NGA rule changes
https://www.afl.com.au/news/1173998/afl ... d-of-draft
NGA rules could change as early as this year, possibly going back to the old days of “bid at anytime” like the Ugle-Hagan days.
This means we can grab the 2 players in our NGA.
Anyone know anything about these 2 guys?
Adrian Cole and Lennox Hoffman.

Re: NGA rule changes
Thank you Bassett and Lyon.
These guys are continuing to lobby hard for change to get fairness.
Many other heavy hitters behind the scenes also making noise.
Still some work to do though to get fairness in equalisation.
Bassett has to keep his eye on this with Tasmania coming in.

Re: NGA rule changes
Both have slipped into TOP 40 calculations and are defenders.

Good old Laura! Bowing to pressure. She should make helmets compulsory.

Re: NGA rule changes
So who is the player that Collingwood or one of the other big clubs look like missing out on if the change isn't made?
I would bet there is one and that is the reason for the push for this this year.
What a surprise the Bombers have a potential top 10 NGA small forward.
The AFL is truly corrupt.

Re: NGA rule changes
It does look like it's a flip-flop rule, it wouldn't openly be dependent on who has a very good NGA prospect available butSinCitySainter wrote: ↑Wed 17 Jul 2024 4:45pm So who is the player that Collingwood or one of the other big clubs look like missing out on if the change isn't made?

it could quite easily be inferred.
Hopefully, whenever we have a very good NGA prospect available the rule isn't flipped back to NO bids
until after pick 40, for whatever reason the AFL deems plausible.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: NGA rule changes
I think more than likely this is basically a concession that they aren't going to be doing anything about the northern academies. Gives the Vic clubs a tiny bit of the fairness back.bobmurray wrote: ↑Wed 17 Jul 2024 5:44pmIt does look like it's a flip-flop rule, it wouldn't openly be dependent on who has a very good NGA prospect available butSinCitySainter wrote: ↑Wed 17 Jul 2024 4:45pm So who is the player that Collingwood or one of the other big clubs look like missing out on if the change isn't made?

I wonder if they are still planning on changing the bidding points/rules or if this will be it.

Re: NGA rule changes
For NGA players, wouldn't it make more sense to prevent a matched bid for first round talent?
If you seriously want to make the bottom teams better, then allow them unrestricted access to talent.
Once you're past the first round, then all bets are off.
To make the first round pure, do not allow a compensation pick for a free agent before the end of the first round. The AFL need to start diluting the compensation gained for a free agent.

NGA rules changing to allow matching bids up to pick 1 (was 40)
Good news for us if we want Cole, Lennox or Linder

Re: NGA rule changes
This is a change that will advantage the bombers more than anyone else. The two NGAs that we had are only 50/50 propositions to be taken in the top 40.
The change that will really hurt is changing the free agency compensation so that any contract over 5 years will not improve the compensation offered. Given Battle supposedly has a 6 year offer on the table from hawthorn this could directly impact any compensation we receive if he leaves.

The current rumour today is that he is staying. One poster on BF stating his source is one of Battle's parents. Some of the Haw's posters are also now stating he is staying.
This might be why the Hawks are now strongly chasing Barass.

Re: NGA rule changes
Would we have been better off in securing McKenzie with these rules?
I don’t know the answer, but would we have had to use our #10 that we used to pick up Phillipou to match Hawthorns bid, or could we have secured multiple 2nd/ 3rd round picks (below 54) and kept our first rounder as well as securing McKenzie?
