Some stupid idiot just signed Max King to a new deal that extends him to the end of 2032.
Can't get rid of him now without looking dumber than dumb.

Joe is 30. He could go again but many big men are done around 30.
Max. Long history of injuries. Signed until he is 32 ....
I hope there is some clauses in that contract.

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
Can all you sooks decide who you want Max King to be and compare how they were going at the same age?
Because at 22 or 23 (noting this year was obviously impacted by injury) he is averaging more goals a game than Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow and Tom Hawkins were at the same age and he is on par with Nick Riewoldt (100 goals in 41 games for 2.44 avg vs Max 80 goals in 33 games 2.42 avg). He is about half a goal a game behind Jeremy Cameron at the same age. But they are just a handful of the last few Coleman medalists (plus Nick), so tell us all who you would prefer him to be.
The kid is a saints fan, is the best goal kicker we have had in over a decade (as a 22 year old) in front of our midfield with Membrey as our number 2, has one down year and has a vocal portion of the fan base out wishing he was traded. And you all wonder why he might have confidence issues and need to clear his head.

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
It's great to hear how excited Max sounds when he talks about slotting back into the line up. He was frustrated that he couldn't play, but happy to see the team playing an exciting brand of footy.
At the B&F our captain mentioned that the team needs to take that momentum from the last few rounds into next year.
Those last 8 games would have significantly changed some people's minds on Sharman and Byrnes and Clark. I also think Membrey and Jones showed they can be valuable contributors.
Considering how well the team played in our last 8 games...and considering the possible inclusions of Jack McRae and Ivan Soldo... it'll be interesting to ponder the changes on field for 2025.

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
Apologies in advance for a long post. Probably should start a new thread
A fully fit Liam Henry and Max King must be first 22, so how do we also fit Mcrae and Soldo into the team? Especially when we need a replacement for Battle
Can Shoenmaker or Caminiti do the job as well as Battle or do we have to bring in Laverde or Tomlinson or someone else?
King replaces Membrey (if Membrey leaves) and Mcrae possibly takes Dow's spot or Jones spot but who does Soldo replace? If Marshall becomes a forward does that mean Owens or Butler become the sub or do they play VFL?
Byrnes seems to be the one that might have to make way for Henry but I personally think that's a mistake. I reckon both Byrnes and Henry offer the team more than Hill (based on Hilly's output in the last 8 games). Byrnes and Henry win contested footy and can win clearances.
Might be difficult to fit Wood, Byrnes, Hill and Henry in the same team. It's similar when you look at inside mids. We can't have Clark, Steele, Mcrae Windhager and Dow in the same team.
Personally...I wouldn't bring in Mcrae, because I think Windhager and Henry need to slot into this team. I think we improve with both of these guys fully fit.
I expect that Clark, Dow and Byrnes are improving in their fitness and their inside game...and also don't forget Hugo Garcia is capable.
Personally...I wouldn't bring in Soldo because I think we should be using Max King similarly to how Brisbane used Joe Daniher. Caminiti is tall enough and he'd be perfect for second ruck but it's going to be impossible to play Caminiti, Marshall, King, Owens and Sharman in the forward line (if Soldo is the number 1 ruck).
Possibly Caminiti plays more VFL if we recruit Soldo and Hammer is back up for one of the talls. Assuming we lose Membrey, I personally would love King, Caminiti and Sharman to work together long term and be our permanent KP Forwards. Don't see how that works with Marshall down there in 2025
If match committee want to turn Caminiti into a permanent defender to fit in where Battle played (and we don't recruit a replacement like Laverde or Tomlinson) then King, Owens, Sharman become the talls and Henry, Butler and Higgins make up the remainder of our starting forward line.

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
Crazy or genius?
Supposing you bet Max will have heavy interest should he have an injury free run.
So, clubs have to pay up for such a highly valued player vs. a Battle etc situation

With the two top ten draft pick midfielders we pick up this year, Max will have better kicks supplying him than he has done over the past four seasons.

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
Wow didn’t see some of that vitriol coming
I started this topic as a bit of a joke and discussion point. I don’t set out to bag Saints players but we should be able to have conversations about them.
So 2 points to discuss
1 We have listened to many over the last couple of weeks talk about St.K trading and recruiting. With many asking why we are never a heavy hitter. So then let’s talk about Max. Why shouldn’t we go to Bris and say you need a full forward what are you prepared to give us.
Shake things up, or do we just want to be the club that clamours for Soldo, McRae etc. Why can’t we be in the game that seems to circle above us.
2. Genuine question for the Max supporters “how long are you going to give him?”
Right now he has played in 83 games since 2020 for an average of just under 2 goals per game. When he plays we win 47% of the time (39-44)
But here’s a fun fact when he doesn’t play we are 17 wins 10 losses (63% win ratio). I find that stat incredible.
I hope like hell he does make it, but surely everything is up for discussion, it is not just bagging players, it’s about improving our team

In the past I've been in and out of the "trade Max King" factions, but given that the club has locked him in to stay at Moorabbin until 2032 (a hell of a long time btw, the year Brisbane hosts the Olympics and I'll still be going strong at 92 not out!), I've come to the conclusion that it's a waste of time to argue the point right now.
Nonetheless, quite obviously if Max King fails to reach the potential to become the elite key forward that was predicted when he (and twin brother Ben) was drafted, then the question of moving to another club may well arise again.
2025 will therefore prove to be a very pivotal year for both Kings, in many ways 'make or break', and for our sakes I really hope Max has a stellar year!

Sorry if my reply came off vitriolic, it just seems a significant person of the last dozen threads that are talking negatively about a player are all about Max. And they get the same replies potting him but no one actually engages with positive points.terry smith rules wrote: ↑Sat 05 Oct 2024 10:16am Wow didn’t see some of that vitriol coming

For point 1, I don't mind discussing trading anyone, but if we are losing Max how are you replacing 50+ goals a year? I would be asking for a lot more than Brisbanes 3rd or 4th best mid for a kid who is one of our better players and is a saints fan (so actually might want to play for us). Personally if you want to get interesting with trading out players, I would be looking at Windy and Owens, both have potential and would be worth something but neither are key cogs in our structure (and all we want to do is draft mids anyway so some will be squeezed out eventually).
For point 2, I have addressed this in every thread, but no one wants to discuss it. That was why I was asking people to decide who you want to benchmark Max against and we can have a discussion. You say Max average just under 2 goals a game in his first 83 games, well I counter that with Charlie Curnow in his first 6 seasons played 84 games and averaged 1.7 goals per game over that time. So is Max on par with the development of a recent Coleman winner or is he just ahead?

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
There are 17 other sides in the AFL that would just love to have Max fronting their forward line.
And those 17 clubs would piss themselves laughing if we tried to offload him.

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
Here’s a couple of Key Forwards
Pretty average before 25yo - constantly injured or underperforming
Charlie Curnow
Jesse Hogan
Joe Daniher
You don’t give up 202cm key forwards because the have been injured
Full pre season and full season
Max will kick 60-75 goals

Re: Joe D retires… Max King for…
The important thing is not the number of goals Max King will possibly end up kicking at his peak, but our team kicking more goals.
I mean King may have a year where he'll kick his 70-80 goals, but this might come at the cost of our forward line being less efficient and the team kicking 50 less goals per year overall?
King's best position, as far as helping the side, might actually be CHB, who knows?
The team is greater than the individual, as the saying goes ... or is it just a saying?
(We should be monitoring our forward line efficiency - goals scored per entry - at all times, and looking for the best combination ... and if King improves it further, then that'd be great, of course).
