He’s only 30

Seriously, with today’s conditioning players

If they are good enough and injury free

Can play to 35

I reckon if his mind is willing Brad Hill could play to 36/37

You see it all sports

Cricketers now go until late 30s and are fit as fk where’s once they were done by 30-32

Tennis players play well into their 30s now when once they were done at 27-28

There is so much earning capacity playing, why would you retire before you were physically unable - with money being the motivation

Dustin Martin is coming back from retirement to play for a meager wage of 400k

Where else would he get that?!

This does not require fast leg speed, just fast reflexes, and at 192 cm and 89 kg he has the body size to hold his ground against his opponents.
That's exactly what I 'm afraid of.

You can't have one dimensional players in your team anymore in the modern game. The stand rule and the structure and ball movement and the importance of possession, means you need mids who can apply pressure and cover the ground quickly to prevent uncontested marks.

That's exactly why Bevo had him as 6th or 7th preferred midfielder.

Yes, it's probably been done to death, however if you don't mind I would like to elaborate on a point I made yesterday.

I have previuously mentioned that Beveridge preferred 32 y.o. Tom Liberatore over 30 y.o. Jack Macrae at the centre bounces and stoppages.

But if you look at the way Footscray has set up their midfield his year, Marcus Bontempelli (194 cm) is their tall mid and Liberatore (184 cm) the outside runner.

This possibly explains why 192 cm Macrae came to be out of favour...

I know it's a moot point but I don't believe Macrae at 30 is over the hill - there are plenty of other 30+ aged mids still playing very good football in the AFL, and as I said before, if he allows St Kilda to get first hands on the ball at stoppages he will be a valuable asset.

That ends the case in favour of Macrae :D

Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

It's not their height.

It's their facial hair. Bont has a beard and Libba has a moustache

You know Bevo has a thing for that. Everyone knows it. Who could forget Bevo's handlebar moustache from a couple of years ago?

Ed Richards has a beautiful mop of red.

I'm surprised you didn't pick it. couldn't resist responding. Definitely last post in this thread...I promise 🫢

I heard today we have offered #43 for McCrae and #44, with us taking his full salary.

WB want #43 stand alone.

If (if) this is factual, it represents the true nature of the deal, a win / win.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense for #43 alone. Surely this would mean that they absorb at least half his salary otherwise it’s a hard pass for me (though it’s a pass for #43 from me anyway).

I’d do 43 for Macrae

But we’ll drive a hard bargain to arrive there

Asking respectfully but haven’t you repeatedly expressed concern about trading out any picks this draft?

This seems off brand for you

If WB do not see McCrae in their plans over the next three seasons, this deal (#43 for #44 and McCrae) becomes a salary dump and a very good outcome for WB.

If they want to retain McCrae there is no way a deal gets done as we won’t pay for a 30 year old.

I think (just my opinion) we’ll only take him if he costs us nothing in draft collateral and WB want his salary off their books.

GC gave up #7 for Geelong to take Bowes’ contract.

First 3 picks 7, (compo) and 24 - must keep

For our 4th
We will have a few of players in mind and likely to get them late in the draft

Macrae will be great acquisition

That I believe

Late picks are a lottery, but I’d rather grab a Garcia than a 30 YO, despite the fact he has been an A grade gun.

I am happy to get McCrae as long as we don’t give up anything to get him.

How do you know you’re going to get a ‘Garcia’ (who btw hasn’t made it yet, and I’m a fan!)

Could be a Hotton 39, Could be a Bytel, 41, could be an Allison 26, could be an absolute Dud

For every Dane Swan (58) There’s 10 Phillip Raymond’s 63 at that point in the draft!

You don’t, that’s why I wrote it’s a lottery.
I’d rather punt on a kid that take a 30 YO given we are not a contender.

That tells you all you need to know

How do you know they aren’t?

How do you know that McCrae is only interested in coming to us?
Maybe Lyon is a coach wants to play under.

Maybe McCrae thinks we are on the cusp.

You don’t know him or the StKilda coaching panel.

Like I said earlier, give the absolute minimum for him.

We hold all the cards, he’s nice to have but not required, if they don’t want to play ball then just move on.

Because you still need to be relevant - you need talent to secure wins

1/ to resign young talent like Wilson, Nas and Phillipou you need to be winning games - they won’t resign if we are losing 15+ games a season - a winning culture is vital. It’s why players stay!

2/ in the Steele, Marshall, Wilkie and Sinclair era we can still give the young core finals experience- we may not contend but we can play some finals footy over the next three years to expose the younger players, so when they are core they have experience in finals footy

3/ to attract decent free agents (and not the ones looking at going to a bottom club for $$$$
But actual 25 yo players who can come straight in and make the team better

Trade radio was suggesting, if the Dullbogs want too much for McCrae then the Saints should look at Matthew Kennedy from Carlton instead.
They said Kennedy is younger, salary wise he's a lot cheaper and he's a good player, i don't remember who they rated the better player.
