Re: Match thread Saints v Dogs
Embarrassing performance ... that said 4th game in 20 days with 2 interstate trips and a large injury list
But seriously we have some dumb players ... some turnovers were inexcusable
Back to the drawing board and let's hope we start to get some players back

To clarify I wasn’t criticising those two (big fan of both), just highlighting the gulf in (current) talent and experience at many centre bounces tonight.Otiman wrote: ↑Fri 19 Apr 2024 12:06amGarcia and WIndy more than held their own this week.shrodes wrote: ↑Thu 18 Apr 2024 11:26pm Ross said last week that the midfield is spluttering. Well this week the engine conked out.
We were outclassed in there. At one point it was Garcia, Windy, Jones vs Bont, Macrae, Treloar. Just another class above our troops. No quick fixes here I think except getting some blokes back and getting more experience into these kids and hoping they come on quick
Jones, Steele and Ross all below their best.

Re: Match thread Saints v Dogs
I dispute the point re Ryder, from a clearance perspective and around the ground we have been a markedly better team with Rowan the sole ruckman. Before tonight we were the 4th best clearance team in the league and what Marshall has brought to the table this year has been immense.Bruce G McAbee wrote: ↑Thu 18 Apr 2024 10:41pm Another thing we have known is that we needed a replacement for Paddy Ryder and we knew that for a couple of years and we did nothing.
Speaking of midfielder, gee do you think not drafting Petracca with our number 1 pick hasn't bit us badly.

Do you reckon the Dogs would swap Darcy or JU-H for King and Pou (steak knives)
Darcy looks way better than King after 11 games and has footy smarts which King sadly lacks.

Darcy has to be one of the tallest players I have ever seen on an AFL field I’ll say that much. He was a good head taller than battle and is only 20. Scary.

Re: Match thread Saints v Dogs
I’d be the last to defend umpires. One of their faults is that when one team is so dominant they jump on a winner. We were smashed early and hardly fired a shot in the first quarter and they decided that was how the game was going to beTeflon wrote: ↑Thu 18 Apr 2024 11:52pmWe were but let’s not let those pathetic excuses for umpires off when it mattered…
Dogs constantly caught with ball …
Dogs throwing the ball????
Saints forwards had no back apparently it was ok to charge into it
Garcia head ripped….
Umps were truly shiithouse and the AFL have not improved them in 15 years
NOT the reason we lost but let’s not pretend they played no part

Re: Match thread Saints v Dogs
Only two players played with genuine energy and hard running and they were Hill and Windhager. We know Hill is an aerobic freak and Windhager had a rest last week. I don't think it's a coincidence. Our scheduling in the past three weeks had a lot to do with that loss.
The other is the fact that we have Wood, Henry, Dow, Clark, Webster, Crouch, Howard, and King all on the sidelines. Maybe not all of those guys come in, but most would and it would definitely improve us.

Things going to get worse before they get better unfortunately, the rebuild has only begun so we need to buckle in, even the Prez telling us this now so he's obviously expecting rough seas ahead.

What about us rusted on people who pay $4,000 to pay for seats and sponsor a player???axcellence wrote: ↑Thu 18 Apr 2024 9:15pm I feel for the saints fan who bought tickets or went to the match.

Well… I feel for all of you. I stopped being a member during Richo’s reign. I can’t go to another team, yet unwilling to spend any more money. I watch it on tv sometimes.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Fri 19 Apr 2024 9:10amWhat about us rusted on people who pay $4,000 to pay for seats and sponsor a player???axcellence wrote: ↑Thu 18 Apr 2024 9:15pm I feel for the saints fan who bought tickets or went to the match.

Re: Match thread Saints v Dogs
I didn't go because it was Thursday night and with an hour drive home after the game just makes it too late.
I am actually rather pleased I didn't go now as the performance was truly woeful.
However, there were some good things that came out of the game.
Firstly, maybe people will stop thinking that Lyon is some kind of messiah and realize that he is an average coach, average not terrible, with no plan B when things aren't going his way.
We play the worst brand of football to watch in the competition by a long way.
Our gameplan is so negative that it appears to be based on the opposition having the ball and what we can do to stifle them.
We let our opponents lead us to the ball all the time and when we do get the football we have no idea what to do with it.
Our game is based on manic attack on the player with the ball and high end pressure but to sustain that you need to be supremely fit which as last night showed we are no fitter than any other team.
Our list is critically flawed and we need to go backwards before we can go forwards.
We have to either decide to drop to the bottom of the ladder and try to rebuild through the draft, trading out anyone over 25 with any trade value or just accept mediocrity. We are not a destination club so cannot build through trading and free agency.
