Always happy to win but are we really happy with how the game is being played? Less than 100 points total for the game and 30+ were helped by umpiring decisions close to goal. Pretty sure that’s the second lowest winning score at marvel, no surprise we have the honour of the lowest winning total from 2010.

there were some great passages of play from our boys .. I still can not believe all the negative crap going on here..let's go back to the 80s and watch a few games

our defence was amazing, the ball use of NWM, the courage of Hunter, watchings higgins and sincs go about it, the efforts of our upcoming assets like Dow,Caminiti, Owens..... I give up

THE AFL has conceded a late free kick against Gold Coast defender Mac Andrew on Saturday night should not have been paid, but the League has ticked off two other controversial calls from the weekend's action.

With Gold Coast leading by three points at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, Andrew was penalised for an off-the-ball hold on St Kilda spearhead Max King as the pair jostled close to goal.
Stephen McBurney, the AFL's Head of Officiating, conceded on Sunday that both players were grappling and the correct decision would have been to call play on.

"(The umpire) assessed that Andrew put both arms around Max King and paid holding the man. We think looking at the full context and with the benefit of all the angles we had, we think the better call in that situation was no call," McBurney said.

"We don't think there was enough to constitute holding and we think there was significant contact both ways as they were grappling and running for position.
Despite the error, McBurney said the umpire in question will continue to officiate at AFL level, saying "he absolutely will not be dropped over a decision like this".

"We can see why the umpire has paid the free kick. It wouldn't be classified as a major error or a critical error under our assessment. It was a judgement call," he said.

Our offence is a major issue, no matter how much anyone tries to sugarcoat it. It’s well and truly bottom 4.

Trying to convince yourself that kicking 7 goals against an average defence in perfect conditions is a good thing is some impressive mental gymnastics!

At this point (finals are gone) I’d rather lose playing well and showing promise than winning in an uninspiring dour struggle.

Ross is indisputably a great structural coach whatever talent or lack thereof he has to work with.
P. Roos may be the best ever at defence and negating oppo strengths.
Ross isn't far behind.
It should be possible to dislike his style immensely but simultaneously acknowledge his comparative advantage.
I guess the stat quoted is supposed to be derogatory. It actually shows you coach against Ross you better be on your game.

Packing the backline is a coaching move as old as the game itself, it may or may not save games but it is not going to help create a good team game in the longer term..it's actually bullish*t and the sign of a desperate coach. Lyon has brought this type of negative rubbish football to the club, and he can wear the consequences.

I wonder why so many great football minds on this page can't imagine that when the team is undergoing a flag winning rebuild when you are one of the poorest teams in the competition you must win as many games on the way you can for obvious reasons (supporters and sponsors), so putting the coach down for winning ugly is very trite IMHO.

I seriously swear there are umpires who see other not calling an infringement - such as putting the ball on the ground and not returning it to the umpire - or holding or something and it goes on all game - then suddenly they are the controlling umpire - and PING!!!!

We need to all call the fact that the AFL said this was a non free and ask about Curnow, Dixon, et al....
