Good kicks taking short kicks

Post: # 2060960Post CURLY »

Makes no sense having great penetrating kicks of the footy such as NWM Bonner and Sinclair take kick outs and kick it 15 meters.

Any player on the ground could take these kicks and surely can't be part of the structure going forward.

I agree. We aren't the only team doing it, but I don't understand why we let teams always do a short kick to a pocket then they work it up the ground. OK we have forced them wide but why not put pressure on them right from the start. A long kick out (not to the opposing ruckman) if not marked force it to ground and get it in the forward line.

πŸ’―πŸ’―πŸ’―

I will draw the ire of fanbois, but WILKIE.
Little dinky 25m kicks to a guy.
17 other clubs will send it 45m away at least, to a guy on his own.
Wilkie does the 'safe' predictable thing and 17 clubs know this and set up easily.

Reminds me of Geary sitting 25m away from goal square getting a cheap mark. Then did nothing with it

I'm always bemused by the way we take so long to bring the ball in from a kick out, often just to kick it 15m. Yet our opponents almost always bring it straight in, often with kicks of 30-50m.

Short kicks from the goal square drive me spare. Surely Corey Enright can set structures in place to deal with long kick-ins.

Seeing the opposition get gift goals regularly from missed short kicks from the goal square are game killers.

Watched a game a few days ago, the kick-in went a long way towards the wing to 2 guys who were well in the clear, as most players had moved over to the corridor and the opposite wing.
We don't do that for some reason.
Beggars belief

And now when you can almost run to the 50m line before kicking it anyway.

The idea of this is that by allowing the team kicking in to kick to the pocket, the team defending only has to defend half the ground. The more central the kick-in, the harder it is to defend as it spreads the zone and makes more gaps appear. Some teams will "give" the opposition an easy kick to the pocket but this then makes the next kick much harder. The challenge with this is that the second kick has to be defended well.

Need to move the zone with your first or second kick.

The answer to this is because the opposition isn't giving us the kicks we want. Our better kicks are taking them because a good team set up well isnt going to give us a huge window to hit our target so you want your best kicks on it. The issue is when the opposing team isn't giving us option 1, then option 2 is the short kick to the pocket, which the opposition gives up because they are more focused on stopping the long launch and as mentioned above means they only need to defend half the ground, or the 30m run out and launch down the line because in both cases a launch to a massive pack from there gets the ball 60+ away from goal in the event of a turnover. No-one would would really want the launch to be from around the goal square to a pack because then any turnover is much closer to being within range for a quick shot.

Going back a generation, a side had a full back who could distance

They also had a competition class ruckman

The tactic was to let the ruck run to a back pocket with no pressure, the kick out short to him then man up the full back

Worked a treat - every time we played them

Ditto the way opposition did not man up on Geary 25 from the goal square

The current dinky kick to the pocket and then back across to the other pocket and then short to the boundary (still inside 50) and then long down the line .... all at turtle pace ..... isn't working .... wake up coaches!!!

For the love of God .... try something else ... anything else

2 decades ago, #7 Cats player Ben Graham.
NAS and Sincs are supposed to be our Exocet cruise missiles that can hit a target through a bathroom window.
Well, watch how many times these 2 guys kick 30m sideways.

Geary in the pocket? Teams gave us that freeby because they didn't value his precision (with good reason)

Now we just get Wilkie do a 30m kick that gets marked, then 2 kicks later, comes back with interest πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

As much as I would like to see quicker ball movement, it has a strategy behind it (until the dump down the line), with the purpose being to move around the opposition zone to try and find holes as your players move through it. You see it a lot in soccer, with ball dominant teams shifting the ball back and forth between defenders in the middle of the pitch to try to open up space to attack. It is boring to watch there too.

If it wasn't so boring to watch, I would almost prefer them to switch it back and forth more times, especially earlier in a game, if only to try to run the opposition a few extra kms and tire them out.

Freo controlled the centre corridor, and our guys just kept playing into their hands- so bloody obvious, yet Lyon didn't change anything around..pretty disheartening.
