We don’t have one
Marshall needs more of a chop out - he was too tired at the end and it really cost us
I don’t think Ross is going to play Campbell unless as first ruck if Marshall falls over. He’d say not mobile enough and you don’t get enough out of him in other roles when he is not actually rucking.

Sharman has done it before. Has a good leap. Mason Wood has pinch-hit. Caminiti, too. Max King would be superb in the role, but you wouldn’t want to risk him injury wise. I don’t think it matters much so long as you have someone competitive enough to stop the opposition dominating. However, that is not so of the guys at the fall of the ball.

We were poleaxed out of the centre clearances in the second half yesterday. A comprehensive drubbing. Owens could have turned it our way.

9-1 centre clearances against in the second half. Needs something
Someone not something
LIam Henry, Brad Crouch, Mason Wood, Paddy Dow, Hunter Clark
Add just one and St Kilda defeats Essendon.
Just add all 5 and Max King, Dougal Howard (better than Zaine Cordy) & Jack Hayes (ahead of Cooper Sharman also frees Mitchito Owens from 2nd ruck)
The margin goes to 100points.
Only Crouch would regularly attend centre bounces in that group. Dow is still an unknown quantity at the Saints. Maybe he attends centre bounces, maybe he doesn't.
But you add Wood and Clark, and Bonner is surplus to requirements.

Henry attended 9 centre bounces round 1.
Clark's was a regular fixture there last year.
Dow is known as a clearance player.

All reasonable inclusions I that list.

We have a 190cm 90kg bull inside mid

Who for some god knows reason is playing as a quasi key forward

Multiple people have offered reasons.

You choose to (imo) overstate his capability as a midfielder and ignore those other perspectives- they're not unknown just unheard it would seem.

Might get your wish this week with Windy going out.

The more he plays the more I'm not sure he's capable of becoming a full time mid, he's looking a bit slow and possibly also lacking some agility to be a hunter at ground level.

I agree that Owens should be that midfield bull we have been praying for - not a forward who's goal kicking is not that good.

Think of him as a ground ball winner who needs a tall opponent.

Didn’t Owens have the highest % of ground ball contest wins in the comp last year?

Owens was a revelation in that role last year, was a close second in the rising star - but this year is no good. Just saying

He was third in the rising star - and not close
Finished 21 votes behind Sheezel and 6 behind Ashcroft

He kicked 1.1 goals per game
1.0 contested marks
Averaged 15 disposals and 4 tackles

Let’s not carry on like he was the second coming of Carey

He was an undersized handy key forward and did well considering
Bit like if most other bull mids played as a stay at home forward

The ‘money men’ play in the middle
Or are power forwards

Not 190cm hybrid forwards

We'll persist with the 2nd ruck role until he gets injured then they might wake up to themselves, but I doubt it!!

Unfortunately I think you are right until he gets a serious injury against a 200+cm Ruckman he will stay rucking doesn't matter that it stunts his game and takes away a weapon we have as long as he rucks which is crazy.

What I would do is look at the mid season draft and try and get the best ruckman in Australia out side the AFL I am sure there are some quality players out there he have picked up a few and so have other teams.

In the meantime Caminiti can ruck as well he is a lot bigger then last season and did ok in the ruck against Essendon and at 196cm at least he has a chance and Marshall will play forward when Caminiti in Ruck, which allows Owens to play as a inside mid and utilise him at his greatest advantage to the team.

The part time rucking for 5 mins here and there is not an issue for me - at least it gets him around the footy

It’s the other 95% of the time stuck in front of the ball that is strange

A contested ball beast - waiting in i50 for a kick?!

He should be
60% in midfield
20% forward
20% bench

2nd coming of Carey

I don’t know why I even bother

2nd coming of Carey was tongue in cheek - we do overrate him though.

Imo he would be a weapon as an inside mid - as he was as a junior

I’d have
Steele - Crouch
Windhager - Dow
Owens - Phillipou

Ad inside mids

Owens was made to be an inside mid. It will also help negate any issues of disposal by foot.

I'd have Pou on the outside.

Do you reckon Phillpou has the outside run and kicking on the run

Most of his possessions are stationary

He gives off a lot of handballs75% of his disposals and takes a couple of marks here and there

But rarely do I see him get the ball on the move and deliver by foot? Ala NWM or Hill or Henry- who are true outside runners

So we’re down a few clearance midfielders. Crouch, Dow, Windy all injured or suspended this week.

I hope Ross has a plan

Pou looks slow to me, in almost everything he does...not sure what to make of it...yeah I know he's young.

It doesn't, I was just giving him a palatable excuse.

It's like my other favourite....big men take longer to develop...

He gets the footy flat footed too often, that's a problem whether he's winning contested ball or first receiver. I see him as a player who can break out of tight spaces and use his feet. BUT he needs to start getting the ball while already on the move.

If I knew the answer to how to get him to that point, I'd be an AFL coach.

So we lack star quality in the midfield and I have been hoping Owens and Windhager can become our version of Dangerfield and Selwood or our Petracca-Oliver or Dusty-Cotchin. Maybe that is a little ambitious, but it’s ok to dream ..,

I saw the match only on TV and was wondering if anyone at the ground could say whether Michito got much of a run through the midfield … or whether it was only as second ruck.

I hear people saying he looks a bit slow, but I’m not worried about that.

Put a ball in front of him and he is explosive over 10-15 metres and he is strong enough and has good enough hands and footy smarts to get a good result most of the time. Yesterday, I think his timing was a bit off, which can make you look slow. Just needs to be in the contest more.

Does he not have the tank to play midfield?

Gut feel was that Owens position didn't change this week.

Stats say:
0 centre bounces attended
1 clearance
2 tackles
8 contested possessions

But as a forward, these stats matter more:
1 goal
3 goal assists
3 marks
7 score involvements
