Zebras v Tigers

Post: # 2060298Post King Max »

Late in 2nd quarter. Zebras leading 47-22.

Players are wearing different numbers.
Crouch 4
Byrnes 23
Allison 29

Confusing!

And it’s live on Channel 7.

Flicked it on after halftime again. Turned into a bit of a wet scrap.

Hastie a couple of bad mistakes down back and was lucky not to cough up goals. Campbell taps looking good, Crouch extracting well, and Moose Heath with 2 goals.

3/4 time
Sandy 13.9.87 to Tigers 3.6.24

Sandy far and away the better team in a scrappy wet game. A lot of chances at goal went skidding out of bounds or missed.

Garcia looking good, Crouch dominating. Keeler playing well driving out of the backline and good defensively. Byrnes did some nice evasive things. Allison 3 goals including a nice snap that quarter. Clark body language looks poor to my eyes, doesn’t seem to be enjoying footy or playing at this level very much or so it seems.

Garcia is going to be the contested mid ball winner we’ve been dying for

From short bit I saw, Crouch is a certainty to come back in next week to replace either Phillipou or Collard.
Leave Garcia there for another week or two.
Hayes, or Membrey comes back next week.

Think of me long enough to make a memory.

Final score
Sandy 20.14.134 to Tigers 3.6.24

Hard to know how much to read into that vs a very poor and depleted Tigers side, but some good signs from the AFL players.

Garcia BOG from what I saw, classy kick, wins his own football in the clinches, going to be very good for us. If Pou earnt his spot back in the midfield after last week’s VFL performance then Garcia certainly has here too.

Crouch good return. Seemed on managed minutes and looked to be hobbling a bit or maybe limited by the knee strapping. Won plenty of contested ball and he suited the conditions.

Clark a bit better after I posted above. Did a few nice things at times, sloppy at others as many were. Not convinced he’s banging down the door for selection or would improve our fortunes at AFL level at the minute.

O’Connell I thought had some nice patches off the backline. We seem to have racked up quite a few of these similar sort of HB drivers but he’s shown enough as a prospect to keep on so far.

Keeler was great also driving off HB. Good aerially and rarely beaten defensively. Didn’t see him late so maybe managed and hopefully not another injury.

Allison 5 goals against a very poor backline but presented well. Similar Hayes and Heath, all presented well and delivery inside 50 was pretty reasonable for them I thought, especially in contrast to the AFL side. Heath could have kicked another two in the last but sprayed them and wasn’t happy about it.

Campbell dominant ruck performance against a non ruckman opponent for most of the day I think.

Hotton, Hastie, McLennan less noticed but got in the mix a bit more as the game went on

Byrnes meh, still a bit of a butcher by foot but pacey and evasiveness are his qualities and he uses them ok.

Cordy fine, but ball barely went down there. Swung forward in the last and kicked a goal.

Only watched the 2nd half, a lot to like from a Saints perspective.

Garcia looks all class, hard to understand why he was dropped.

Couch and Hunter Clark also looked good.

Allison kicked 5, and Keeler looked good. Keeler might be good, he moves with a lot of poise for a tall guy.

Went to the game

Blustery and occasionally drizzling

Against an inferior AFL reserves side (which happens if you have your own reserves team and injury hits!)

It was an easy kill

Most players got their lick of the ice cream - so take the result and numbers with a grain of salt

Matt Allison probably played his best game since being at StK
Ditto Ollie Hotton
Ditto Max Heath - really good game from moose - close to BOG
Tom Campbell was at his VFL beast mode best
McConnell showed a bit here and there
McLennan has nice dukes for a 188 but is a poor man’s Wilkie
Hayes - a gun at this level
Crouch - half fit - above VFL by two levels
Clark played well, looks slow at times
Garcia very classy and quick - will make the grade
Hastie the same quick, evasive and good skills
Cordy very solid
No Schoenmaker- not sure the issue?

Love seeing the kids dominate at the lower level

That’s what should be happening

Just shows how out of touch our match committee is
Could have left Pou in for another week, let him pick 20+ in the midfield and watch his confidence soar.
Instead, we crush his confidence by playing him when he is down on confidence and not ready .

We didn’t crush Phillipou’s confidence. Lyon did when he picked the kid. He admitted at yesterday’s press conference that Matteas wanted to stay in the reserves for a while, but wooden-eared Lyon wouldn’t listen.

It's a learning process for Pou ... he will be better for it

So we win by 110pts ..... and some still are trying to find fault

Tough crowd

Does Allison get a game ahead of Sharman on that effort?

You'd think we want to give him a chance this season to earn himself a contract extension.

Hotton in a similar boat.

Big difference between wanted and happy to stay in reserves

Pou was happy to stay there if selection committee went that way

I think both players will be cut at seasons end unless of coarse Allison keeps delivering consistently from this point but I'd say the coaches have seen enough of Sharman to know he's not going to make it at AFL level.

I think we'll see Hayes and Caminiti be the regulars .

Watched on TV and before Richmond became a scene out of MASH in the second half:

- Clark, crouch and Garcia all were a level above this
- Allisson had a day out. back it up for 2 weeks before consider senior selection . Emergency as a carrot perhaps
- Heath was solid again at the level. Still learning clearly. Did well once Naismith and Ryan went off and was against a small backline
- Hayes moved well. Perhaps stiff to be dropped after good game 1 and poor game 2
- Keeler and Garcia looked ok but not yet ready

At least there seems to be a system to what they are teaching in regard to position, such as heath at FF as to play AFL you cannot just be a ruck you need at least some skill in another aspcect
