Cutting too deep
I see Grant Thomas has been having a swipe at the club again, this time around list management. Very critical of the re-signing of Zac Jones. He wants all those older B Grade player to be be chopped.
The problem with that is, if you do that, who do you delist next year? You can't have a situation where the club cannot turn over the list next year because there is is a huge swath of young talent that hasn't yet been properly developed or assessed.
It's a balancing act around development and leaving enough spots on your list to trade players in, while maintaining at least your first two picks in the draft.

The Neil Harvey of StKilda FC.
Irrelevant!
Yeah we’d probably love to cut 12 players and replace them young talent, but how does that happen? Where do you get the picks & players?
There's only one rule in the jungle! When the LYON's hungry, he eats!

Re: Cutting too deep
The number of changes needs to be balanced. Too many and the club needs to rebuild its soul.
There is only so many players that you can pick up theough draft and trade. Zack Jones is better than say pick 80 in the draft .... we have invested a massive amount in him. Would be good to get an additional year for what I presume is a pretty low base wage.

Re: Cutting too deep
Look if he maintains his form from last 6 rounds then by all means let him go around again. Very handy.
But if he reverts to bad habits, ie holding on to the pull too long, making poor decisions with ball in hand, then it becomes irrelevant. As long as he’s on low.waged then the damage control is minimal

It would be a pleasant change if GT could chuck the occasional small bouquet instead of his stream of rocks.cwrcyn wrote: ↑Sun 13 Oct 2024 4:18pm I see Grant Thomas has been having a swipe at the club again, this time around list management. ZJ's last few games were very good, why delist just when he's found his mojo.

Re: Cutting too deep
GT probably stating the bleedin' obvious- Lyon is not a development coach and wasn't brought back to do so. Jones probably deserves another season after good late season form this year, so good on him, but he we need to hope he can play a full season in 2025 without major injuries...same for any player come to think of it.
Re: Cutting too deep
The throw away line “Lyon is not a development Coach”
I was and remain critical of the “papering” under our key players when Lyon was last the Coach, so the likes of Birss, Peake et al BUT there was also successes starting with Michael Gardiner
Should we have injected youth noting our Draft Picks thru that period?
Then with Fremantle, they were contending also reaching a Grand Final
Now?
We see the reliance on Clark, on King then on Phillipou, Wanganeen-Milera, Wilson and no doubt more kids in 2025 given 2 Top 10 Draft Picks plus the kids we have given some exposure to
To them we add Owens and Windhager - then Caminiti et al, so all kids
Then Collard’s Contract
So where does the throw away line “not a development Coach” come from, and why noting we have a Coaching panel
Society these days is fed throw away lines and solutions absent analysis and we, as a society are the poorer for it (as will be our workforce given they have access to withdraw superannuation contributions to assist in a house purchase, noting houses you live in do not generate income before you get to compounding)

You are saying Ross was brought back to maintain the status quo. Sounds odd . I assumed the President wanted team development in a northerly direction.spert wrote: ↑Mon 14 Oct 2024 1:15pm GT probably stating the bleedin' obvious- Lyon is not a development coach and wasn't brought back to do so. Re: Cutting too deep
If you're going to employ someone like Ross Lyon, would you be hiring him for his reputation as a development coach? Is that why people view him to be a good coach? Has he had success getting a team of youth to climb the ladder before has he?
I'm not saying you're wrong Killa or that spert is wrong in his comments... there have been some good signs from our whole coaching group, especially from Lyon that our club is focussed on developing the youth.
Having said that...you don't need to be a Rhodes Scholar to work out that SOS and Gubby and Ross Lyon were/are trying to speed up our 'development' with the targetting of Weitering and then Merrett and now the interest in Mcrae and Soldo et en...

Re: Cutting too deep
The employees of the St Kilda FC are charged with developing and improving the performance and record in the AFL competition
That Mission Statement is not one dimensional in regard process
Would you not expect the Club to pursue the best available players to assist in the delivery of the Mission Statement?
By making it publicly known that we are in the market for class players, particularly ruck support for Marshall, key defensive support for Howard and key attacking support for King, plus adding a quality mid with his career ahead of him to add to the young troops we are assembling including in November, you never know who will fall from the tree
In regards the players mentioned being McRae and Soldo, my view is that they add experience to an otherwise building young side and over the next season or so noting the troops we are adding will surpass them the only question being the time line
There are some on here who obviously have no brief with Lyon - dating from him taking the money and running to Fremantle (noting the circumstances of that time including personally for Lyon)
Hence the continuing and boring contributions
The employees of St Kilda FC are charged with making the Club relevant - by becoming a power Club in the competition
So 2 years in, cut them some slack because we are actually well positioned in regards our experienced core and our youth
There is the demographic structure of the List and why we anxiously look to Schoenmaker, Keeler and Heath, then our other kids who have had a taste

Re: Cutting too deep
You have to have experience around your young players. Membrey and Jones were both very good in the back half of the season IMHFO.
I am glad we kept Jones, and wish we were keeping Tim Membrey. Jet!
In the 70s players like Phil Stevens worked with players coming through in the magoos to help them out.

Re: Cutting too deep
Just Bassat throwing cash around thinking it will like the old days- a rich man's nostalgia trip. Pulling an ex-coach out of retirement and pulling in some old favourites as assistant coaches is not the way to go forward- the club just should have honoured Ratten's extended contract, then brought in a quality assistant looking for a senior gig. But what's done is done.Yorkeys wrote: ↑Mon 14 Oct 2024 8:59pmYou are saying Ross was brought back to maintain the status quo. Sounds odd .
