They took Connor Rozee at pick 5 and Zac Butters with pick 12
Both have been All Australian and Rozee Is Port Adelaide's captain.
St Kilda took Max King at pick 4 and Gold Coast Ben King at pick 6.
St Kilda did not learn from the 2014 draft chasing after the allusive super star full forward.
School boy full forward reputation's get crushed when they play against men just as tall and stronger than them.
St Kilda has failed to get value for pick 3 in 2013 (Jack Billings), pick 1 in 2014 Paddy McCartin, and pick 4 in 2018 (Max King)
That's 3 All Australian selections fluffed.
They don't understand, there is only one Tony Lockett and he was zoned to St Kilda not drafted.
Swap our recruiters with just about anyone on this forum and we'd have sustained success.

Re: King ...out of form or
The thing is a skinny, lanky key position forward or ruckman, etc... takes years to develop/reach their peak, and might eventually get there ... but it is never a given. Whereas a Rozee, Butterrs , Darcy Wilson etc.. are ready to hit the ground running from the word go.

Re: King ...out of form or
Billings is not a midfielder. Was never considered one.
We have tended to draft the best tall forward in the draft, or worse stll, even a half forward flanker (Billings was not even a key position forward) and have been happy to overlook obvious midfield talent to get one .... Petracca, Rozee, Butterrs, De Goey, The Bont (even though his cousin played for us and knew about his potential) etc....

Rozee was a half forward also and has now pushed into the mid. We drafted the best available talent.samoht wrote: ↑Mon 06 May 2024 10:11am Billings is not a midfielder. Was never considered one.

You mean the best available tall talent (that was the focus of our tunnel-visioned recruiters).

If you read my comments Teflon I'm not advocating moving King on interstate, merely saying that this could be an option that he might choose if he believes the intense focus about expectations from supporters and media is too hot to handle.Teflon wrote: ↑Sun 05 May 2024 7:02pmWowSanctorum wrote: ↑Sun 05 May 2024 1:44pm "Looks like Tarzan but playes like Jane" is appropriate for Max King.
In the past 2 games he's played there have been at least 2 occasions when he was positioned to take a set shot from the 50m arc - on each occasion he betrayed his cronic lack of confidence by instead of kicking for goal (certainly giveable) layed off a short pass to a team mate which failed to reach his target, was intercepted and turned over.
This clearly suggests that Max needs some serious counseling to deal with the mental side of his game, because in the past he has demonstrated that he is more than capable of nailing set shots for goal from a long way out.
There's no quick fix for this problem and he is not the only top draft pick to crumble under the immense pressure of high expectations by the media and supporters; it's also possible that, as with Tim Membrey, he has stuff going on outside of footy that contributes to this state of mind.
It's far too soon to talk about moving him on, although playing for another team (interstate especially) might help him to make a fresh start.
23 hasn’t even hit peak
Has had constant interruptions
We are discussing moving him on interstate?
Tough crowd
Some players find it extremely difficult dealing with the intense pressure of being in the spotlight in elite sporting contests and Max King, more than most, has had that focus on him incessantly from day one.
I know that at 23 he has yet to fully reach his potential, but there is a real concern that his lack of confidence, rather than his talent, when declining to take a set shot for goal betrays his emotional vulnerabilities.

I feel like that a form slump is what Max needs to break the shackles of expectation.
Once he no longer feels the teams weight on his shoulder he can be freed to just play good footy.

It's a team game and all the players have a weight on their shoulders to perform, not just Max. We can't wait for players to have their magic moment when it suits them.

He needs to get on the fkn move instead of being a stationary target
Too easy to move off the ball and body spoil
His Brother has NO problem leading and kicking goals
He needs a roast

Re: King ...out of form or
He also needs better delivery. Despite a quiet game, and the usual one and a half opponents, King managed to get a bit of space due to a lead 6 times in the forward line, and once on the wing. How many of the resultant passes to him went to his advantage? None.
He also was in an advantageous position one on one in the goal square with the ball coming to his advantage, but he didn't launch at the ball. His mistake.
Yes, he needs to improve, but a bit more cohesion in forward delivery is needed as well. I would hate to be the No 1 target forward, don't get a lot of support from the umps either. Even the best of the lot, Jeremy Cameron, has quiet and frustrating games like vs Demons, also he started on a wing to confuse May/Lever and take some pressure off, wandering all over the ground most of the game, even kicking out. He has the ability to do that, but wasn't in the game much.

Why don’t you just come out and say it and stop hiding behind “he could/maybe consider his options”Sanctorum wrote: ↑Mon 06 May 2024 12:30pmIf you read my comments Teflon I'm not advocating moving King on interstate, merely saying that this could be an option that he might choose if he believes the intense focus about expectations from supporters and media is too hot to handle.Teflon wrote: ↑Sun 05 May 2024 7:02pmWowSanctorum wrote: ↑Sun 05 May 2024 1:44pm "Looks like Tarzan but playes like Jane" is appropriate for Max King.

I'm not comparing them. Cameron is a gun, and will always be more mobile than King.
Also different teams, different tactics, one forward line organised and efficient, the other still a work in progress.

How did you rate Kings effort?
Not game, but his effort
He was flogged by Aiden Corr who is the subject of ridicule by North Supporters
King was unacceptable -
By the way - King is turning 24, he’s been in the system 6 seasons!
He is fkn in his prime
Cameron is a veteran. And would run rings around King
Hawkins at the same age
62 goal season
And was a 2 time premiership player

Why isn’t Max more mobile?
Over 100 he’d be in the top 3 at stk
It’s his choice to not do any high intensity running
I was always told as a forward - don’t jog around - go from being stationary or walking to high end - and do it often - Ala Nick Reiwoldt- Even Fraser. A forward who jogs is easy to defend.

You can’t have been…
I was and this is how I rated Kings game as another on BF eloquently put it:
****
Was at the game yesterday and watched King very closely off the ball.
I’ve watched the replay this morning and understand the criticism of him - looked really bad on tv. And probably at the game if just watching the game as normal not off the ball.
The treatment of King off the ball was the worst I’ve seen in a game. At times, King looked ‘uncompetitive’ because he would go to start a lead and we would kick it in his direction, but as he went to take off he would be blatantly held around the waist and pulled back, ‘slingshotting’ Corr to the front of the contest and making King look awful. His jumper was constantly held and the arms around were ridiculous.
When North had time to clog, two opponents would do this to King. One would have eyes off the ball and block him front on as he went to take off, while the other held around the waist.
I don’t want to see bulls*** frees paid resulting in goals when there’s barely a hold and hear the commentators say ‘arms around will always be a cue for a free kick’ again. They pluck them out but miss 1,000 other arms around.
The 4 umpires are meant to be able to spot the off the ball frees, the ones happening a kick away from play. What happened yesterday was cheating and it simply didn’t get stamped out.
Granted, King got very frustrated and will need to learn to compete through the treatment. But I promise you all having watched it closely, the treatment was disgraceful and didn’t give him the chance to run and jump and compete. Could’ve had 6 goals if officiated correctly.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we contact AFL House quietly during the week.
Well done Hayes for taking advantage of the extra space this all created.
Wilson was extraordinary. Looking forward to his career.

Here’s another arm chair….have a read
It was very evident at the game. I thought he could have had a handful of shots on goal through free kicks. Some of the umpires non calls last night were the worst I’ve seen, does holding the ball still exist?

He got one charity free
He is 8cm taller than Corr and was out pointed

His body language was pathetic- he fkn sooked!!!
His effort was deplorable- did not work hard at any point!
As I said - so easy to defend - even Aidan Corr (a D Grade defender) made him look ordinary
