I’d say Billings has had a much better career and is a better player - his body is cooked, once your back goes - you never really get back to your best.
Very generalised statement. Sam Walsh for instance seems to have come back okay this year. BM, you have been defending Billings now for three or four years, Keep telling us that he’s a good AFL footballer and that he’s better than anyone typing on here. First up every AFL footballer is better than anyone on here. So what? everything is relative. you keep quoting Billings’ stats but at the end of the day we all have eyes. Billings career overall has been disappointing. He doesn’t or didn’t have the general hardness that is required to play at the level. He is about as tough as Brad Hill. The difference is Brad Hill has elite skills and elite running ability both in speed and endurance
So.... "He doesn’t or didn’t have the general hardness that is required to play at the level". Even though he has played at the level 166 times! Doesn't correlate.
Yes, Brad Hill is a better player, and Billings hasn't justified pick 3 (along with plenty of other pick 3s), injury has cruelled his recent years, perhaps his career, but anyone playing that many games can't be that bad a player. Can't compare Sam Walsh to Billings, Walsh a far better player, and was his injury history the same? No.
Injuries aside, has very good skills and endurance - check the kms covered per game pre injury, he was always in the top 5, often ahead of Hill.
Played 150+ games at Saints, and I hope he gets back to his best at the Dees.

It’s a misnomer that gets spouted by arm chair experts

They use their ‘eyes’ which unfortunately is connected to a brain with no footy knowledge

My eyes tell me Billings is playing VFL.

But apparently he is a good AFL player.

Something isn't adding up.

Was a good AFL player - like Membrey or Seb

He has played 166 AFL games you know

His back injury has curtailed his career

Oh I don’t think comparing him to Ross and Membrey helps your argument

Comparison was more about their waning output

Membrey and Ross are not the players they were

Nor is Billings

At his best, Billings played excellent AFL footy

Check out his best seasons!

Check out his average ones.

There would be no arguments if he reached either players out put and consistency. There’s 2 players that got the absolute best of themselves

I reckon skeptic's hit the nail on the head. He was just so disappointing in his career with us. You kept getting flashes of what he might be capable of, always thinking this'll be the game, this'll be the season. If he'd had less potential he wouldn't have been anything like so annoying!

I will never forget his game against WB when he virtually won the game off his own boot in an unbelievable last quarter.
That showed me what he was capable of.
Alas, he didn't play to that level often enough or consistently enough for my liking.
Still, he managed 150+ games of AFL for us, which is an achievement.

Haha. Hilarious. The oracle speaks. He played state level football for TASMANIA you know. Probably about the standard of EFL or NFL. About the same population area it covers 😆

Disappointed fans because a guy didn’t turn out to be a superstar.

Was that his fault, are we accusing him of not trying?

The other game that stands out is his one against Carlton which was the infamous Carlisle game.

Kicked something like 4 goals in the first half and tore it apart. Seemed like every touch after set something up.

Best game I ever saw him play.

A measure for me is as people have pointed out this thread: 160+ games. How many times was he the match winner? I can think of two.

Go through the maligned HFF/forwards of recent years and though most haven’t been rated highly… most have churned out a more match winning performances.

Would easily take what Gresh and Higgins have already produced to Billings career

Why do you keep saying this?

Because when you lay the blame at the player for underperforming

You are suggesting he did not give 100% in some regard

Which I know to be bulls***

It doesn’t take a psychologist to identify transference.

I doubt very much that he didn’t try when he played

Did Jack offer to take a pay cut to stay with the Saints, the Club he always gave a 100% for?
He worked hard for the money, worked hard for it honey, but didn't always kick it right.

Is the transference also akin to creating a strawman argument?

I'm trying to upskill in the detection of these types of persuasive argument skills and just wondering if BMs communicative strategies regularly employ the strawman argument when confronted with a compelling counter argument?

Just so I’m clear on what you mean… define what you mean by Strawman

I’m just stating facts

Personally, I would take being an AA under 18, 166 AFL games, averaging 20ppg, 30 Brownlow votes and a top 5 Best and fairest as a footy career

There are a lot of players who don’t reach that level of output!

Saints supporters don’t like to admit he was decent because we gave him the arse!

My understanding of a strawman argument is one that is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent. One who engages in this fallacy is said to be "attacking a straw man".

some of that is cut and past but that is my understanding...??

So the Gresh.
Kicked a nice goal, stole a goal from a teammate, cheeky monkey;
Caught htb a couple of times (slowing up G?);
Copped a real solid bump that put him down for the compulsory 8 count.
Ok but not anything to regret, I thought.

Three months ago, he'd gone from #222 in the comp to #33.

Fair to say this article hasn't aged well, as Gresh has fallen off the cliff after that article.

I was paying particular attention to Gresh yesterday as I considered him in a few bets but ultimately steered clear. None the less, I kept an eye on him as he was interesting to me.

Had 3 touches and zero influence in the first half.

Then he came alive alive with like 5-6 touches and a goal in the first 10min of the 3rd and was smoking.

Then I don’t know if he got hurt or something but he went on the bench for the next 10min (which is a long time) and came back to almost no influence. As said, he got on the end of one and had a kick or two in the last but he was essentially nonexistent for 85% of the match.

The only way you get away with that is if you win your team the game. He didn’t.

He copped a very big hit in a contest if I recall correctly. Don't think he was concussed. I think he was definitely winded though

He had to come off and maybe took some pain killers. Could be nursing some sore ribs, a corky or at the very least some nasty bruises
