What a s*** team.
Not so much the team - but their supporters - well I guess the team as well.

So the AFL includes "full context" and "all the angles we have"

Well, in Australian Rules Football the ball is continually in transit (including contest) and it is umpired according to the (ever changing) Rules introduced by the AFL.

Unlike other Sporting Codes where there is reserve to challenge Umpire decisions (witness the NBA and the ability to call a time out and contest a Referee decision) there is no reserve to challenge in Australian Rules Football.

It comes down to what an Umpire views at any given moment (noting they do not have eyes in the back of their heads and that, given multiple on field Umpires, one does not overrule the adjudication of another plus where their focus is, so not exclusive) so the usage of "full context" and "all the angles we have" is just abject nonsense and invites scorn being visited on the AFL, a reactionary body which has lost control of its brief and which panders to vested interests and media (biased) "opinion".

Perhaps we could go back to the AFL Grand Final when Geelong beat St Kilda and review decisions made during the 100 minutes of that game, including by Goal Umpires?

And reverse the result.

Noting that when a Goal is given, the ball goes back to the centre of the ground and the contest starts again - so the ball not in the possession of the side which has been scored against as it is when a Point is scored and as it is in other Sporting Codes (so again making Australian Rules Football unique)

The AFL is on very dangerous grounds in commenting as it has.

It really has lost the plot.

On reviewing decisions - maybe the knee to the head of Hill - 15 out - in the pocket - maybe - just maybe - he would have kicked the goal. Swings and Roundabouts

Doesn't Dud always bang on about how the Umpires get it right every time - and that we should just cop what we are given??

If you were a Collingwood supporter would you have enjoyed seeing them win a final with 58 points or 60 points?

Did the opposition sides in those games not have coaches?

Ross is indisputably a great structural coach whatever talent or lack thereof he has to work with.
P. Roos may be the best ever at defence and negating oppo strengths.
Ross isn't far behind.
It should be possible to dislike his style immensely but simultaneously acknowledge his comparative advantage.
I guess the stat quoted is supposed to be derogatory. It actually shows you coach against Ross you better be on your game.

Supporters, real supporters should see through how the Bartels of the world see us a soft target and they can hide their inanity behind punching down on us. Parasite.
Packing the backline is a coaching move as old as the game itself, it may or may not save games but it is not going to help create a good team game in the longer term..it's actually bullish*t and the sign of a desperate coach. Lyon has brought this type of negative rubbish football to the club, and he can wear the consequences.
We held the opposition to 48pts - huge tick

We had 56 inside 50s - another huge tick

Inside 50s this week

St Kilda 56 Gold Coast 45
Essendon 60 Carlton 41
Sydney 56 Geelong 49
West Coast 58 North 43
Hawthorn 52 GWS 49
Bulldogs 45 Brisbane 64
Adelaide 46 Richmond 52

So we had equal 4th most inside 50s out of 14 teams playing

The issue is not the gameplan the issue is our inside 50 efficiency which was 29%

The "negative rubbish football" simplification is itself just rubbish

We had 56 inside 50s FFS

But hey playing an open shootout style and losing by 5 goals is way better

And another thing

Membrey found Henry who had run the F50 line and in space

The next cog was Higgins who, like Henry, had put in the effort to run forward into space and as an option for Henry IF Henry had not chosen to turn and run inside a vacant F50 himself

So the options from Membrey finding Henry were either Henry or Higgins having option on goal

Both Henry and Higgins stopped with the whistle in favour of King

Those putting that the free kick was the game were either not watching what was unfolding with Henry and Higgins or they speak from a Gold Coast bias

I have found post match analysis of this game bizzare (referencing Kane Corne's in particular). St kilda completely dominated all facets of the game except fwd50 entries and shouldve really won by 7 or 8 goals. To say a dubious free kick lost GC the game is a joke, they were only in the contest due to our inefficency in going forward, played off the park otherwise.

I also don't think we were over defensive, unlike GC we tried to be aggressive and get the ball moving at every opportunity, just not the finished product going forward and probably lack the midfield class to dominate teams this year.

Doubt most who have commented in the media even watched the game, I know for a fact Kane only watches 3-4 games a week (he has admitted as much many times) so perhaps he didnt actually watch the match?

I was on my feet knowing that we had a great chance to kick this one and win the game!!!!
The feeling at the ground was up - there was a massive roar when Henry Marked.

Have a closer look at that pic

Andrew stepping towards King to engage him

After this King turns to run back to the goal square .... possibly with a chance to lead out to the open pocket alas ... Andrew wraps him up

Dead right.
AFL Secretariat seem to be conceding an umpiring decision each week while ticking off a pile of shockers. Give the impression no serious problem, we are reasonable and listen.
It forgets we have first hand or recorded evidence of the actual circumstances.

Actually - that was after - try this one

Image

King tries to run past to get clear and Mac steps between him and where he wants to be - there was no 'joint' grappling - there was a forward trying to get clear - right in front - and a backman trying to hold him up.

I think the whistle had already been blown. The grappling occurred while Membrey had the ball.

Inside 50s are one metric

They don’t win you games

You need to equalise to score i50 - not allow two spare HBs to rack up 75 disposals from your entries

We are 6th last for average Inside 50's per game

We need more Inside 50's... but that's not our main problem....that's for sure.

We are very poor for Inside 50 efficiency

Efficiency Data: We are second last for Goals per Inside 50. We are also 2nd last for ALL Scoring shots at goal per inside 50.

AFL have already made comment

Saying the decision was incorrect

Which was obviously the case

bulls*** ... AFL said the umpire saw Andrew with arms around King and paid the free kick

So is that holding or not holding?

Arms around? Yeah I reckon thats holding ... when is that ever not holding?

McBurney contradicted himself

Umpires pay holding off the ball many times without comment but in this case apparently it wasn't holding even though Andrew had his arms around him ..... AFL are a fkn joke

Never have I once said that in the 15 years or so I’ve been on this site.

Though they do get it right a lot more than biased supporters do, which makes sense.

We should just cop it because for every bad decision you get, you also get one that goes your way, like Higgins kicking a goal from a foot over the boundary line to seal a game.

Some supporters just lack the ability (for some reason) to admit when we get a good run, but cry and sook and whinge at every 50/50 decision that doesn’t go our way. It’s deranged.

Swings and roundabouts 👍

And in that pic, look at the St Kilda number 1, the ball at the time in the hands of Henry who was free, having received the ball from Membrey who received it from Clark

As far as I could make out (because my focus was on Henry and Higgins - so not King) the whistle went when Henry had uncontested possession

King would have seen that unfolding as well, and would have looked to compromise his opponent into either marking King or blocking the unfettered run of Higgins (noting Henry could have just headed straight to goal)

King would have looked to improve the space Henry and Higgins had made for themselves

My comment was “we are in here”, then everyone stopped because of the whistle
