Re: Pick 3 in the draft
Getting the picks is only 1 part of rebuilding
Getting the selection right is part 2
Developing them correctly is part 4
Having the right leadership and culture around them - part 4
We got it very right in 2000-2002
GT should take a lot of credit for that
We got it very wrong 2012-2014
Elshaug and Pelchen couldn’t have fkd that up anymore if they tried

Re: Pick 3 in the draft
We are not getting McKay style compo for Battle.
Furthermore , you watch the AFL rules change on compo as the big clubs pit the heat on the AFL . They want the good players from the bottom clubs as FA , but they also want access to the top end draft picks so shunting them back in the order doesn’t suit their agenda,
FA compo picks will soon become meaningless.

X was unlucky. Could have been a gun if he hadn’t also been a soft tissue injury nightmare.
The only thing which stopped us from nailing it was taking Ball over Judd.

I wish I had your optimism but he is almost gone already according to my source.

Re: Pick 3 in the draft
Even the Ball pick was a little unlucky. His output before he was hampered by injuries (playing through osteitis pubis was the final straw really) far exceeded what came after, and even that was that of very good player.SydneySainter wrote: ↑Wed 22 May 2024 10:36pmAgreed re: the GT rebuild.B.M wrote: ↑Wed 22 May 2024 7:17pm Getting the picks is only 1 part of rebuilding

Re: Pick 3 in the draft
There are a few reasons we didn’t make it to Grand Finals in 2004 and 2005 and a few players who couldn’t contribute when it mattered… but Luke wasn’t one of thoseSydneySainter wrote: ↑Wed 22 May 2024 10:36pmAgreed re: the GT rebuild.B.M wrote: ↑Wed 22 May 2024 7:17pm Getting the picks is only 1 part of rebuilding

We should have been on our way to a Grand Final in 2004 when Bally kicked a goal late in the game against Port before Wanganeen broke our hearts
Bally was 2nd in the Trevor Barker medal in 2004 and club champion and All Australian in 2005.
Stevie Baker’s old man though…I’ll concede on….along with 100’s of nuff nuffs who didn’t understand the consequences of changing our momentum

Re: Pick 3 in the draft
I agree that pre-OP, Ball was an A-grade midfielder.
However, Judd was next level and already arguably the best player in the game.
I’m not saying taking Ball was necessarily a bad decision, but as much as hindsight is a wonderful thing, taking Judd was the difference from that being a very good draft era to us “nailing” it.

Concerning that Battle hasn’t signed by now.

Re: Pick 3 in the draft
2001 we had a very good draft - no doubt
But not just Ball over Judd at Pick 2
Pick 5
Clarke over Bartel
Pick 13
Dal Santo - Nailed
Pick 21
Maguire over Steve Johnson
Pick 37
Montagna - Nailed
Pick 49
Josh Houlihan over Dane Swan
Later in the draft
Adam Schneider
Brian Lake

What about second rounders - which is what we will get for Battle
Dunstan, Hugh Goddard, McKenzie, Long
