Saints trade talk thread
Hi everyone… thought it would be worth having a dedicated to thread for this. Am by no means discouraging the other various discussions going on but for those of us not really following, I think it’s nice for a one stop shop where all the discussions/rumours/trade/news etc are posted.
I don’t know much but will start us off with what I do know.
Jack McCrae has nominated us but by all accounts we’re nowhere near a trade. It’s alleged he’s on a huge salary that we would pick up with WB wanting a 40s pick but us wanting one back.
It’s been suggested that if we don’t get McCrae, Kennedy is the one we could go after instead but there’s no evidence to suggest that’s a club thought.
We’re also linked to Soldo but there doesn’t seem to be much movement there.
Saints are possibly in the conversation with Goldcoast in trying to do a deal for their first round pick… or trade our compensation pick in general for multiple picks in the top 25. Doesn’t seem like we’re really in contention.
Houston doesn’t seem to be a realistic prospect for us but his trade to Carlton may be one that is holding up a lot of movement.
LDU whispered to want out and we’ve been attached to him in rumours (as far as wanting) for a few years but no news there.
For our guys…
Crouch set to retire
Hayes reportedly told to look around and has tested with Collingwood.
Membrey also looking around
Campbell has signed with Melbourne
That’s all I know of.

Re: Saints trade talk thread
Essendon want Kako who is an academy player, if he gets bid on before #9, they have to use #9 to match the bid and secure him, if not (I believe, someone please correct me) they select a player at #9 and then get him with #31 their next selection, matching a club bid. (Is this correct?)
If Kako hasn't been nominated by our picks (currently) at #8 & #9, we should contact Essendon on the night and swap our #7 for their #9 and their 2025 first round pick.
Probably get vetoed by the AFL as draft tampering, but it would be nice to move back one place and get their next years first.
It would be a win / win.

Re: Saints trade talk thread
You want to be in the first 8 picks in the draft
Anyone from 1->8 could make an argument to go pick 1

Yeah, you use the points value of your picks to match, so pick 9 + whatever remaining picks to make up the points.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Wed 09 Oct 2024 12:23pm Essendon want Kako who is an academy player, if he gets bid on before #9, they have to use #9 to match the bid and secure him, if not (I believe, someone please correct me) they select a player at #9 and then get him with #31 their next selection, matching a club bid. That might be a smart move, but I wonder if they would have enough points from 31 on to then match the bid. If they don't have the points they take the point hit on their first pick the next year, I don't know how that works if they don't own the pick anymore (surely it wouldn't reduce the pick they traded to us in your scenario, but I don't know for sure).
The more I think about it, you are effectively getting essendon an extra top 10 pick this year in return for their first next year. Seems like it could be blocked by the AFL given we aren't really giving up anything, but I like it.

Re: Saints trade talk thread
The main priority I see for this draft period are as follows:
1. Keep Picks 7 and 8 at all costs as what B.M has said is correct “the first 8 players could all make a case to be number 1”.
2. Somehow turn picks 27 and 47 and Membrey compensation into more picks to get Adrian Cole and Pecket for bidding.
3. Keep our full set of draft picks for 2025 or improve our hand.
4. Get Ivan Soldo if Jack Hayes is gone but don’t pay overs. I actually don’t want him because Max Heath will be ready for next season and Keeler needs to be played as a ruck fwd. I will happily walk away from the deal.
5. “IF” Macrae is a salary dump and Doggies are giving him away for free or giving us a draft pick (Jack Bowes style) and “IF” Crouch is actually toast and is retiring than I would entertain that trade. But two big “IFs” will have to go through.

Macrae is not a salary dump. They are happy to keep him, he is the one who wants a trade.

Re: Saints trade talk thread
It seems mean spirited to hold a player to a one year contract with no real intention to renew and by doing so cruel the player's chances for a multi year deal.

We will not revive anything if Membrey leaves. We picked him up as a Delisted Free Agent (DFA) at no cost. Once you are delisted, you are a DFA for life.TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Wed 09 Oct 2024 1:06pm 2. So once he becomes uncontracted, he can move to whatever team you like at no trade or compo cost as a DFA.
I think Tom Campbell was the same. Picked him up as a DFA, let him go, goes to Melb for nothing.

Re: Saints trade talk thread
I don't know what's going on with Soldo but i heard a report that said Soldo wants to come back to Victoria BUT he hasn't nominated a club.
If that's true, who linked him to the Saints ?
If that's true, who linked him to the Saints ?
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Saints trade talk thread
Soldo.
No to Soldo!
The only reason to get him is back up for Marshall... if people think that we're a serious flag chance in 2025. (We aren't.)
If, heaven forbid, Marshall goes down, then we blood our various other options. And if they aren't yet ready for the task, well, that doesn't matter... again, unless someone thinks we're a red hot flag chance in 2025. (We aren't.)
Besides, as most people correctly point out, the mid field is our number one area of issue. So why would we play a dinosour like Soldo, and therefore effectively be playing with one less running mid fielder???
Campbell held back the development of Carl and Keeler, IMHO. Soldo would just do the same. Carl and Keeler need to be playing as Sandy's first choice rucks/key forwards to speed up their development to play seniors.
(Besides, worst case scenario, there's always the mid season draft.)
McCrae.
No.
A bit like as with Campbell/Soldo, he'd actually be holding back the development of the likes of Windy, Garcia and the (at least) two young gun mids we draft this year.
And why help out the Poodles with a salary dump? Shirley a (much) smarter option would be to distribute that money into the front loading of contracts for the young guns we want to retain, and hence, then creating future cap space for free agent acquisition in 2025...?
Kennedy.
IMHO, this bloke is underrated.
A big bodied mid (big bodied mids are the future - don't recruit any small mid Saintas!), who is a decent kick, can kick a goal, and can take a mark above his head. He's younger than McCrae, and he'd be dirt cheap.
So whilst not a priority target IMHO, I'd be happy to get him.
Jai Culley.
He's another of Martin's men. So that's good enough for me.
Bailey Sniff.
This is tougher one. (And probably a hyperthetical one too. But lets run with it anyway. )
If the cards fall and he's available for out pick 7 or 8 (or whatever number those picks 'drift' to), then talent-wise you'd have to jump at it. Age-wise too. As for $$$, well he'd probably cost less than what we seem to be budgeting for McCrae. So, we'd get a (now) better player with more life left him, and for slightly less money.
But the issue... his attitude.
To that I'd say, if Hillbilly town reckons that they can sort out his 'attitude', then, isn't it about time our Saintas start to back themselves in to do the same???

I agree with everything you have said Dave McNamara (or should I say Aeonflux)?
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Don’t forget we might need to medically retire Crouch so we will still need a senior inside mid.

Re: Saints trade talk thread
None of the players discussed above have upward trending recent form.
A couple seem highly risky propositions from discipline and ability perspectives.
Sad list really, nothing exciting.
I can see why there is no apparent traction with any.
(Cats are showing desperation going hard for B. Smith and even entertaining Oliver, if Holmes hammys are shot or teams start tagging him and Cameron loses form - how old is he? - they are well on the down, even if Dangerfield can be patched up to manage 11 games.)

The trade period as a whole has been a joke
Clubs wanting premiums for players - who they didn’t rate at the selection table but all of a sudden rate at the trade table?!
30yos suddenly worth a premium

What if we offered Next year first rounder for GC pick 13
Or Fremantle pick 18 points 985 still first round for our Pick 27 & 47 worth 1019 we would then have picks 7,8,13,18 not bad all first rounders with that draft hand we could reshape our team.
