The Poe
I reckon this has gone on long enough.
Mattaes Phillipou.
The correct pronounciation* of 'Phillipou' is 'Philli-poe'.
Thanks.
* It seems his long-running Hunter C crusade is over. So saynta is looking for a new cause to champion. And this is it.
Therefore, after a short amnesty period that I managed to negotiate for everyone, those who continue to get this pronounciaton wrong will have saynta on their case.

Re: The Poe
By the way Dave. You're saying 'pronounciation'
The correct use of the noun is pronunciation
Not sure what sort of device you're on, but most modern ipads, android phones and iphones should be showing you that it was wrong. Obviously if you're on a desktop (like my old Dell Windows 8 system, then it's understandable)

Re: The Poe
I have nicknamed Mattaes "Winnie" - as in 'Winnie the Poo'
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Re: The Poe
To me he is the Pounami.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Re: The Poe
Yeah, I’m Mattaes would prefer to be called “Poe” than “Poo”. The latter reminds me too much of that sap of a tennis player.

Phillipoussis was a ripper
Played in a couple of Grand Slam finals, top 10 player
And won us the Davis Cup (when it was relevant)

Re: The Poe
People under estimate how extraordinary an athlete you need to be to be a top 10 player in the world in a mainstream high profile sport.

Re: The Poe
Yeah, but he was a knob, like pretty much all pro tennis players are. For mine, the men’s tennis circuit has sucked since John McEnroe retiredD.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Tue 24 Sep 2024 8:11pmPeople under estimate how extraordinary an athlete you need to be to be a top 10 player in the world in a mainstream high profile sport.

Re: The Poe
Daryl Braithwaite
Good St Kilda supporter
Phillipou is 3rd generation at West Torrens (now Woodville West Torrens) so any problems with pronunciation are exclusively a Victoria problem (noting pronunciation differences between SA and VIC generally with words such as “plant” etc etc)
His Grand-father was a very good player at West Torrens then Eastlake in the early 1970’s for 3 seasons then back to West Torrens
His father also played for Footscray

Totally agree. Indeed he won the deciding rubber for Aus in both the 1999 and 2003 Davis Cup finals. Suffered a lot of injuries.

Re: The Poe
If you are referring to Daryl Braithwaite the former Sherbet front man and solo artist, he is a Collingwood supporter.
Daryl performed at the Park Hyatt StKilda GF breakfast in 2009. He drew the raffle (called my name) with the prize a box for 11 people at a home match in 2010.
He asked if he could attend the match in the box (as a joke) I said you have to bring your guitar and wear a saints scarf. He said I’m happy to sing for my supper but I’m not wearing a Saints scarf.
Only time I ever met him but he seemed a ripping fella with a good sensing humor.
