So who is 2nd ruck if Owens isn’t?
We don’t have one
Marshall needs more of a chop out - he was too tired at the end and it really cost us
I don’t think Ross is going to play Campbell unless as first ruck if Marshall falls over. He’d say not mobile enough and you don’t get enough out of him in other roles when he is not actually rucking.
Sharman has done it before. Has a good leap. Mason Wood has pinch-hit. Caminiti, too. Max King would be superb in the role, but you wouldn’t want to risk him injury wise. I don’t think it matters much so long as you have someone competitive enough to stop the opposition dominating. However, that is not so of the guys at the fall of the ball.
We were poleaxed out of the centre clearances in the second half yesterday. A comprehensive drubbing. Owens could have turned it our way.

9-1 centre clearances against in the second half. Needs something
Someone not something
LIam Henry, Brad Crouch, Mason Wood, Paddy Dow, Hunter Clark
Add just one and St Kilda defeats Essendon.
Just add all 5 and Max King, Dougal Howard (better than Zaine Cordy) & Jack Hayes (ahead of Cooper Sharman also frees Mitchito Owens from 2nd ruck)
The margin goes to 100points.
Only Crouch would regularly attend centre bounces in that group. Dow is still an unknown quantity at the Saints. Maybe he attends centre bounces, maybe he doesn't.
But you add Wood and Clark, and Bonner is surplus to requirements.

Henry attended 9 centre bounces round 1.
Clark's was a regular fixture there last year.
Dow is known as a clearance player.
All reasonable inclusions I that list.

We have a 190cm 90kg bull inside mid
Who for some god knows reason is playing as a quasi key forward
The more he plays the more I'm not sure he's capable of becoming a full time mid, he's looking a bit slow and possibly also lacking some agility to be a hunter at ground level.

We'll persist with the 2nd ruck role until he gets injured then they might wake up to themselves, but I doubt it!!
Unfortunately I think you are right until he gets a serious injury against a 200+cm Ruckman he will stay rucking doesn't matter that it stunts his game and takes away a weapon we have as long as he rucks which is crazy.
What I would do is look at the mid season draft and try and get the best ruckman in Australia out side the AFL I am sure there are some quality players out there he have picked up a few and so have other teams.
In the meantime Caminiti can ruck as well he is a lot bigger then last season and did ok in the ruck against Essendon and at 196cm at least he has a chance and Marshall will play forward when Caminiti in Ruck, which allows Owens to play as a inside mid and utilise him at his greatest advantage to the team.

Do you reckon Phillpou has the outside run and kicking on the run
Most of his possessions are stationary
He gives off a lot of handballs75% of his disposals and takes a couple of marks here and there
But rarely do I see him get the ball on the move and deliver by foot? Ala NWM or Hill or Henry- who are true outside runners
He gets the footy flat footed too often, that's a problem whether he's winning contested ball or first receiver. I see him as a player who can break out of tight spaces and use his feet. BUT he needs to start getting the ball while already on the move.
If I knew the answer to how to get him to that point, I'd be an AFL coach.
So we lack star quality in the midfield and I have been hoping Owens and Windhager can become our version of Dangerfield and Selwood or our Petracca-Oliver or Dusty-Cotchin. Maybe that is a little ambitious, but it’s ok to dream ..,
I saw the match only on TV and was wondering if anyone at the ground could say whether Michito got much of a run through the midfield … or whether it was only as second ruck.
I hear people saying he looks a bit slow, but I’m not worried about that.
Put a ball in front of him and he is explosive over 10-15 metres and he is strong enough and has good enough hands and footy smarts to get a good result most of the time. Yesterday, I think his timing was a bit off, which can make you look slow. Just needs to be in the contest more.
