Andrew Basset tees off
Had a fair crack at the AFL and the fairness of the draft.
Good on him. Everyone with half a clue knows the system at the moment is a pisstake.

Had to be said it's a pisstake at the moment and clubs in our position can only tread water.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
Basset was just grandstanding for the members benefit.
Basset is a well credentialed businessman, he knows you give a rocket behind closed doors for maximum effect and impact, not in the public eye, that’s more like GT amateur hour MO.
What is to gain by dishing publicly?
Only fools would think this strategically effective
My guess (just a guess) is we already know what the compo pick is (end of first round) and are throwing everything at getting it up reviewed.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
I liked it. Also elicited some of the most braindead takes I have ever seen by fans from other clubs.
The point system was flawed and has now been overhauled to the benefit of everyone in Victoria. The northern clubs won’t be given as many free handouts and the draft will be slightly less compromised.
Bassett has been great for the club.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
Well done Prez.
Had to be said (again), & the AFL had to be told (again)
If we get burnt, too bad
Do nothing & nothing changes (just like the JO)
F/S
Not a problem but pay fair value
Cough up a 1st round pick ... no less than 5(?) picks from the player rating
If you havent got one, go get one
If you can't get one ... Fxxx off
Academies
Should be run by the AFL, not the clubs
EVERYONE should have access to ALL players from ALL academies

That was why I didn't like it. The AFL have made adjustments, we haven't yet seen how they play out, and he is still sooking.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Tue 01 Oct 2024 1:23pm I liked it. Also elicited some of the most braindead takes I have ever seen by fans from other clubs.

The changes will make it fairer, the question is how much, so maybe wait until we know before publicly keeping up the poor us mentality.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
Media has been mostly supportive of this, this morning?
The only people having a go is the low socio economic lowest common demominator fans who probably don’t even understand how the point system works nor know what an academy is.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
I like it. The AFL has said the system is changing anyway. It is the academy issue as much as anything, the way the northern states get the advantage- not level playing field in regard to the draft and matching . To me FS is a lucky dip , although the point accumulation model is an anomaly which needs to be fixed.
Difference between this and GT is :
a) The CEO of the AFL isnt now an ex teammate- like GT and AD, and GT had called him out in front of others at North
b) Basset hasn't told the umpires to check their ego

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
I didn’t see it as a sook, Basset merely pointed out what the club has done for the wider AFL and pointed out the hilarity in that the lions will secure the best player in the draft and arguably one of the best prospects from the past decade for 2 second rounders and 2 third round picks.St Dave wrote: ↑Tue 01 Oct 2024 1:30pmThat was why I didn't like it. Hyperbole!
Man the panic stations!
Advocating or whining?
We are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
I reckon a few on here like to pick and choose what favourite pet equality social justice issue they want to whine about.
That’s why I love social media; it exposes the brain dead.
Hilarious.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
That is a quirk of the system which I would agree needs to be tightened up, I just think we need to understand the impact of the changes that have already happened before raising it again, that's where it feels sooky.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Tue 01 Oct 2024 1:38pmI didn’t see it as a sook, Basset merely pointed out what the club has done for the wider AFL and pointed out the hilarity in that the lions will secure the best player in the draft and arguably one of the best prospects from the past decade for 2 second rounders and 2 third round picks.St Dave wrote: ↑Tue 01 Oct 2024 1:30pmThat was why I didn't like it. It feels like my kid seeing someone else with ice cream and complaining "not fair, why don't I have ice cream too", so I tell them they can have some ice cream when we get home, but then all the way home they are still complaining about ice cream and how theirs won't taste as good. Maybe just wait until we get a taste before continuing to bring it up.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
I think Basset would suggest we don’t get an ice cream in your irrelevant example.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
100% spot on .the acadamies in the.northern states are a massive advantage in the sense that none of the victorian clubs have access to any of the young talent coning out of there and that those clubs (brisbane, gold coast, gws) have to give up sfa come draft time to get them . If you think thats a fair system then you got rocks in your heads. It needs to be called out and put the issue front and centre in the spotlight till the afl change it because its killing the competition .good on our prez for speaking up and other club presidents need to speek up as well to bring about change .Saint 58 wrote: ↑Tue 01 Oct 2024 1:29pm Well done Prez.

Re: Andrew Basset tees off
Lol woosh. That's why I said 'feels like' because it is the vibe not a 1 to 1 example. I understand if you have issues with analogies though so I can spell it out for you.
The point was the rules have changed, but we are still complaining. If we wait a little bit it might not be so unfair anymore, but we can't just be patient so we are still having a sook like a child.
