Read an article on SEN - Pendelbury says the toughest opponent he has had across his long career was Lenny Hayes. Says Hayes, was a tenacious 2 way runner that’s what has set him apart from other mids he’s played against.
Pendelbury said many of the top class mids he’s played against were hard offensively, but he felt their pressure dropped somewhat defensively. Not Lenny Hayes said he was as hard offensively as he was defensively.
That’s quite an accolade from Pendles, as Lenny has been out of the game for some years now & there have been plenty of top class mids playing against Pendelbury since Lenny’s retirement.

I disagree that Hayes was the 'best player'. If I had to rate best player, I think early years it was Banger, later it was mainly Roo, other years Dal or BJ and some years it was Lenny.

He was easily the best leader, so I understand how you might be confusing 'best player' with 'most influential individual' and he was definitely our spiritual leader ( similar to Voss)

When did Harv's retire, the 08 Prelim? Harv's 91, 92, 97, 2004 and 2005 finals campaigns being his peaks were Lenny's were in 04, 05, 09 and 10...their peaks were happening at different stages....finals performances are what I remember mostly so apologies if I've left out something
