Re: Nothing like beating a Foundation club
We were humbled by the OG though.
And we're not counting the Lions (Fitzroy)?

OG = "Original Gangster" but commonly used for just the originalSaintPav wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2024 9:53pmWhat the f*** does that even meanLife Long Saint wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2024 8:59pm We were humbled by the OG though.

The first club was Melbourne.
I assume that you get the Lions/Fitzroy connection, or do you need that explained?

Re: Nothing like beating a Foundation club
The Lions - tricky one. Fitzroy merged with the Brisbane Bears and have taken their history, records, etc. Only half a dozen or so Fitzroy players went up there when they merged. They kept their nickname but not much else it has to be said. In contrast, Sydney didn't even rebrand themselves as much else than what they were at South Melbourne/Albert Park for many years, in fact they were just called 'The Swans' for a decade.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2024 8:59pm We were humbled by the OG though.

I don't know how many Fitzroy supporters stuck with them, but they seem to get better support when we play them down here than many of the other interstate sides, so I will go with a fair few.
The answer is; technically no, because of the reasons above, and because I don't know if many of their supporters could even find Fitzroy on a map of Melbourne.
What do others think?

Still got Geelong (1859) and Carlton (1860) to come! Be a nice way to finish off the season...

Looks like RTB might be treating this one against the Cats as our Grand Final. Hoping that we go all out to get the big 'W' here. Good to see!

No...Didn't get Melbourne or Fitzroy (Bris).
Humbled by both.

Re: Nothing like beating a Foundation club
The Lions one isn't technically a foundation club TGZ. Fitzroy merged with Brisbane Bears and absorbed Brisbane's history and match records. Fitzroy weren't even really called the Lions before the 70s when they moved to (ironically the Junction Oval). Before that they were the Maroons, and for a brief period, The Gorillas, in the 50s. Unfortunately, Fitzroy as they were no longer exist, except as a D-Grade ammos team, called the Fitzroy Reds - so called because Fitzroy changed their colours with the introduction of colour TV in 1975.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Sun 25 Aug 2024 8:44pmNo...Didn't get Melbourne or Fitzroy (Bris).

That is the difference between them and The Swans, who moved as South Melbourne, to Sydney as an entity.
But yes, we couldn't beat Melbourne unfortunately.
