When we do what?
Win the premiership
We have had a lot better list than this one, and not won a flag
This list will NOT contend

Lepers can change their spots; upgraded memberships, merch, sponsorship and donations considered. Not to mention enduring Essendon & Geelong fans on the walk home. Something? Nothing?

Just wondering if the boys are up and about?
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

RTB wasn’t cuddly. The coaches were unbelievably frustrated. Think you will see what you want to see on Sunday - shocking ground however

Re: Tony74
Agreed...We are not even top 4 material...at the moment.
Brisbane, Melbourne, Collingwood, GWS, Sydney, and Carlton all way above us.
We are fighting with Essendon, Bulldogs, Geelong, Port, and Gold Coast for the last two spots in the eight. And we will never progress past the second week.
We need an injection of a very classy clearance midfielder, a mobile tap ruckman, and another tall key defender.
The first need is a no-brainer. The second one allows Marshall to go forward more and take the focus from King. The last one will be to take players like Hawkins, Curnow/McKay, Larkey, Wright, Naughton, Walker, etc...to allow Wilkie and Battle to play the intercept role with more freedom. I am not convinced that Cordy/Howard are the answers.
We will continue to be around the 50% W/L mark until we fill the gaps.

You need a big slice of luck to win a premiership. We lost 3 games in 2009 by a combined total of 19 points. Sometimes the best list doesn't win. A lot of things need to go right.

Re: Tony74
Hey tony74
How do you see the development of Steele's leadership?
He comes across to me (from an outsider's pov) as a captain who embraces all his team mates, both young and old.
I think he's a very positive influence on our young players but I feel like he needs more voice at certain stages in play. Does he get enough support from his leadership group on field?
I think he can grow and develop as a captain and hopefully Lenny and BJ are puting in some time with him.
However... Does he have the burn and desire to be a premiership captain. And one last one: Do you think Steele is as driven as Ross Lyon?

Re: Tony74
Unless we can get a Key Defender from another club we are in strife then, AFL standard Key Defenders over 197cm, in feeder comps, almost don't exist and draft watchers are saying there aren't many Key Position players on offer in the 2024 draft. Melbourne do all right with a 193cm bull at Full Back.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Fri 05 Apr 2024 2:10pmAgreed...We are not even top 4 material...at the moment.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Tony74
Remember when Alex Rance went down with an acl and the media and most footy fans
thought that Richmond were in trouble and couldn't win a flag without him?
Dylan Grimes held down the posiition of FB so well he was an All Australian defender in 2019 and made the squad of 40 three years running - 2018/19/20. He's only 193cm. Dane Rampe goes ok. He's shorter than Cal Wilkie at under 190cm.
Harry Himmelberg is 195cm and you wouldn't call him a bull. He holds down the position ok as well.
We don't need a key defender from another club. From what I've seen of Van Es, I like
Hopefuly he does everything possible to become AFL fit and he gets his body right
James is still a pup. Turns 20 in August this year

At the moment his performances have been ordinary to say the least!

Agreed...But please tell me you're not trying to compare Cordy/Howard with May/Lever!bobmurray wrote: ↑Fri 05 Apr 2024 9:04pm Unless we can get a Key Defender from another club we are in strife then, AFL standard Key Defenders over 197cm, in feeder comps, almost don't exist and draft watchers are saying there aren't many Key Position players on offer in the 2024 draft. Because that is entirely my point.
Our class is a long way off where it needs to be.
I think it underlines the level of coach that Lyon is. He took our injury depleted, class lacking list last season to the finals. That is a big achievement.
Yes, Ratten also got us to a finals series, but 2020 was a different beast with the shorter games, shorter season, hubs, and neutral venues. I also don't recall having as many key forwards out in that season as we did last year. We also had Ryder and Carlisle.

Every team has strengths and deficiencies. Comparing ourselves to the best of every team is the equivalent of body dismorphic disorder.
We focus on our own strengths and improve in the areas we can, which becomes a roll of the dice towards a premiership. More good decisions means more dice.

Re: Tony74
Ratts has gone, and I am not saying he was a good or bad coach, but may have got us back in the finals, Lyon has had a lot of goes at getting a flag, but is in the coodabeen category at the moment. The Fireman wrote: ↑Thu 04 Apr 2024 11:16amso you are saying that Ratts has the same ability of Lyon to get us a flag ?spert wrote: ↑Thu 04 Apr 2024 11:06amDunno- Ratts got us into finals, so has Lyon. He is very good. We are in good hands.
Just need the players to do their bit. Not the reliable stalwarts, the peripherals.
(Do you think they can).
We may not make finals but we will end up with a new group of new young guns, which will give us something from this year.
Ross is a very intelligent man and his analytic approach to the process smacks of professionalism..
His determination for a flag is summed up nicely at the end of the interview.
I personally am confident we have the right man , some on here bag me for it , blind faith etc, that's ok
i've seen many coaches come and go...this one impresses me.
