I picked the Lions as my 'preference'. If both clubs play to their strengths it'll be line-ball.

Petracca was rated best in that draft - and clearly

We had the chance to pick our Heeney - we decided on a one dimensional, slow, unfit forward who was an unreliable set shot.

I want Sydney to lose rather than wanting Brisbane to win.

Again I will repeat we didn’t finish top 2.

B.M didn't say that we had the chance to pick Heeney

And my point was were last that’s why we had the chance. Sydney lost the GF and get free access to Heeney.

No I’m not bozo. Getting access to top end while contending is a huge advantage. They lost a GF and then got one of the best ranked kids in Australia. Then a year later the same they weren’t building a list they were adding.

Smart recruitment and development

Heeney was playing rugby as a kid, was identified as a 12yo and entered the swans academy and they developed him as a teen

They deserved first access (using their first pick) to secure him.

We on the other hand were gifted priority picks (extra picks) at the top of the draft. Recruited guns and fkd their development

So what you're saying is they got an advantage. Tell me what they did to get Nick Blakey.

Amazing how good the development is when you can add top end talent each year.

His dad was an assistant coach at Sydney

He lived there, wanted to play there (had a choice at Brisbane and North Melbourne as a FS)

They had to use pick 10 (pts value) to secure him

So they did nothing but got access to a very highly rated player.

Not only did they get access to Blakey they split their first pick and got the highly rated Rowbottom as well.

Yeah no idea how Longmire does it.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Don't mind both - too hard to call - either side 1-24

Norm Smith medal

Oli Florent - Will Ashcroft

Smart planning in recruiting

But again, they don’t just get gifted players for free - they paid a price - is that so hard to fathom?!

Curly

Have you looked at how they built the list and the number of late picks and rookies they have?!

Jealousy is a curse

Yes all clubs have the story of rookies and late picks being stars.

Sydney have also got the added bonus of being handed top end talent even when finishing in the top few. It’s a magnificent leg up and makes competing with them that much harder.

Lost a GF get Heeney
Top 4 get Mills
Finish 6th get Blakey and Rowbottom

If a recruiter can see exactly what they’re getting 4-5 years out it’s so much easier to prepare a list.
Would the AFL have given StKilda access to the Ashcroft brothers if Marcus Ashcroft was our assistant coach?
I think not.

If Ashcroft was in our academy and chose us then yes

But we’d have to give up our first pick (eg/Lalor) to do so

As they had to

If they didn’t get those three players, they would’ve been replace by 3 other FRPs and I’d back Kinnnear Beatson to work his magic

BTW
One, Two or three players don’t win you flags

Otherwise StK would have plenty
Given we had Lockett, Loewe, Burke, Winmar and Harvey in the same team
Or Reiwoldt, Hayes, Goddard, Dal, Milne, Fisher in the same team.

Three top end players to an already contending list definitely keeps you contending. Take Heeney Mills Blakey Rowbottom out and replace them with Laverde Milera and where would Sydney be.

They were contending in 2012-16 with that list

Those those players were only18-20 at the time

This is a whole new list

Built around
Heeney - Academy
Warner - Pick 39
Gulden - Pick 32
Grundy - Great Trade!
Rowbottom - Pick 25
Blakey - Academy
Papley - Pick 14 Rookie Draft
Luke Parker - Pick 40
McCartin - Pick 33
Lloyd - Pick 16 Rookie Draft
Ollie Florent Pick 11

Mills has hardly played a game this season

Then they’ve got Role players
Melican, Cunningham, Jordan, McLean

Great list build

What did you think of our AFL gifts?

#1 - 2000 priority pick
#2 - 2001 priority pick
Brendan Goddard (stripping Carlton of pics)

Yep we finished last and second last so we got the picks everyone else gets.

When we lost the GF the AFL didn't give us the best kid in Australia and then do the same again the following year. Then 2 years later give us the best key defender in the draft.

No
We didn’t just get picks for finishing last we also got a priority priority pick for winning less than 5 and a half games

Picks 1&2 2000
Picks 2&5 2001
Gifted Goddard in 2002

Take out Heeney and Blakey
Replace them with two first round picks the should have gotten
Can’t you understand that?

They used picks to get those players!!!!

Btw
See you’ve dropped Mills off

You say they used picks they used ordinary picks.

Yep instead of Heeney they could have had Laverde Hugh Goddard Dan McKenzie or Broekhirst that all went around the pick they actually had. For Mills they used picks 33, 36, 37 to get the 3rd highest rated kid in the draft.
Remembering they had just competed in Grand Finals and secured Tippet and Franklin who was only the best player in the AFL at the time.

Blakey they split their first pick and got the best key tall back in the draft and then the highly rated Rowbottom.

That is an incredible leg up to a team thats list was competing in Grand Finals.

No wonder they keep competeing they can't not compete.
