Battle
Is definitely going to Hawthorn
On a big deal- 6 years at 800k per year
There is a very good chance we will get First round compo
Either at pick 5 (following our first pick) or pick 19 (end of first round)
We desperately need these picks as we should now go into a full rebuild
Nasiah, Owens, Windhager, Phillipou, Keeler, Caminiti, Wilson, Collard, Hastie, Garcia, Schoenmaker
Are the next core
Plus 4 picks from each of the next 2 drafts
Just hope we can keep
Nas
Collard
Schoenmaker
Phillipou
All have go him factor

Battle for pick 19 would be a(nother) list management disaster for us.

Re: Battle
Well if those 4 players leave there needs to be an honest examination of why. I don't believe they will but possibly hopeful thinking.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 01 Jul 2024 10:27am Is definitely going to Hawthorn

If they do go use the draft compo wisely, eh.
Let's hope it never happens.

What did Essendon give up for McKay. I think Battle has his measure.
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Battle
It all depends on the size of the contract and length. They were saying on the radio this week that if it is 6 years and $800k then it would be , base don history , level 1 which is directly after the current first round pick. At this point in time that would be pick 5, so we get pick 4 and 5.
Tough one as would hat e to see him go however $800k for 6 years is a lot to pay a guy who has never made the top 40 AA squad and B & F 2023 & 2022 - 10th

I was there yesterday, and I can tell you that Josh Battle is an absolute star and should be kept at all costs.

So he is definitely gone .... because?
You spoke with him?
Or is it just a "Denuto" vibe?

Re: Battle
It won't happen. We offered him the $800k early in the year, we've since offered him more. So if Hawthorn beat our offer, which they need to, we get band 1 compo.
Our decision is simple, what's the maximum you pay for a third tall defender? Even if you rank Battle the best third tall defender in the comp.

Yes he is a star, the best third tall defender in the competition. How much do you pay for a third tall defender?samuraisaint wrote: ↑Mon 01 Jul 2024 12:37pm I was there yesterday, and I can tell you that Josh Battle is an absolute star and should be kept at all costs.

Re: Battle
I love Batts, but if we lose him I think it doesn't change the fortunes of the team right now. If we get a pick straight after our pick 4 or 5, then that helps cement the team rebuild
We are lucky that the Hammer has slotted in and he along with Shooy look to have us covered. Howard is a worry with his recent injury concerns, but hopefully he has learnt some lessons going forward
I'm sure the general in Wilkie down back will sort out the roles.

Re: Battle
Agreed, Battle for pick 19 St Kilda should match Hawthorn offer
Pick 5 for Battle after pick 4 could deliver 2 desperately needed good midfielders.
I would hate to see Battle go but he is half way through his playing career so will not be around when the 2 midfielders are in their prime.
But we need to get the draft right, no fishing around for Trout.
No stupid, stupid, stupid chasing a full forward who comes from a good family.
No light weights, just tough, fast and aggressive mids.
Get it wrong and recruiters lose their heads.

Re: Battle
I would rate him our number 2 (Wilkie - Battle - Howard) but a early first round pick is tempting. The G Train Legacy wrote: ↑Mon 01 Jul 2024 4:53pmIt won't happen. Take 4 and 5 to the draft and pick the best 2 mids available sounds pretty easy, but I don't have much faith in our track record...

Re: Battle
Is this like last year when you named like 15 changes that were guaranteed to happen but was just your opinion?
Agree it looks like that is what is happening. Not sure it is 100% though

If its #19 I'd say match the offer.
FFS we (reportedly) offered Stengle $750 a year.
In regards to these guys:
Nasiah - gun, must retain
Owens - should make a good AFL player
Windhager - should make a solid AFL player
Phillipou - should be a VG AFL player
Keeler - unknown
Caminiti - should be a solid KPP
Wilson - Could be an A grade AFL player
Collard - unknown
Hastie - showed some promise
Garcia - showed some promise
Schoenmaker - looks like a player, very early but new Tassie team will come hard at him if he is playing good footy
Likely that 4 or 5 of those guys wont make it beyond 2026, as is normal for a group of young players.

Re: Battle
So if Battle goes and Hammer is our NEW Key back, do we have a capable Tall Forward to give Forty Winx a chop out in 2025 ?
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Free Agency has been one of the worst inventions the AFL could have introduced for poorly run clubs like ours. It only gives power clubs more premierships.

We barrack for St Kilda so it's folly to be worrying about Premierships, never going to happen.
We'll always be on the Saints Big Dipper ride.

All this talk about matching if its a end of first round compo, he is unrestricted so no matching is available. If he decides he wants to go to the hawks, thats what happens and we get what we are given.
