Hmmm it really wouldn’t be a good for the club to recruit Thomas now:

I fkn hate footy taking a stand on issues it has fk all to do with

Footy is two hours a week you get to forget life’s troubles and barrack for you team

Not get social issues rammed down you r throat

I am a former serviceman who served in the gulf in 92

I even hate the fact that moron Collingwood fans think their club is somehow significant on ANZAC day.

The AFL's "stand" on social issues is not genuine it's marketing think.
Great concern for mental health, other medical causes, the vulnerable - sponsored by big betting. Greenwashing a huge social evil.
The Anzac ceremonies are very moving however the Collingwood v Essendon "tradition " is a contrived blockbuster; should be shared, if equity is a serious justice value. Transparent greed is the driver of the AFL.

St Dillon and Sister Laura are in thrall of $ broadcasters and betting industry not charitable works to mould society. They just peddle that snake oil.

A sport that doesn’t exist in a bubble. Otherwise you are saying players can have Carte Blanche to do whatever they want, seeing societal issues have no impact on the outcome of sports.

Wasn’t we frustrated recently for having such games

Pride Game etc

Or was that just excuses for losses?!

Didn’t RTB when he was allude to the fact we need to prioritise winning football rather than being distracted by side issues??

Bollocks. Are all people in society responsible for stepping up and reducing cruelty to animals? After all, it's human beings that inflict cruelty on domesticated animals!

The fact is that in the 12 months ending June 30 last year, 70% of all murder victims in Australia were male. And that percentage is consistent over many years, so why is it that only female victims are newsworthy? Approximately 33% of all victims of domestic violence are male, why are we only interested in gendered violence against women? Across society in general, males are about 4 times more likely than females to be a victim of violence, so why is it only violence against females that we are concerned about - why is that so much more deserving of attention?

I am pretty happy for sport to play a role in social education generally, but given there is a known correlation between a team losing and their supporters engaging in a domestic violence incident (eg this was the first study I found on google which finds a 10% increase in incidents after a loss where the team was favourite to win, with the rate increasing after important matches https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3712874/), this is probably one of the more relevant issues to educate about.

Wild that DV could be considered a politcal/social issue that people take sides on rather than just all agreeing it is bad, and actually argue that a bare minimum action could be something we shouldn't do, but I guess that is just what society is now.

The government has caused financial distress through its inept policies which is putting a lot of pressure on households and causing all sorts of problems for families like domestic violence. But the government wants us to point the finger at other men.

Which government?

The one led by Albo that's been there for a tick over a year or the ones who were in power for the last decade plus?

The big Swinging Dick club was all about making women in the Liberal party feel safe and valued... wasn't it?

I am definitely on the left / liberal / progressive side of this debate.
But figures like these (assuming they're true) I think absolutely need to be understood and taken into account if we're going to get a real line of perspective on the whole issue.

The world is a lot more complex than all the simple narratives put together.
Ideals of justice, though, need to be put simply to cut through and inspire.
Let's not be so rigid that we form impenetrable battlelines.

I don't entirely trust figures like these coming from what I imagine are probably "anti-woke" channels.
Dis Believer, would you like to send me/us an official source for them?
Whatever they actually are, they require consideration.

When a men fight one of them sometimes dies. When men fight women, guess who dies. How many of your 70% of male murder victims were killed by women?

Are you still banging on about the Morrison Government?

The RBA has been working with one hand tied behind its back because of the CURRENT government’s idiotic policies which means higher interest rates for longer which along with inflation is causing a cost of living crisis and is killing many households. They have also caused a massive rental crisis in pockets of the country.

Politicians are incapable of solving complex problems; they either create them or exacerbate them. It’s their raison detre.

Try and stay objective.

I'm with BM on this one,
Sport is one of our last bastions of escapism from all the terrible and serious intense circumstances going on around us.
Let's leave those things for govts , news outlets and other involved groups to allow the rest of us a few minutes of distraction.
I am fully behind the abolition of violence to women and will support it to the hilt outside of my involvement with sport.

When someone beats their partner because they're in a foul mood after their team loses, I think that means sport has already been brought into it.

Not everyone has the luxury of 'escapism' or to 'forget life's troubles'

Agree, this stance of 'make footy only about footy' is just not possible. Once it became a commercial product and has a governing body, it doesn't exist in a bubble to the rest of society. You can't un-ring that bell and say we will take broadcasting and sponsorship money, pay players big money and allow them to take on sponsorships, but we won't comment or take positions on any social issues or causes.

So the list of causes that people want removed from footy is:

- Domestic Violence and violence against women
- LGBT Pride
- Anzac day
- Blue ribbon
- Raising money and awareness for Cancer
- MND
- Mental health

Anything else that needs to go because it isn't about footy solely?

I find it baffling every time that supporters from the club Nicky Winmar played for come out with the "footy shouldn't be political / support societal issues" line.

Truly mindboggling.
