Re: Dougal has extended
That's a relief.
He had a great finish to the year....seems to have matured somewhat.
Now Battle gone, I'm glad Dougal is around again.

I saw the contract.
Normally there's a place to sign at the bottom of each page; each page of his contract had a half-page blank for his signature, because, you know, 'Dougs' and 'accuracy' are never in the same sentence

What game did he win for us by a desperate touch on the goal line, ending up in the crowd? Fantastic effort.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Wed 11 Sep 2024 8:24pm I saw the contract.

I find I can't criticise his performances this year and am pleased he is staying.

Not a fan of Dougal - gets beaten easily one out and plays off his man too much and is sketchy with ball in hand
But he’s a C Grade 199cm key defender and they are hard to find
Hopefully he took a haircut

Re: Dougal has extended
He has def been like that… touchwood, I felt like he was more accountable and disciplined on his return. He also stopped trying his dinky, eye of the needle passes that he is incapable of doing.
I actually think that he is a player that will benefit from better coaching and a more structured approach to defence.
What you’re describing BM, is IMO a hangover from the Ratten era where Dougs took the kick ins, stood where he wanted and pointed fingers/directed traffic at others.
I’m hoping that we’re past all that

Re: Dougal has extended
The stats don't back this up, he was top 10 in the league for defensive 1v1 loss rate this year across key defenders (Wilkie was 3rd FWIW)
https://www.wheeloratings.com/afl_stats.html?year=2024
I've been critical of his efforts too at times, but losing both him and Battle at the same time would be a disaster for our backline structure, so this is good news.

Do you think Ross Lyon makes him a better player?
He was rag dolled by Thilthorpe this year!

Re: Dougal has extended
I have been one of his biggest critics but this year he was noticeably better due to ‘staying in his lane’ and ‘not biting off more than he can chew’ etc etc you get the drift. Hope it’s not more than 2 years though and we find a better solution during that period.

Thank god he’s better than Aiden Corr, Ben Miller, Nick Murray, Josh Worrall and Sam Frost!!!!
A sack of s*** would be better than most of those!!!

Re: Dougal has extended
The elite fullbacks are possibly Taylor, Weitering and Andrews. The rest range from poor to good. Dougal seems high on the good level to me. It's not like excellent fullbacks are in abundance?

I think he has a better moral fibre than those three. That's important at St Kilda. Just ask Paddy McFartin.

Re: Dougal has extended
Put Wilkie in Dougals body and you'd have the best defender in the game by a mile.
Had a good game against Sydney, but also had many typical Dougal moments.
Also its hard to lose a 1-on-1 contest when you sit 5-10m off your opponent!

ALL defenders can be caught out courtesy of a lack of up-field pressure and the skills of forwards given advantage by those delivering the ball to them.
We saw the comparative with Cordy in the Final v GWS, Cordy attempting to take space by playing in front but no more than a witches hat.

Re: Dougal has extended
Sicily is a 187 medium intercept defender who gets freed up
Not sure why he’s on that list
Taylor is an elite intercept defender
Battle is an undersized Key intercept defender
Those player go for a lot of marks - rather than spoils - which is why they occasionally get outmarked.

Thilthorpe is a huge unit these days. I'm sure there are many defenders he can occasionally rag doll.

Dougal has 7 years on Thilthorp
As a 28yo 199cm Key defender you should not be getting towelled up by a 21yo key forward

I’m not even sure what your post means???
But I do know
I don’t get paid 500k plus to be on this site
Dougal is a professional athlete - hence the critique
