Re: BJ to coach VFL side
He looks to have real potential as a coach.
I think the work he did with Phillipou this year was obvious to see. And, by the end of the season, the midfield was functioning much better as a whole, with Jones also lifting his game significantly. (And Steele coming back into form, although I suspect improved fitness was also a big factor there.)
And BJ always sounded sensible and quite analytical back when he was commentating on ABC radio.
And, let's face it, back when he was a player, he always looked desperately keen to coach the team.

“ In conjunction with Goddard's appointment, St Kilda has made other notable changes to its coaching structure. Former Melbourne and Geelong defender Jared Rivers is set to join the St Kilda coaching staff as an assistant, contributing his expertise to the team's development efforts.”
Zero Hanger.

Hopefully, Goddard will get Sandy playing watchable football. The last few years has been excruciating and unwatchable

Re: BJ to coach VFL side
So what does our new coaching structure look like???
Obvious Lyon managers the entire team, with Enright instructing the backs, Harvey instructing the mids (we also have a ruck coach but I forget his name). But who in charge of the Forwards?? hopefully we get someone the understands forward craft & leading patterns.

Re: BJ to coach VFL side
Harvey has coached the forwards for the last two years. I wouldn't be surprised if he went to the backs and Enright was given a year with the forwards. Perhaps Lenny could come back to do the mids again.footynut wrote: ↑Fri 11 Oct 2024 7:53pm So what does our new coaching structure look like???

Re: BJ to coach VFL side
I don't think giving the job to BJ will improve anything.
The issues with the alignment seems more structural than personnel.
Think of the AFL as the retail industry, and the VFL as the smaller supermarkets.
Just putting in a new store manager won't solve issues.
If the store isn't designed right, and customers don't like going, then renovate the store, improve the car park, enlarge the meat and deli section etc.
They need to look at the structure.
Does Sandy train at RSEA Park?
Is the TBBO a cold, desolate windswept misery like the islands of St Kilda off the coast of Scotland?
Fix all those things.
Coaching a VFL side looks like a demotion for BJ

It's part of his 'apprenticeship'. Coaching a team is a much different set of skills to being a line coach.

Re: BJ to coach VFL side
It’s great that BJ and Dal have key roles at the club. One of the worst things we ever did was trade those two out when they still had much to give as players.
