BUMP
I just watched FoxFooty show 'On The Couch'. They showed examples of leadership and connection on field.
Our leaders have as much responsibility as the coach to lift this playing group.
Steele is working his backside off the last month or so and he is leading the way for effort and consistency. Same with most of the leaders, but are we connected? Most of our leaders are playing well but do they talk enough... both between each other...and to other individuals on field?
Do our leaders have regular quick meetings out there on field? I'd love to see them support each other more and talk to each other more.
Secondly: These guys all cemented themselves as our best players AND as leaders prior to RL's arrival. Where is the next bunch?
Do we have the right people to mentor our young players to become future captains?

I understand what you're saying...But little things count. Did you watch 'On the Couch' with examples from Swans players? It's a mindset.
When I see our team on field, I feel like they're playing as individuals and not as s team. If Hammer or Sharman marks, where's the emotional support. Where's one of their team mates getting in their ear.
It starts at training. Talk to Caminiti about his goal kicking. Ask him during training what he does and what he thinks is important.
Then... during the game...get across to him after he takes a mark. Reinforce in his head for him to do what he said he'd do. Same with Cooper. How can he continue to miss easy set shots and no one is there to talk to him before his routine.
Is the coach being too negative on everyone?

Zero leadership.
I hope Lyon had a chat with Steele about his poor attitude, especially not giving chase.
We still don't have any players who stand up when. team is taking the game away from us, least of all Steele.
His goal celebration lacked more emotion than a Max King goal celebration.
He gets his stats up but Steele isn't a good Captain for our young side.
They should give it to someone else next season and let Steele just focus on his game as its clear that's what he needs.

Who is regarded as the best two way mid in the game - yes there is offence and defence
Steele gives 100% every week. He is a dual AA and has finished on the podium at least 5 times in the B&F
This year he’ll win his third
He leads by example

We were 49 points down at one stage in the last quarter when Jack received in the middle of the ground and he sold some candy, ran ten metres, took a bounce then kicked a lovely lace out stab pass to Higgins who was spoilt by Liam Henry also attempting to go for the mark.
Steele followed up and went to kick it to Henry again but it was a tired kick and intercepted by Neal-Bullen in front of Henry. Steele was buggered and dejected after his poor kick.
Steele thought the umpire was going to pay it as a mark, but the umpire called play-on, not 15. He wasn't the closest player to Alex. There was exactly 10 minutes and 14 seconds left on the clock.
Incidentally, Jack was easily our best player up until this time. Worked his ring off.
If you were frustrated and angry and dejected as a fan...right at this moment...I can understand your pain, but Steele shouldn't be the target of your frustration. Not justified.
If there's another incident,then give us a time frame. What quarter? Either you are talking through your backside or your bias is messing with your perception of things.

Steele has gotten away for a very long time with being the captain by being a good player and leading by example.
Now it's clear we need different on field leadership - of the old captain-coach style.

And why was Riewoldt a good leader? Because he was developed under a system that understood what leadership really meant.
Who do we have?
1- Steele - Capt
2 - Wilkie- VC
3 - Sinclair
4 - Ross
5 - Marshall
How many of those actually lead in addition to being our better players?
Leadership isn't making your best player captain, vice captain, or dvc...Some of the best leaders are players that you'd never put in the best players, but are some of the first you'd pick.
It was no fluke that under Thomas and Lyon that we had great leaders in the club...Hayes, Ball, Hamill, Harvey, Riewoldt...I am sure if the system was allowed to continue, you could have added Dal Santo, Goddard, McEvoy, etc to the list.
We needed to go back to the rotating captain model after Riewoldt relinquished the captancy and handed it over to Geary.
None of the players in the leadership group scream leader to me...other than they lead by example...But that is but one quality of a leader.
I wonder if we have a program for our leadership group that helps them become better leaders?

Being a leader is not a 'job' or a 'role', it's not about seniority. It's in everything you do.

Players should be enjoying themselves, feeling well prepared or confident and onfield player leadership give the appearance of committed performance.
It looks like our leadership group seem to principally lead by example only, and coaches who work from the bench give the impression they are 100% invested in winning the game at hand.

If we rely on the coaches for everything on game day, we will go nowhere.
Clearly there are some gaps here especially around our ability to close out tight ones.
No wonder Ross is complaining about the number of runner messages.
