If the saints end up recruiting Shiel, a broken down injury prone hack, Bassett should consider sacking those responsible, even if that includes the coach.

100% agree. It defies logic that we would even glance in that direction. He would last 2 years maximum at our club and play about 15-20 games. Complete waste of time and money

It's only the opinion of the journalist. He's probably been fed some bulls*** and he's decided to go with it. Similar to the Rowan Marshall piece which was a complete fabrication from Tom Morris who wouldn't know his arse from his head.

Reported on talking footy , even had an interview with him saying we are talking to him & his management atm.
I might be wrong but I think we are still beneath him.

Re: Dylan Shiel
If we are looking to recruit him then Ross must believe we are a top 4 side who simply under performed a bit this year.
If he brings him in then he should be told by Bassett Prelim or gone, otherwise bringing in players at the end of their career makes no sense.
Maybe this is the mythical dual narrative "Coaching is not to blame as the list isn't ready to challenge yet. However, at the same time we need to top up for our flag push next year."
It completely defies any kind of logic that we would even be looking at him.
I don't believe this can be true, I am not a fan of Ross but even I can't believe he is this stupid.

Re: Dylan Shiel
Gawd...he's too old
He was planning to retire at end of 2023 because of niggling injuries, but somehow got over them (Dr Ageless and injections again?)
We don't need a has-been
A twitter post (by a Saints fan) says Shiel's on $800k and we might offer to pay half and Injectors the other half.

Re: Dylan Shiel
He’ll get a 2 or 3 year contract.
He’s an upgrade on Ross and a replacement for the injured Crouch.
We aren’t going to contend for a flag until 2028 and need a mature body to take hits. It’s a long season.
We’ve got underspend on the cap which we need to manage and yes that means paying this guy a big amount next year.
Sounds good to me.
If you were all list managers we’d have a team of U21’s and get smashed every week like North.
The goal is to nurture our kids until their training wheels are off.
You’ll all be doing 180’s and frothing over him when he’s in the RWB next year.

Re: Dylan Shiel
I hate this idea as much as the Tarryn Thomas idea.
What is the bloody point of getting Shiel into our squad?
If it costs more than a third rounder it is a terrible move.
Are we just a pension fund for other teams discards???

Re: Dylan Shiel
Maybe he comes with a draft pick like the Bowes trade?
We give them salary cap relief and we get Sheil and a pick.
What should have happened with Hannebery.

Re: Dylan Shiel
Lets look at the bigger picture... the only way we take Shiel is if they give us their 1st Rounder as well.
So we get Shiel, pick 7 & his massive salary and give up a 3rd or 4th round pick.
This is a salary dump for the Bombers like what Gold Coast did when Bowes went to Geelong.
That would be a massive win for us, and our future

I don't see how that works, when we all know how evil the Injectors are in trades

Unlikely to be their 1st pick but something like this is the only way in which we should take him on..take salary and get additional draft compensation.footynut wrote: ↑Thu 22 Aug 2024 9:12pm Lets look at the bigger picture... the only way we take Shiel is if they give us their 1st Rounder as well.

He's injury prone,
is not a like replacement for Crouch,
would instantly become nearly our oldest player,
has no history of success to impart on our youngsters ala Hodge etc...

Re: Dylan Shiel
Ross will be gone and Crouch is finished with a degenerative knee issue that’s 2 experienced mids out.
Shiel’s body is moving well he is looking healthy and would be an excellent pick up for 2 years to replace the 2 mids leaving. He has excellent line breaking speed still something we need if take him I always liked him. It’s 50/50 he lives bayside and is interested in coming if the bombers allow him as he has one more year to go there.

Sheil is a mature body, but not the type of player to take the hits.bakes wrote: ↑Thu 22 Aug 2024 6:05pm He’ll get a 2 or 3 year contract.

He’s always been quick and a line breaker, but he’s never been a physical type player.
As I have previously indicated, there must be a draft pick coming with Sheil as an Essendon salary dump, other than that this “reported” interest in Sheil is ludicrous and a display of incompetence by the Saints “IF” true (I very much doubt it is correct).
Don’t forget the BS peddled by the media last year when we were handing over our Gresham compensation pick for Sheil
Gresham and his compensation pick for Sheil

Re: Dylan Shiel
There is no way Essendon are giving us a pick to take on Shiel's salary.
They may agree to pay half of his salary but I doubt it.
Their salary cap should be fine as Heppell is retiring and apart from Merrett and McKay no one else would be on huge numbers, maybe Stringer.
He is spending a lot of time over the last couple of seasons in the injury room.
This is non-sensical, we are not challenging and won't be next year either so how does he help?
We have plenty of experience in Steele, Sinclair, Marshall, Jones, Clark etc... we don't need another mature head to lead the kids around.
