Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
I haven't seen any reason why we should have drafted him yet. He just looks like an average VFL player. We couldn't have sucked the ability out of him yet, surely.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Won't play until he learns the structures. Receives weekly feedback from Lyon and video footage of various stages he was positioned correctly or vice versa.
Says Lyon has got set goals for the younger players and expects them to all be ready at the start of 2025.

There is a reason players aren't drafted...

Yep opportunity, location, injury, late bloomer, change of sport. Plenty of reasons.

Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
That's just an astonishing statement.
All three of our AA squad last season were not drafted in the traditional manner.
All were taken in the rookie draft and both Marshall and Wilkie were mature age recruits.
Make of that what you will.

They aren't Private school boys from Sandy or Brighton so can't play.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 12:36pmThat's just an astonishing statement.

Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
Im hoping he will be given midfield minutes at some stage in the near future. Given that we recruited him because of his midfield game and we havent tried him there raises questions.

Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
Do you reckon he was pissed off that the Saints picked him up before the Dawks hence his form drop off?

The mid-season draft is another step away from the rookie draft.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 12:36pmThat's just an astonishing statement.

Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
Is it though?
Most clubs have been able to pick up useful players in it.
Sharman has been handy for us...Probably better than a lot of players we've picked up the traditional way.
I have said many times that our player development was lacking for many years. Most of our team are either imports or mature age rookies.
That tells me that we have been no good at spotting and developing 18yo players, although we are improving on that front.

Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
You are kidding right... do you have any idea of the quality of players that have been picked up in previous mid season drafts eg Masimo DAmbrosio (Essendon/Hawthorn), John Noble, Joe Richards and Ash Johnson (Collingwood), Sam Durham (Essendon) and Jai Newcombe (Hawthorn), Ned Moyle (GCS), Cooper Sharman and Max Heath (St Kilda), Jai Culley, Harry Barnett, Jack Hutchinson and Ryan Maric (WCE), and a number of this years draft have already debuted in the AFL.The_Dud wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 2:36pmThe mid-season draft is another step away from the rookie draft.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 12:36pmThat's just an astonishing statement.

We would kill to have Newcombe, Durham, Moyle, D'Ambrosio & Maric running around in Saints colours.

Jai Newcombe goes alright, a couple of others above are handy, but a lot have barely played, or not at all.SteeleSaints wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 3:21pmYou are kidding right... do you have any idea of the quality of players that have been picked up in previous mid season drafts eg Masimo DAmbrosio (Essendon/Hawthorn), John Noble, Joe Richards and Ash Johnson (Collingwood), Sam Durham (Essendon) and Jai Newcombe (Hawthorn), Ned Moyle (GCS), Cooper Sharman and Max Heath (St Kilda), Jai Culley, Harry Barnett, Jack Hutchinson and Ryan Maric (WCE), and a number of this years draft have already debuted in the AFL.The_Dud wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 2:36pmThe mid-season draft is another step away from the rookie draft.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jul 2024 12:36pmThat's just an astonishing statement.

If that's the hit-rate from mid-season drafts then I'm happy to stick with the opinion that if you get a handy player to temporarily fill a hole you've had a big win.

Re: Mid season draft pick Hall
I bet Hawksthorn played a midfield recruit in the midfield when they got him.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
