Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
I don't have a problem with the idea of Bailey Smith, but very much doubt that he would want to play for St Kilda.
The lure of hitting the big time at Kardinia Park and playing in finals regularly is irresistable.
Let's face it, if you were Bailey Smith, which of the two clubs would you want to play for??
Come on, be honest now....

Also, Ross would demand he work on his defensive game and that’s not really his go. He wouldn’t like it. He’s an attacking weapon.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2024 10:10am I don't have a problem with the idea of Bailey Smith, but very much doubt that he would want to play for St Kilda.

I actually wonder sometimes if journos get asked to write this stuff by manager is return for leaks at other times during the year.

Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
I would with our second pick, isn’t smith only on a 1 year contract though? So effectively you would be picking him for one year than getting an end of first round compo next year when he inevitably leaves.

Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
You're right. Smith is out of contract.
If Geelong do not get a deal done (and Dogs let him walk) we could potentially pick him up in the Pre-season draft. I can't see that happening
It's a similar situation to Luke Ball going to Collingwood and St Kilda getting nought in return.

Bevo must be rueing his stubborn insistence that Bailey Smith is not a midfielder. Of course he wants out. Meanwhile, Chris Scott and the Cats will be rubbing their hands together with glee.Scollop wrote: ↑Wed 09 Oct 2024 9:33pm
Jack Mcrae won the Gary Ayers medal in 2021 as the best player in the finals with 29 coaches votes
Guess which 20 year old at the time came second with 27 votes?
Mcrae definitely had more possessions and clearances in those 2021 finals matches, but Smith was the one that had the inspirational moments.
He turned the game for the Bulldogs against Brisbane up at the Gabba in the semi final with 3 awesome goals..oh and Smith also had better disposal efficiency than Mcrae that night too

No way #8 for Smith.
I think the Geelong offer is on the money.
I think the band 1 compo shows we got a great outcome for Battle.
Battle is a very good AFL player, but to suggest he’s in the top 5% is laughable.

Cats are going to have to offer more than 17, because Bulldogs won't accept it. They will allow him to go to the draft if it comes to it. But I expect Cats will find a wayD.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2024 2:12pm No way #8 for Smith.

There is no way (IMO) anyone will spend a top 10 pick, so it would be interesting if he went into the draft.bigcarl wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2024 2:16pmCats are going to have to offer more than 17, because Bulldogs won't accept it. I wonder if West Coast would take him with Hawthorns first pick (traded for Barrass)?

Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
The only thing stopping them would be the unwritten rule that you don’t stop a player getting where he wants to go. Would be tempting for them to break that convention if it comes to him going to the draftD.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2024 2:38pmThere is no way (IMO) anyone will spend a top 10 pick, so it would be interesting if he went into the draft.bigcarl wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2024 2:16pmCats are going to have to offer more than 17, because Bulldogs won't accept it. I am hoping the club will be paying most of their attention to the best youngsters coming through in the draft while we can.

Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
Wouldn't one think that as it's been common knowledge for months that B Smith is going to Geelong the 2 clubs would have settled on terms weeks ago. This current coyness seems so contrived?

Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
Typical arrogance from Geelong. Just because a player is out of contract doesn't mean you'll get him on your terms
The mofos assumed that the Bulldogs wouldn't put up a fight. Also...Bailey has upset some people at the Dogs ...before a trade deal has been agreed

Re: Pick 8 for Bailey Smith? Would you do it?
Jon Ralph. Herald Sun
Premiership Magpie Luke Ball has urged Geelong to trade for Bailey Smith instead of dragging him through the national draft, admitting he briefly pondered retiring as he waited in limbo in 2009.
Smith might have to run the gauntlet of the national draft as the Bulldogs and Geelong haggle on his worth.
St Kilda would not trade Ball to Collingwood for pick 25 in 2009 and stood its ground, with his manager Paul Connors eventually orchestrating the move that saw him go into the draft where every club overlooked him until the Pies swooped at selection 30.
Collingwood believed it had a fair offer for 25-year-old Ball, and while he got to the Pies and became a 2010 premiership hero he admits it was an anxiety-ridden two-month wait.
The Cats are standing firm on the offer of pick 17 for departing Dog Smith, adamant no club would pick the No. 7 draft pick if he was put into the national draft.

The Western Bulldogs want a pick inside the top 10 of November’s super draft from Geelong in exchange for Bailey Smith.
As Wednesday night’s AFL trade deadline draws closer, the Dogs are yet to budge on their demands which is out of reach for the Cats who have offered their first pick (currently No.17) for the out-of-contract midfield star.
The Cats are adamant their offer is reasonable for Smith, 23, who hasn’t played for 12 months because of a knee reconstruction and has made it clear he wants out from Whitten Oval.
Should the Dogs continue to hold firm, Smith’s management is confident he can get to the Cats through the national draft. That would leave the Bulldogs with nothing.
The only trade of a pick inside the top 10 for a player is likely to be Gold Coast handing over No.6 for Richmond’s best-and-fairest winner Daniel Rioli.
Collingwood premiership player Luke Ball famously went through the draft 15 years ago to get to the Magpies after St Kilda refused to do a deal.
