St Kilda's Last Gasp Winners

Following Sunday’s fantastic win at the death over Carlton, I thought it’d be good to have a look at our other victories snatched from the jaws of defeat.

It seems when we have close games, it’s often either us hanging on for dear life, or it ends in heartbreak. We’ve been famous for a few crucial behinds too, but here’s the last gasp winning goals I can remember over the last 40 years.

2024, Round 24 vs Carlton at Docklands
Jack Higgins’ miracle snap with just 12 seconds remaining gives us a 2-point win as Carlton were playing for their season.

2019, Round 20 vs Fremantle at Docklands
Josh Bruce’s set shot puts us 3 points in front with just 40 seconds remaining after trailing for most of the day.

2018, Round 13 vs Gold Coast at Carrara
Jade Gresham snaps a ripper from the boundary to give us a 2-point lead with 60 seconds to go, having trailed by 39 points late in the third quarter.

2015, Round 11 vs Melbourne at Docklands
After going behind with less than a minute to go, Leigh Montagna swoops on the loose ball and bangs it through from the goal line with 20 seconds left, giving us a 2-point win.

2009, Round 14 vs Geelong at Docklands
Scores level, less than 90 seconds left, that Michael Gardner mark. Slots the goal with just on a minute remaining to give us a 6-point win in one of the greatest H&A games ever.

2004, Round 6 vs Brisbane at Docklands
Troy Schwarze’s 60m bomb gives us a 1-point lead with just under a minute remaining.

2003, Round 16 vs North Melbourne at Docklands
An incredible game of footy ending with Fraser Gehrig slotting a set shot with 38 seconds to go, giving us a 5-point win.

2001, Round 22 vs Hawthorn at the MCG
Barry Hall’s after siren shot giving us an astonishing 2-point upset win. This is our only after the siren win in the last 40 years, probably longer. Interested to know if there’s ever been any others?

1998, Round 6 vs West Coast at Subiaco
Gavin Mitchell converts from a free kick with 46 seconds remaining to give us a brilliant 2-point win on the road.

1994, Round 7 vs Sydney at the SCG
In what is still the best comeback of all time, having trailed by 48 pts with just 15 minutes remaining, Tony Lockett kicked truly for his 11th goal and a 1-point lead with just 22 seconds to go.

1989, Round 2 vs Carlton at Moorabbin
Tony Lockett converts from 45m out with 30 seconds to go, giving us a rare 4-point win over Carlton. Before Sunday, this was our last win over Carlton by a goal or less.

Great memories.

The Robert Elliott goal at Arden St in 1978 was very memorable and controversial. That was after the siren and the ball bounced through people who were on the ground.

I can’t go past Lockett 1989.

He kicked 10.7 that day on full-back-of-the-century Stephen Silvagni in the definitive best-on-ground performance. Didn’t get the 3 Brownlow votes however.

Troy Schwarze (2004) and Gardiner (2009) were also rippers

Saints socials posted that again recently and I still couldn’t believe the (I think Aussie Jones) shot on goal just before this was called a behind. Looked dead out of bounds on the full. Would have been a draw without it

Rd 8 1988 v Geelong , Winmar snap. Winning in Geelong is still just the best feeling .Still one of my fave all time games was the 1999 win in the dark (God bless you Ben Waldon)

Its funny you mention the 98 game v West Coast I think the best part of the last 90secs was the one eyed "commartry" of Ross Glendinning its gold

Joey Montagna's goal with 3 seconds to go against Melbourne at Docklands - 2016 I think it was - was up there.
