My view is that you build sides from defence

So there is your answer from me

Yes, we also need support for Marshall and for King but the question is where are the options across the competition

And mids - well, we have started with Windhager, potentially Owens and with Wilson and Henry (noting Sinclair as an option also)

We went after DeGoey - and if we do go after a mid he needs to be of that quality at least so again where are the options

You start where you can start

And I would note Melbourne’s recruiting of May and Lever and their importance to Melbourne
We were rated no 1 defence last year and sit 6th in pts against this year ... I think Carlisle was well and truly replaced

Defence currently isnt our issue
Spot on. Did any tall forwards kick a goal against us on the weekend? Answer is no …they didn’t.

Meek kicked one when Hayes thought he'd take a dive and earn a free kick. Umpire didn’t get sucked in

Meek was their number 1 ruck all day, so our defenders did their job. Same with the week prior against North

Carlisle used to run around loose in the backline while Nathan Brown, Josh Bruce and Wilkie used to be the defenders. Battle was essentially doing the intercept marking since 2021 and he’s a better defender. Howard is also a better defender than Carlisle.

Bizarre.

Our defence is the best part of our list. We’ve even got done young defenders with a bit of potential: Keeler, Schornmaker, O’Connell.

Keeping Battle is surely the main priority ATM.

Not going to leave Carlton for us as long as his @rse points to the ground.

Fine by me if we up his price and stretch Carlton’s salary cap.

Tall defenders are not our pressing issue.

Midfielders and more of them please.

Like most others I wonder why Owens is not tried as a mid, there must be a reason.

Let's put this Owens to the midfield stuff to rest- he is not a midfielder at AFL level and never will be. He is currently an out of form forward

Can’t see him leaving Carlton to come to us.
On one of the tv shows someone said “ Saints aren’t playing finals next year why would McCluggage go there?”
Another show comment “ McKay has tightened up bombers backline and at the time of trade we questioned how much they were paying but has been worth it.
Food for thought.

You may be correct or maybe not.

I think he has far more mid upside than Phillipou, and the club has given him time in there.

I’d like to see him given an opportunity given how anverage and pedestrian our current group is.

Offload Howard’s 700k

Net 900k on Weitering. Where do we sign!?

He is an UFA at the end of next year when he'll be 28.
Carlton are not going to let him go when they're contending.
And we shouldn't be chasing him if it's going to cost us high draft picks.

So he’s a RFA this offseason, therefore if he accepts an off Carlton can match it or take the compensation pick.

That's not how it works.
He's contracted to the end of 2025 at which time he becomes a free agent.
His restricted/unrestricted status is determined by where he sits in salary related to other players at Carlton.
He'd be unrestricted because they have Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, McKay, and Curnow. Not sure what they're paying Saad also.

The only way to get him at the end of the season is via trade. And he wouldn't come cheap.

He is under contract until next year, only way to leave Carlton this year is by trade, which would not be happening.

We need elite mids.

Mids mids mids mids.

All premiership teams need an elite midfield.

An elite midfield can cover for / lift a poorer offence / defence.

It's not difficult to work out!

Scallop

With their injury list, who constituted the Hawthorn attack?

Noting Hawthorn won the game by only 5 points

So that is one game against a lower ranking Club

And what happened when we played the Western Bulldogs, a team with variable form

The challenging sides do not rely on one KPP sized player in their attacking 6

We have the very competent Howard at 199cm but absent the weight of May then Battle (193cm) then Wilkie (191cm), both midfield size

Yes, they perform most admirably but, given another KPP sized (and class) defender can Battle and Wilkie become more proactive not matched against players of greater size and at least equal ability?

Then you get to our need to push Marshall back - so you cause problems for other sides by Marshall pushing forward

Having contributed that, the deployment of Keeler is of interest and given what he has shown over recent weeks no doubt his name is being mentioned - along with Schoenmaker who missed with concussion last week (and this?)

We have cap space available so surely the strategy is to target what we need at the top end. One of those things is a top 5 defender in the league. Howard is not that. Do i think he will come NO , but will it mean Carlton will need to overpay to keep him, YES.
Similar for McCluggae which then weakens the ability of others. My thinking is the longer game - LDU is who they have targeted, if they get either of the other 2 bonus, but if both have to overpay to keep the others that is 2 top 8 options removed from the equation. GWS already near the top of cap too, Syd likely to lose Haywood as cant afford him, so method to the madness

It's all smoke and mirrors. I think Weitering is very slow. It's a good kick up the arse for Doogs. Maybe Doogs will ask for a pay rise. That's the natural thing to do.

Is the offer $1.5m over multiple years - or is it front ended to prise him out of Carlton?

Unless they are a consistent match winner in their prime

The cynic in me suggests that this is another classic case of a player manager whispering to gullible media that his gun player is slated to go to another team, done entirely to jack up his new salary when his contract is up for renewal.

Like the supposed Battle/Windhager BS rumour, meaningless nonsense, especially at this stage of the season.

"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving.
