Re: Battle
Saints want to try to get a 1st round compo pick, according to SaintsTV podcast.
Depends on how much $$ Hawks offer him.
The deal will be done on Oct 4 when trade window opens...

Re: Battle
It comes down to the ever changing Rules of the AFL, Rules designed to afford publicity for the AFL 24/7, 365 days a year and benefiting certain Clubs at the AFL table.
St Kilda's response will be to defeat Hawthorn whenever we play them.
And to trust that, with a more difficult draw they are shown as imposters.
They still exist under the spectre and influence of Kennett which affords them their position at the AFL table.
Noting that Hawthorn appear embroiled in Court proceedings for the reason they are.

Re: Battle
As much as we would have liked Josh Battle to sign a new long term contract to remain at Moorabbin, it's not the end of the world, not by a long shot.
He's been an integral part of St Kilda's back six, but physically Arie Schoenmaker is the same size as Battle, but a much younger version, and has already demonstrated that with more experience under his belt can become more than a capable replacement at CHB, starting in 2025.
I expect Arie will be really glad Josh has decided to leave because he will be able to focus fully on training for that role in the off-season!
As Ross Lyon pointed out last week, footballers are professionals and will always go where they believe is best for their ambitions and financial security, so love of the club, coaches and team mates are only secondary considerations.

Howard was our third best defender, and now is our second best defender, and not because he's improved...

A bit of a kick in the guts. I hope Hawthorn get turfed out of the finals in the 1st week.

Re: Battle
Nine’s Tom Morris reported the Hawks’ offer accepted by Battle was less lucrative than the Saints’ bid which virtually rules out that Band 1 compo it seems.
So disappointing....

I find it hard to believe that he is going to the Dawks for less money. How does he secure his future doing that?silverhalo wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2024 4:57pm Nine’s Tom Morris reported the Hawks’ offer accepted by Battle was less lucrative than the Saints’ bid which virtually rules out that Band 1 compo it seems.

The way you know Tom Morris is talking rubbish is when sound comes from his mouth. Got chip on his shoulder after RL called him out at the press conference.silverhalo wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2024 4:57pm Nine’s Tom Morris reported the Hawks’ offer accepted by Battle was less lucrative than the Saints’ bid which virtually rules out that Band 1 compo it seems.

Re: Battle
Houston is not a replacement for Battle
He is a running back
Battle is a key back
They are not remotely similar
Caminiti will train with the backs in the pre season imo
King will replace Caminiti forward

Re: Battle
The one thing I've learned from the Hawthorn ethos is that one player is not bigger than the club.
This is no more true than now.
We made the decision with the best interests of the club and Josh made his decision with the best interests of himself.
Hopefully the AFL rules allow us suitable compensation, in line with McKay last year at least.

Re: Battle
Regardless of the offer, this is why we are a dumb club. Battle is a hard-bodied, strong defender, in his prime with no past serious injury history. They have targetted well and have a player that is likely to give several excellent years to them. He is a better player than Howard and they have made a wise decision, further improving a damn good list.
On the other hand, we paid a premium for Hill, who is not the type of player we desperately needed and absolutely stuffed up embarrassingly, without any common sense, on a cooked Hannebery.
Very, very disappointing. Wish it was Howard going but what 'smart' club would have wanted him?

Re: Battle
Not just that - age comes into it, length of contract Hawthorn give him, and his performances - i.e. Top 5 in the B&F.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2024 4:09pm Saints want to try to get a 1st round compo pick, according to SaintsTV podcast.

I think we should be eligible for first round compo. a 25 year old key defender is worth a high draft pick. The club should fight if this isn't forthcoming.

Re: Battle
Battle has been very good for us in the past three seasons. Very hard to replace.
No doubt we'll get screwed over with the change in the rules around compensation. Funny how the rules change in the very years we are in line to benefit. It's almost as if the AFL is watching our club and waiting for our turn to come and then proceeds to bend us over with malicious intent.
End of first round looks likely, which gives us little to play with in relation to securing the best midfielders and in relation to any possible trades

Re: Battle
So now we need not only mids, mids and mids in the draft but also a Ruck prospect, a Key Defender and a Key Forward.
Good luck with that Dalrymple.
Bye Battle.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
