Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
Battles contract is with the AFL. His loyalties are to his family. He supports and plays for Hawthorn now, just like his dad. f*** Battle. Shoenmaker will be better.
Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
In the Corporate World, if you tender your notice to join a Company in the same line of business you are immediately invited to pack your personal belongings and to leave - so no need to work out your 4 weeks notice
You are taking your knowledge of one business to another plus you have contacts you can approach when with a new employer asking them also to transfer given there is no clause in your employment Contract prohibiting you from doing so
More to the point for me is Battle expecting to attend the function given his resignation and accepting employment from a direct competitor
Which may say something about Battle
You do not expect to waltz thru the door and say “I haven’t left yet. I am here to enjoy one last time”
On a personal level he may well have friends who remain employed by St Kilda - but in terms of his employer he has resigned and no longer has any association at any level
And this was a function arranged by the business he has resigned from to join a competitor
It was his decision and this is the consequence
For every action there is a reaction
And given friendships with players from rival Clubs, would any St Kilda employee invite an employee of another Club to a function of St Kilda?
And would they accept such an invitation?
Simply, they would not
We look for Battle’s actions to solidify St Kilda
It is not as if he has been traded or delisted when he would otherwise have wished to remain - so leaving given St Kilda looks to improve its List and collateral damage
Next he will expect to be in the St Kilda rooms singing the St Kilda song after St Kilda defeat Hawthorn - wearing his Hawthorn jumper

How does going from Moorabbin to Mulgrave benefit his family?
It may benefit him HTF does it benefit his family

He jumped ship because he rates Hawthorn FC more than StK

Seems very petty by us. We should still be respectful and would have the higher respect. This just brings us down to the same level.
There simply must be something else we simply don't know about.

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
Not usually. Ollie Henry wasn't invited to Collingwood's B&F after requesting a trade.
I don't understand why this is a story, rarely are players who request a change of club invited to club functions following. And if invited, most would decline anyway.
It's like asking for a divorce then complaining that you weren't invited to dinner with your ex.
Completely bizarre that people are knocking the club for this.

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
To be fair, you don't know how the deals are structured. If the Hawks are front loading say $1.5m in the first year and $1.25m in the second, and we are offering a flat $900k per year then yeah that $950k additional over the first two years is pretty helpful to his family.

He went for less money
From what I’m hearing it was 850k over 6
50k off band 1 Compo

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
Battle has been on a high income over his years on St Kilda's List (as are all AFL footballers)
The question being how has he deployed that net of tax remuneration?
Noting the Coach, a failed investment (so no diversification) which took his wealth and then looking to re-establish hence accepting an offer of alternate employment paying big up-front dollars.
Just saying.
Never assume that people are well off financially until you grab them, turn them upside down, take them by the ankles and shake to see what falls out in terms of NET wealth.
And you never get rich quick.

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
Whatever his contract states at Hawthorn, you can bet there's a whole lot more money coming his way. Did his wife get a high paid part time job as part of the package? Will they be moving into a luxurious home without having to put their hands in their pockets?

Where is the proof he went for less money?
Are you referring to the Tom Morris tweet?

Gresham went to the B&F in 2023.Beno88 wrote: ↑Wed 02 Oct 2024 8:51amNot usually. Ollie Henry wasn't invited to Collingwood's B&F after requesting a trade.

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
Well, first off I'm not sure you are correct in saying the club asked him not to attend.
According to Cam Wilkie, who is a good friend of Battle's, the decision was made by the player himself.
And perfectly understandable why he would not want to attend.
You're beginning to sound like Cornes, who never has anything good to say about our footy club.

The decision was Battle's. Not the club.CURLY wrote: ↑Wed 02 Oct 2024 11:12amWhat are you talking about? If it came from the club a agree he shouldn't have come.damienc wrote: ↑Wed 02 Oct 2024 11:03amWell, first off I'm not sure you are correct in saying the club asked him not to attend.

Gresham advised St Kilda he was going to Essendon on October 7th.

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
Is that true?
In my view, a player who leaves for more money, or a longer term contract which guarantees a certain level of pay, is acting according to the "rules" of free agency. A player who rejects more money in order to stay at a club that has supported him in the bad times is acting loyally.
A player who moves to another club for less money because his thinks his club is no good, is doing neither. On that basis, attending an awards night would have been quite insulting to all those who he has said are no good.
So, in the well established tradition of the stage, I wish him well and hope he breaks a leg.

Re: Battle told not to attend B and F
It is an economics concept called the Time Value of Money.
I am probably not remembering my economics perfectly but basically it is the idea that money in the hands now is worth some level more than money later. It is the idea behind discounts for early payment and things like that.
Without getting too bogged down in the math, if Battle gets $600k more in the first year than we were offering and he can invest it at a 10% return per year (so basically buy a house), after 5 years he has earned $300k which is about what we think he sacrificed by taking the Hawks avg $850k over 6 vs our $900k over 6. And that asset keeps providing a return after that, and if his Hawks deal steps down as you might expect to get to that $850k avg, there would be further money to provide a return in years 2 and 3 of the deal.

I keep seeing people post this, but I am yet to see one shred of evidence of authenticity.
Surely its not based on a Tom Morris comment?

Using an ice cream analogy:
You eat the ice cream before it melts.
The ice cream is the money and melting represents inflation reducing the purchasing power of your money.

Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.

So his family wouldn’t have been supported if he stayed at StK on $950 a year over 6 years?
