Re: Owens
Seb has had a pretty good career yeah?
200 games
Captained an AFL club
Won two B&Fs (runner up in another)
A prestigious SS MVP award
AA squad of 40
Just weeks ago he was our best player in a game.
Anyone would be ok with that career. It’s why he’s got my respect! He has credits
Owens has had 1 top 5 B&F finish
Averages 1 goal per game as a forward
He has a while to go before he he earns the same amount of credits

Re: Owens
So you get a game based on credits in the bank now
Dating back how far?
There is an old saying that you are only ever as good as your last performance
Owens - and others - are the future of the Club
Ross is in the twilight of his career - relying on credits including B&F’s in years where we were pitiful because we took our eye off the future compounding the loss of players who took us to successive Grand Finals
And when we introduced kids they had no support around them - they were numero uno not support acts
As I put elsewhere we need to invest in these kids to develop our core allowing us to add to that core
The sides which win premierships contest year after year - and they have an experienced core of talent they can add to
Witness Geelong

Re: Owens
Seb is a servent and hence has earnt some credits. I'll give him that. But seriously, if we had midfield talent he would be long gone by now . What your stats don't show is the games when we needed a senior midfielder to stand up Seb has never consistently been that guy. Its not Seb's fault that we have not been able to manage our list in a way that he has never been more than a fringe player because our recruitment has sucked. You crap on about not accepting mediocrity but your Seb worship is classic mediocrity! How many more 200+ game midfielders who have never really been match winners or star players has there been?B.M wrote: ↑Tue 30 Apr 2024 10:10pm Seb has had a pretty good career yeah?

Yes a servent, but would not have lasted 5 seasons at Collingwood or Geelong. Owens has potential and I'm more excited by his potential and what he can offer the club than I ever was by Seb. I thank Seb for his service but you need to stop pretending he is anything more than a below average midfielder.

Re: Owens
Pitiful?
The season he won his first B&F we won 12 games. And he made the AA squad.
Trevor Barker won his 2 B&Fs In wooden spoon seasons- were they worthless? I don’t think so, you still have to play well, against AFL opponents
Greg Burns the same. Was he no good?
His credits go as far back as a few games ago where he was voted by us as our best player.

Re: Owens
If Seb Ross keeps playing like he has in the last 2 weeks he won't be on the list next year. Credits in the bank will evaporate like the US dollar.

Re: Owens
We need to find an elite midfielder and we need to find out if Owens is it. Concerns over his tank can be the only explanation why he’s not in the starting midfield.

Re: Owens
Ross has tried Zak, Stocker, Battle and the younger guys -Garcia, Hastie, Pou, Wilson- but he sticks to his regulars.
They have strict instruction. The RTB game plan is:
If you can tag, you start in the middle at centre bounce... and you generally play as a mid all day
I don't have the stats but I bet the guys with the most centre bounce attendances are Sebby, Steeley and Windy.
Owens is a guy too focussed on winning his own ball ( because...that's what he does ) and that just doesn't fit in with the program
I understand that we need to learn to be a good defensive unit before we work on our attack, but at some stage there needs to be a balance. More emphasis on getting first hands on the footy, effecient ball use, more inside 50's and scoring

Re: Owens
Can not go forward and can not go back because he can not mark the ball overhead
So restricted to tagging roles in the midfield
Hence the number of goals he has kicked over his career
A GOP who has achieved above expectations to reach 200 games
But the pressure will come on him with the players about to resume

Re: Owens
Sounds like exactly what our midfield needs. Let the opposition worry about what we are doing for a change, rather than the reverse.Scollop wrote: ↑Wed 01 May 2024 5:44pmOwens is a guy too focussed on winning his own ball ( because...that's what he does )

Re: Owens
At his best
A bit better than a gop
You don’t get multiple best on grounds - in AFL games
If you’re an ordinary footballer
Failure to acknowledge his achievements- shows ignorance
And in all honesty- disrespect

Re: Owens
Seb this season
10 - subbed out (poor game)
22 - solid game
28 - Best player
25 - good game
17 - average game (although 9 tackles)
23 - reasonable game
14 - poor game
So yeah, not as good as his prime. But hardly shocking
Average 20 possessions
Average 5 tackles
Average 4 clearances
He’s a 2nd string mid now - you’d take that
