Re: Kicking at goal
2020 - we kicked the most goals in the comp from 0-15m
With loads of walk in or Joe the gooses
We started the forwards high and Butler and Co just sprinted back to goal on turnover
Opposing sides eventually caught on to that
But it accounted for a large % of goals and why we were so accurate - you don’t miss too many from the goal square.
I don’t mind missing the tough ones - which you arse every now and then
It’s the set shots from 30-40 that should be nailed- we kicked 3-7 from those v Ess

Re: Kicking at goal
People complain about things out of our control, umpiring, MRP, injuries etc and use these as excuses for losses.
The 2 games we lost we kicked 9.14 and 9.15, the game we won we kicked 14.10
Now I’m no million dollar coach, but it’s pretty obvious to me where a lot more time and effort needs to be invested!

Re: Kicking at goal
Didn’t they bring in David Wheadon as goalkicking coach last year or is that done?

Please tell me this is made up re his techniqueNick DalSanto Claus wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2024 8:21pm The rot set in after we hired that corkhead, Ben Dixon. We went from bad to worse under his "tutelage".
Don't forget his best "technique" was to get the players to imagine the best sex they'd ever had, as they were lining up, and visualize their partner in that union standing behind the goals. That then became the target.
Genius! For some unknown reason, our goal-kicking became worse, and Dixhead was given the sack. No other team has adopted this technique, nor has anyone else hired him in that capacity. I wonder why?
Neither side has forgiven the other. Dixhead bags us whenever he can.

I wish I was making it up, saint6709. It has to go down as one of the most embarrassing appointments the club ever made.saint6709 wrote: ↑Tue 02 Apr 2024 6:32pmPlease tell me this is made up regarding his techniqueNick DalSanto Claus wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2024 8:21pm The rot set in after we hired that corkhead, Ben Dixon. Unfortunately, his brilliant "technique", was described in the media of the day. I could scarcely believe it myself when I read about it.
It says something about our desperation in this area. To think, we hired that fool Dixon in the belief that he was a sound kick for goal himself, and reinforced by his set shot goal after the final siren, to beat Carlton.
We fell for the oldest trick in the book. That one who could execute a particular skill must be able to effectively teach that skill to others. Dixon proved that truism wrong.
Furthermore, his performances in the media since he was sacked by the Saints, have only proved what a buffoon he is, who continues to take potshots at us whenever he gets the chance. Good riddance.

Re: Kicking at goal
That’s not a truism
Having a skill has zero to do with coaching it. Coaching is two things
Understanding and communication
If you don’t understand the skill/technique/strategy you can’t coach it
If you can’t communicate your understanding, you can’t coach it
Being a great coach has zero to do with being a great player. That doesn’t mean great players can’t be great coaches, it means it not a pre requisite

Re: Kicking at goal
So we're in furious agreement. Just because you can execute a skill, doesn't mean you can teach it well. Read my post again. I said as much.B.M wrote: ↑Wed 03 Apr 2024 12:32am That’s not a truism

A truism as I used it is a sentence which asserts incomplete truth conditions for a proposition.
Communication and understanding. I think there's a lesson in that for you, BM.

Re: Kicking at goal
Loewe turned a horrendous accuracy into a reliable kick - not sure that he could teach it - maybe the person who turned Loewe's kicking around.

Re: Kicking at goal
Most times when having a shot on goal, the player is knackered after running hard to set up position and/or to outrun an opponent to mark. Should training taking set shots at goal be done after they've done sprints and or endurance training to replicate the feeling they have in games rather than "popping" shots at the start or end of training?

Re: Kicking at goal
Kicking at goal (set shot), should be treated the same as any field kick.
Pick a target (in the crowd); and kick it to them.
You can miskick it 2+ metres either side of goal-centre & still kick a goal.
No need to take your mouth guard out, comb your hair, scratch your nuts, pull up your sock.
They're tired ? bulls***.
Does anyone else stop, take a breath, etc. before they hit their target 40m to 50m up the ground ?
They take too long & think about it too much.
Just kick it straight like (most), field kicks, then you can take your short rest when the umps do their job.
