Re: New Logo Incoming
Really hope they don’t f**k this up. If the merch designs are anything to go by I’m not optimistic.
Pretty fed up with how corporate footy has become. Changing an emblem I’ve grown up with is just another lost connection with the club I feel.

Re: New Logo Incoming
I couldn't agree with both of you more strongly. !!
We all have been so proud of that crest for pretty much our whole lifetimes because that crest is "real", in that it was created to recognise a very special effort by the team and was NOT dreamed up by some corporate marketing guru just because it looked good.
I know that it is too late to do anything to change the club's decision but I am very saddened by this.

I reckon we should go back to being called The Panthers, hasn't done Penrith any harm!
And by the way, there is no Saint Kilda, it is St. Kilda - like Roskilde.

Correct, we are named after a ship, which was named after the island in the Scottish Hebrides which was named after a Norse place, like Roskilde.

Re: New Logo Incoming
I hope this isn't a slippery slope, although it would be incorrect to say that this is our first rebranding.
We were called the Southern saints in the 80s and that was on our shield too at that time.

Re: New Logo Incoming
As one of the older Saintsationalists I don't have a problem with changing the club logo.
In life, change is a constant, and in an era where professional sporting clubs rely heavily on corporate sponsorships, rebranding is likely to spark new interest that can lead to a lot more money.
In 1996 when Footscray FC decided to brand themselves as Western Bulldogs I expect there would have been thousands of hard core supporters who objected to this fundamental change.
Changing the cosmetics of St Kilda's identity is no big deal, we'll always have the RWB colours and be known as "The Saints", and that's all that matters!
And as an afterthought, imagine how much the club will rake in from members and supporters buying all the new merchandise!

We worry about the important things at StK
Social issues, branding and the like
None of it actually matters a fk

Re: New Logo Incoming
Apparently the opposite.
We have the current longest standing logo in the league.
Apparently we care the least about the branding.

Re: New Logo Incoming
That's just rubbish.
It all matters -- all these 'details' are part of our club identity, integral with the things at the top of the list -- the name, the colours and the basic jumper. It is a much more complex interrelationship than you think. And it cuts deeply into our imprinted emotional identification with the club.
It is hard to define what's essential to keep, but it's very easy to stuff things up.
Were you happy with the canary yellow version of our jumper? Were you OK with us being the "Southern Saints"? Did you really bond with Nicky Winmar's mess of an indigenous round jumper? (Sorry Nicky, to me you were our greatest footballer ever, though perhaps not graphic designer.) They were obvious fails -- though not necessarily for obvious reasons of content.
Look at the Australian flag. Changing (or keeping) the flag is not going to make us a better country. But it obviously means a lot to pretty much everyone how well (or not) it continues to represent our country and our emotional allegiance to it. In terms of its symbolic content it fails laughably to represent our modern nation. (We're not a colony, we wear green and gold, etc) But we are, in the main very attached to it. (leaving content aside) it's a great flag! And nobody's come up with any alternative design that's anywhere near as good. They've all been abysmal, and roundly rejected, (except, perhaps the Eureka flag, which just has too many far left and far right associations to work right now.)
We're stuck with the best flag ever -- by historical accident really -- despite all the seemingly reasonable arguments against it.
Canada, on the other hand, did a great job of changing their national flag.
New Zealand, on the other hand, totally fluffed it.
It is not an irrelevant issue and it is not a simple task -- and it certainly should not just be left to the marketing department to fiddle with.

Re: New Logo Incoming
scuttleShake's distinction between "the logo" and "the crest" is relevant -- I hadn't thought of it.
The crest -- to me is basically sacrosanct the way it is.
The logo -- which I take it to mean the graphic rendition of the the magpie, the roaring lion, the bomber, etc etc -- is also very important, but it's exactly the sort of thing that does need periodic updating.
If it's the logo that's being changed I look forward hopefully to the new version.

If it makes any difference, the official announcement from the club says “…we are unveiling an updated crest to lead us into the new era”avid wrote: ↑Sun 20 Oct 2024 11:42am scuttleShake's distinction between "the logo" and "the crest" is relevant -- I hadn't thought of it.

Re: New Logo Incoming
It is rubbish- trivial
It doesn’t change anything on field- that’s all I care about
Every decision made, needs to be about winning a premiership - if it doesn’t relate to that, it’s not important
Keep the crest (do you know its origins?)
Keep the classic tri colours
Pride comes from history- not a fancy modern bulls*** design

Re: New Logo Incoming
If anything I'd go full retro, including the size. It's a magnificent and timeless design. Any corkhead from marketing would be proud to have come up with it. I've yet to see any tampering improve on the original.
And while they're at it, what's happened to the size? Shrinkflation? Restore it to its former prominence.
I've just watched some historic, silent footage of us playing against Footscray and Fitzroy at the Junction Oval way back in 1963. The Shield was large, covering the entire span of something akin to the size of a human heart.
That was part of the original meaning. It represented heart, courage in the face of adversity, and loyalty. It was designed and awarded in 1933 after a win over Norf at Arden Street.
The filthy shitboners of the day gave us a literal bashing everywhere but on the scoreboard. Broken bones, concussions and other wounds, reduced us to just 15 men on the ground when the final bell went. We had hung on to claim the second most famous win in our history!
So the most iconic and attractive logo/badge in the history of the VFL/AFL was born!
FWIW, I have always believed a larger version of the shield should take pride of place in the centre of the white panel.
As much as I loved the stick man jumper this year, we missed a chance to feature the shield as the highlight of the jumper. I know someone is out there who is adept at drawing these sorts of things using graphic design software. Go to it!

Why the f*** would we get rid of our beautiful and historic motto which is probably our only point of difference?!
Short sighted and idiotic.

We inflated the logo for the 150th year, and we had to get special permission to do so.

Re: New Logo Incoming
Loris, I hear it won’t be much of a change to the crest, but this still strikes me as silly (and needless) corporate rebranding. That crest has been worn on the guernseys for the last 91 years and is sacred to most of us lifelong supporters. What gets my goat is that the club didn’t even consult us about it. Since we don’t think twice about shelling out for memberships - not mention, by the merchandise - every year, that we’d have some say in the matter. Anyway, let’s hope they haven’t buggered the design up too much

Yes, hope so.
Improvements that you don't really notice are fine by me.
Anything more is unlikely to be an improvement.
