are we doing
Agreed. I don’t personally like Macrae for a pick. It should be a pure salary dump and they give us a late pick.St Dave wrote: ↑Tue 15 Oct 2024 11:26am32 to Brisbane for Macrae (always thought 27 was too much and dogs wouldn't accept 40+) and our 40+ picks for academy and father son if we want them.TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Tue 15 Oct 2024 11:21am Here we go
