Sandy vs GC
Missed most of the game but switched on in the last quarter.
Sharman just kicked a similar one to last week late in the last to put the scores level 82-82
Exciting finish!

Re: Sandy vs GC
Robbed!
Byrnes took a mark at 50m and ran over the boundary to complete it. He ran back inside following the same path to launch it to the goal square and the umpire said he played on from outside the boundary.

I missed the game, but Phillipou's stats don't look half bad. Can anyone who watched it tell me how he actually went?

Re: Sandy vs GC
Sandy didn’t deserve to win it, we’re outplayed in general play for the majority of the game. Sandy were better contested but as it got on the outside GC moved the ball far better.
A HB from GC racked them up (had 42) and was dominating and their midfield spread was better
Sandy relied on individuals will the footy at the source
Tom Campbell played one of the great VFL games to be BOG
29 possessions 12 clearances 7 tackles 30 hit outs
Zak Jones played 3 quarters on the wing then went into the middle in the last quarter and had 13 possessions and a number of clearances
It was he and Campbell who got them back in it
Sharman - typical VFL game. Dangerous forward, great hands and took some impressive contested marks and kicked a brilliant goal from the boundary to tie the scores!
Hugo - 3 quarters in the middle for not a huge impact, then went forward in the last and kicked 2
Collard
Couple of goals, his second was outstanding
Hall - played as a sixth
Didn’t do much 11 possessions
Phillipou - good first quarter (had 8) just ok after that.
Crouch - busy
Lots of contested ball, but lowered his colours to Tsitis who had 42.
Paton - Solid
O’Connell did a few nice things but didn’t get much of it
Allison played back - was OK
Hotton - did very little

Re: Sandy vs GC
Phillipou
Had 8 in the first quarter and 4 in each quarter after that.
Played as an inside mid, got a few clearances with handballs out of congestion
To a nice contested mark from a kick in.
Overall - 5/10 game - nothing to write home about

Re: Sandy vs GC
Agree he is like a statue when he wins the ball in contested situations. Until instinctive movement becomes natural he is never going to be a very damaging midfielder.

Byrnes? Yeah, Byrnes got pretty busy on the wing
He’s a pretty good runner with scrappy skills

Re: Sandy vs GC
According to the official stats, Phillipou also laid 9 tackles which, if he was playing inside mid, surely counts for something.

Re: Sandy vs GC
Clearance tackles are a dime a dozen
Ruck taps it down
Opponent gets hands on it and you wrap them up - they are important but nothing like a run down tackle

Re: Sandy vs GC
Once again, no system. Drew the game in spite of themselves.
Tom Campbell is a star at VFL level.
Phillipou looked slow again. I can't work out if it's a genuine lack of leg speed or just a poor reaction time. Can't see him getting back into the AFL team soon.
Byrnes was just okay. Good last quarter
Jones likes to go solo. Rarely brings others into the game. When he's good he's good. When he's bad he's horrid. Was reasonable and as mentioned, a big last quarter
Garcia showed bits and pieces. He's the type who just drives himself to every contest. If he doesn't make it, it won't be because of a lack of effort.
Collard is highly skilled and extremely quick. Pity he's playing in a team that has atrocious ball movement. When he gets it he's a class above the others
Crouch is still sore

If there was ever a player who doesn't look like a midfielder, it's Pou. Needs to be in the forward 50meher baba wrote: ↑Sat 08 Jun 2024 5:27pm According to the official stats, Phillipou also laid 9 tackles which, if he was playing inside mid, surely counts for something.

Re: Sandy vs GC
What's the knock on Campbell at senior level? No tank? No foot skills? Would have thought by now he could have been tested as a contest tap ruck who follow opposition #1 around the ground freeing up Marshall to float across the f50 arc (dropping Caminetti or Members). Ross mustn't value tappers.

I’d love to have seen him have a crack. He’s got a real… play like there’s no tomorrow desperation about now

He’s a beast at VFL level and just man handles opposition
Doesn’t have that size advantage at AFL level
And is actually a D Grade AFL player

No. Not at all.
However not sure why he isn't used similar to Mason Wood last week. Would be a very hard match up.

Re: Sandy vs GC
There is a massive gap between AFL and VFL.
The inside mids are very good at reading where the ball is going. It is why rucks are under valued. How often are taps lopsided and clearances equally so the other way.
Hit outs to advantage are very low percentage of ruck contests at AFL level.
