LDU

Post: # 2064123Post B.M »

Rumours that we are into him?!

Can’t see how that would work - he is contracted - he is not a FA - we would need to give up a minimum first round selection

Which would be pick 5 right now

Most intelligent analysts suggest we need to hit the draft hard and rebuild.

Would you consider a 26yo gun for an 18yo pick 5?

Probably not but it depends on the objective.

Management isn’t always good at thinking long term.

Hit the draft and try and recruit a free agent depending on who is available.

Pass.

Even if you just had LDU for 5 years, he's a known quantity . I keep saying that Ross is in a hurry

That's a 'sure thing' versus a 'maybe' in the draft

If Ross Lyon and our football department are serious about rebuilding organically for sustainable success, we wouldn't be doing this, but these guys aren't there for the future of St Kilda. They're looking after their job and their reputation

2026. North will be under cap pressure like GWS and GC were with all their high picks.

Or 2025 trade for Howard - a win win.

Even next year we may well have to trade for him if they match the bid .
NM probably will want more than 1 first rounder

Why LDU for Howard? If we are going to head into the world of totally deranged fantasy, why not LDU for Bonner? Or Sharman?

If LDU is somehow available to play for another club in 2025, it won't be the Saints. The only time we have ever been able to trade A-grade players into our club was when Gehrig and Hamill wanted to play under Blight. As far as I can see, the only big name player who is a massive fan of RTB is Brad Hill, and we've already got him.

Norf will be looking for a full forward.
A straight trade King for LDU.

Why? Are they getting sick of how accurate a kick on goal Larkey is and want to try something different?

the longer it goes the more it appears Battle will test FA market and as is the way will get a greater offer from elsewhere. North and Hawthorn are 2 sides screaming for big defenders.

If Battle wants to go to North and LDU genuinely wants to come to Stkilda surely something like Battle and 2nd round pick (likely in ealry 20's) for LDU North would have to consider on the basis next year he walks its on the basis of the formula.
They stuffed up on JHF so may take the bird in the hand.
Retain our top 5 pick also

Unfortunately Battle is an unrestricted FA so if he wants to leave he can go anywhere and we are at the mercy of the compo. Best we might be able to hope for is North offer him enough for band one compo and we trade something like that pick plus our second for LDU. They get Battle and picks say 6 and 23 and we get LDU and keep our natural pick 5.

A low first rounder and Dougal Howard would be in the realms of a reasonable trade for LDU.

What is LDU's motivation for coming to St Kilda?????

So he can become the whipping boy of SaintSational??

North will not trade for Battle, the only way they would go after him is as a free agent.
The problem we have is that if Battle does go as a free agent and we receive fairly high compo for him we will be restricted in looking for Free Agents ourselves as it would water down the compo.
If North want to trade LDU, which makes no sense given they are trying to build through the draft, they will be looking for two first rounders minimum. We cannot afford to pay that. I can see no way that LDU comes to the Saints next year beyond crippling our draft hand and salary cap.

Apparently North are mad on Trainor and have already floated the idea of trading out Pick 1 with other clubs. If we end up with 2 x early draft picks we might be able to work something to move up the order and pick up LDU.

As TDTL mentioned the club are keen to off load Howard, so perhaps North or another club assists with buying into the LDU trade.

Otherwise it will be a wait until 2025 when LDU becomes a UFA, if we are really interested and are willing to pay big $$$.

If LDU is 26 as stated in this thread, then he's going to be over 30 by the time North could possibly be contenders. In that time, they're going to have to pay Sheezel, Wardlaw & McKertcher (who will be stars) a fortune. They also desperately need key defenders because they haven't got any, in fact any good defenders at all.

I think that makes getting LDU in a trade possible, particularly if he decides he wants to go.

UFA is correct however there have been plenty of examples of players and clubs negotiating deals or wanting to look after existing club, such as when Dangerfield went to Geelong and even the fudged "non trade" with Gresham.
Not sure he wants to leave but the $$$ will probably see him go.

There isn’t really any free agents left that we are a realistic to go for besides Jarrod Berry and Bailey Banfield. So wouldn’t stress to much about that.

No leaving player is going to care about what deal their old club gets out of it, they will want their new club to be as strong as possible so ideally want their new club to give up as little as possible.

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Gresham a restricted free agent? That basically forced the bombers hand, they had to offer enough to make us happy with the compo, otherwise we just match and force a trade. The same thing that North would do to us next year if we are going down the free agency route.

History says there are examples where they have - Dangerfield the most well known could have walked to Geelong for a late first round compo but Adelaide worked out a trade which got more in for them and allowed Geelong and Dangerfield to structure a ocntract to suit them over years as opposed to having to front end to get greater compo. It is all about clubs wanting best compensation and well as receiving club wanting flexibility with cap .

Just gave it a quick look and Dangerfield was also an RFA (per this Adelaide press release https://www.afc.com.au/news/423982/deal ... angerfield) so he didn't have any real say in what geelong had to pay. Instead of matching or accepting the pick 14 compo Adelaide took geelongs offer of pick 9 plus some other little bonuses.

Going hard in the draft again this year means no trading for players. We don't have our own 2nd rounder so hope Adelaide doesn't finish the season strongly as we have theirs.

Then in 26 we go hard for FA and if there are players available to trade in we go then too.

The list management strategy is sound and makes sense. Delusions of grandeur last year would have tempted a few but glad we are sticking the course.

I would have thought that Cameron Zurhaar was one we would seriously look at unless he is already re-signed, which he could well be.
