Mitch Owens
I look at him, and don't see the growth that I predicted. Did I set my expectations too high? Did he bulk up too much? or is he being played out of position? He was recruited as a utility, whatever that really means. Is he a midfielder, a 2nd ruck, a forward or the intercepting defender that replaces Battle?
I would love to see him start in the middle, and just get told to hunt the footy and get his hands on it first.
What do you think? How do we get the best out of him?

Re: Mitch Owens
Very difficult conditions for forwards - the game revolving around the ruck contest and the ball being pushed forward from those contests, so territory such that any fortuitous free kick or disposal error results in a shot on goal
The number of Adelaide mids receiving votes was instructive
To Owens, his numbers were down but that is not to say he was not contesting, which he did
Perhaps the problem with him in the midfield rotation is a combination of the need for a contesting player forward and the presence of Steele who, to me, is like for like

Seems we had about a third of the team that didn't play well?
Who else would you drop?

Re: Mitch Owens
He's a forward, was recruited to be a forward.
I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes in a dry forward line with Max out and playing second fiddle to my man Coops.

Re: Mitch Owens
The way Owens has been playing, if he was dropped and Allison was given a game, it probably wouldn't make much difference.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
Re: Mitch Owens
Sharman to me is akin to Battle down the other end
They are both undersized for key positions
As is Owens

Re: Mitch Owens
Are you sure?
I thought he was recruited as a ruckman
Weird….in his U/18’s year they were describing him as “Sandringham Dragons onballer” in this article below

Oh man a pronouns joke. So funny. So funny I almost forgot about players being tried in new positions or even out of position.Vortex wrote: ↑Mon 15 Jul 2024 9:46pmIf you identify as a mid but the coaches play you in the forward line what should your pro nouns be?Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 15 Jul 2024 9:13pmAre you sure?

Re: Mitch Owens
With Hill and Wilson on the wings, Wood could play as the third tall alongside Membrey and Sharman.
That allows Owens to have a go in the middle. Take the risk on Wood not being able to help defend, but the team being more potent in offense.
We're out of the finals race. We should be experimenting as most teams in rebuild need to do
Wood could easily play out his career as the third tall

Re: Mitch Owens
They are born as defenders but they grow up knowing they are goal kickers and don't know how to act around other goal kickers until they start secretly attending opposition matches to watch teams who score freely. At these matches they feel like they can be themselves without anyone judging them, they feel safe and are happy to openly admit they are goal kickers.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Mon 15 Jul 2024 9:58pmWhere - What - Why!Vortex wrote: ↑Mon 15 Jul 2024 9:46pmIf you identify as a mid but the coaches play you in the forward line what should your pro nouns be?Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 15 Jul 2024 9:13pmAre you sure?

Re: Mitch Owens
They are about the same height as Nick Riewoldt, but, it's a different era where Key Position Players are around 200cm,
except for Steven May, who is about the same height as Sharman and Battle.

Re: Mitch Owens
Owens is certainly not impacting games in the way I had been expecting this year, but that may be due to the coaches instructing him to play a particular role. I wouldn't think that he needs to be sent back to the seconds, but with Phillipou out he could well play a tall midfield role at the contests, which the Pou was doing quite well since his return to the seniors.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Re: Mitch Owens
But, how do Sharman, Battle and May compare on weight
So May is able to command space with his bulk
How would Sharman go on May?

Re: Mitch Owens
Mitch is out of form. He is getting out-positioned in forward contests, and for a strong bodied forward, that's not on- just not getting enough of the footy. Lyon might be trying to get him to play various roles, but it's not working, so needs a rest in the VFL to work on a few aspects of his contested game. A big problem this season is that the forwards are just not getting enough of the footy in contests.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Wed 17 Jul 2024 5:39pm Owens is certainly not impacting games in the way I had been expecting this year, but that may be due to the coaches instructing him to play a particular role. I like “gettable”, it kind of suggests you are cheeky yet approachable.
