Dangerous tackle on Sam Walsh

Post: # 2067223Post Scollop »

Looks like Patrick Dangerfield will be cleared by the tribunal and they'll overturn the charge tomorrow

The head is sacrosanct. Players have a duty of care....But if you're a star of the game with powerful friends, you're more likely to get off :x

I heard Gerard Whateley pushing the narrative that Dangerfield didn't 'drive his opponent into the ground with excessive force'.

He said it on radio today and repeated it on AFL 360.

Is that the very same Whateley who MC’s Geelong’s end of season functions at Crown - waxing lyrical re Geelong and every Geelong player?

So clearly a dyed in the wool Geelong supporter

Media, hey?

So driven by vested interests

No wonder there are so many redundancies across the sector, the Stokes 7 West the latest to sack hundreds and following Murdoch, 9 Entertainment and the USA owned 10 Network

Shouldn't have been suspended. Walsh threw his head into the ground trying to win a free kick. So many players do it now.

I can't stand Dangerfield, but he did nothing wrong in this instance.

I disagree that Walsh 'threw' his head ...

Dangerfield pinned both arms and Walsh couldn't brace or stop the momentum of his head going forward.

Dangerfield lifted his feet off the ground in order to bring Walsh down. If you run the risk of using your whole body weight to bring a player to the ground then you run the risk of getting suspended.

That's how they're ruling it these days.

What did Harley Reid do wrong? He copped 2 weeks for a tackle

What did Jack Higgins do wrong? He copped 3 weeks for a tackle.

Why should Dangerfield be treated differently?

All three were completely different tackles.

Higgins was deemed as a lift and dump - albeit a ridiculous ruling.

Reid slung Wilson, that's been a free kick for years. Worthy of at least a week.

Dangerfield's was a perfect tackle until the impact was accentuated by Walsh.

Aliir and Walsh both contributed to the end result and had no self preservation. Wilson had no control and no choice.

Once Walsh's knee hit the ground and provided a pivot point with Dangerfield driving him down and forward his head was going to hit the ground. I don't know what Walsh could have done.

I don't think Dangerfield did anything nasty. If one of our players got suspended for that I wouldn't be happy

Perhaps we need to hire Dangerfield as our advocate when a Saint goes up to the tribunal.

Why is it that when our players go up before the tribunal, their testimony is ignored and thugs like Maynard, Richmond's Tom Lynch and Geelong's Dangerfield are believed?

Gleeson (tribunal chair) gobbled up everything Danger told him. The fact that Danger pinned both arms and Sam Walsh's velocity and momentum drove his torso downward and resulted in his head whacking the turf, was totally dismissed.

The Tribunal deliberated for 40 minutes before returning a verdict, with chair Jeff Gleeson saying the three-member panel deemed Dangerfield's tackle as not unreasonable.

"The evidence is clear that Dangerfield ... pulled back with considerable force to attempt to prevent Walsh being driven into the ground," Gleeson said.

"This was not rough conduct."

The MRO/Appeals process seems terribly inefficient.
Fines seem a bit silly as well.
Maybe a points system with suspension when a certain aggregate is reached.
Christian well past his fit for purpose date.
AFL run by amateurs?

The Dan Butler tackle last year was worse, and he got off on appeal… 🤷‍♂️

How was it ‘worse’?

Butler tried to roll Blakey so that he didn’t faceplant.

More forceful, bigger impact.

Dangerfield tried to hold him up, you can see it.

Neither was worth a suspension.

Butler’s wasn’t more forceful. Get off the grass mate. Butler’s tackle was side on

Who weighs more? Butler or Danger?

Danger pinned both arms and didn’t allow Walsh to brace.

Butler’s tackle was a momentary hold and Butler could be seen releasing Blakey’s arms.

Dangerfield conveniently made that excuse ( ‘tried to hold him up’) after the MRO gave him a one match suspension

If I punch you in the face and then …I say to you that I tried to pull back so that it wouldn’t hurt as much, I guarantee it’d still hurt

Well, who would have guessed that outcome?

The AFL sinks further into the mire of a confected competition blighted by inconsistent and favourable for some only treatment across the confected competition

The Danger tackle was very similar to a hip drop tackle where the tackler unweights himself to bring the opposition player down

These tackles are now banned in NFL as they are considered dangerous

In watching the replay Danger wraps his arms around Walsh and then swivels/slips his legs from behind to front while suspended in the air with his whole weight hanging off Walsh

The absolute definition of a dangerous tackle method

Just listened to the nerd, a geelong supporter, and the fat f*** giving their explanation as why the cats captain got off . Was truly stomach turning and a bigger load of crap than normally sprouts from these assholes mouths.

No mention of favoritism or corruption.

If Laura has to try to rationalise ridiculous costly umpiring decisions the tribunal and appeals panel should have to give written explanations of their decisions and reconcile them with all other dangerous tackle decisions for the last three years, including citing the effects of rule changes.
Having no accountability for apparent inconsistencies is not good enough.
I'd respect the sham more if the obvious bias was acknowledged then at least people wouldn't have to agonise over possible reasons.
Just admit it's case by case and big teams big players have the inside running and "judiciary " can make it up as it likes. Same as umpires. Simples.

What really annoys me is that they ask someone what his 'intent' was and they somehow believe he tried to exercise care.

Why ignore the visual evidence that Walsh hit his head? Are they claiming that Walsh acted?

Should Sam Walsh be fined for staging?
