Kicking at goal
Has a Ross Lyon coached team ever been reliable in front of goal
He lost GFs in 2009 and 2013 because his forwards couldn’t kick under pressure
Higgins, Owens are forwards who are woeful kicks
Wouldn’t back them in a set shot from 30m

Re: Kicking at goal
Membrey hit and miss
Higgins can’t kick a straight forward goal
Owens is a horrendous kick - which is why he isn’t a forward!
Butler kicks the ball 13 metres
King is unreliable
It’s heart in your mouth stuff
When Stringer, Jones and Langford are having a shot
Put your glasses down and pencil it in

Re: Kicking at goal
We would be ranked close to last in the competition for set shot conversion over the past 4 years

Re: Kicking at goal
Over the last 15 I’d guarantee we are dead last
A few years back our accuracy was 41%
Only 2020 did we have a positive record in front of goal
Not since the Gehrig days have we been reliable
All the defensive systems in the world don’t help you if you miss goals - because you keep the opposition in the game

Re: Kicking at goal
At one stage we had kicked 3-7 from set shots
They kicked 3-1
That’s 10 scoring shots to 4 for a one goal lead

This from the guy who told us coaches are overrated…
Now they’re responsible for AFL players missing from 20 out…
Insight there….

Re: Kicking at goal
The rot set in after we hired that corkhead, Ben Dixon. We went from bad to worse under his "tutelage".
Don't forget his best "technique" was to get the players to imagine the best sex they'd ever had, as they were lining up, and visualize their partner in that union standing behind the goals. That then became the target.
Genius! For some unknown reason, our goal-kicking became worse, and Dixhead was given the sack. No other team has adopted this technique, nor has anyone else hired him in that capacity. I wonder why?
Neither side has forgiven the other. Dixhead bags us whenever he can.

Re: Kicking at goal
Coaches
Responsible for two things
Selection
Structure
Brett Ratten was responsible for losses when he coached yeah
But Lyon is not when he coaches
Least you’re consistent
I thought allowing Nick Martin to get 44 (30 uncontested) was pretty good
About as good as when Sicily and Daicos got 40+ last year
Great structure there - send a forward up to stoppage allow a defender to get 45

Re: Kicking at goal
I will guarantee if Ross Lyon had the magical formula for kicking goals, he, A) Would have employed it over his coaching career & B) Would not be coaching us but making millions on a retainer.
Lyon can only put a structure in place for players to have the easier shot at goal. What they do from there is on the player.

Re: Kicking at goal
Fev used to kick 500 goals a week at training, how many are our forwards?
King has improved and is now our best shot.
Membrey and Sharman have regressed to just being average.
The rest are hopeless.
How many years has this been biting us in the ass?

Re: Kicking at goal
We should've put them away by halftime. The final blow was Stringer kicking the set shot from outside 50. Talk about a punishing lesson.
I wonder how Sharman, Higgins, and the other guilty parties felt having missed what should've been gimmies for AFL standard forwards.
Losing so narrowly was the salt being rubbed into the wounds. Surely, we have a designated kicking coach? Is it BJ, Caroll, or RTB? Who's teaching the Irishman the basics?
This unreliability in such an important skill reflects poorly on the coaches and the players.
RTB has been quick to clean out the non-performers. The two Walshes, Lethlean, Toce et al.
Who will take responsibility for the lack of competence in an area that has cost us too many games and a flag in 2009? Time to address the very inaccurate elephant in the room. Over to you, Andrew, and RTB!!

Re: Kicking at goal
To rub salt into the wounds, Stringer’s long goal that won them the game reminded me of Gavin Wanganeen’s match winning goal in the 2004 Preliminary final against Port.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.

Go have a look at the presser - Martin wasn’t hurting us at HT …St Kikda was hurting us at HT….but you knew that…after the fact …
But again ….coaches are overrated right? Or responsible for players who can’t kick 20 out OR who try round the corner kicks (Hi Rowan) when a drop punt will do??
Make up your mind….

Each player who missed tonight is fully aware of their shortfalls
They will be hurting more than us
It can only improve

Re: Kicking at goal
Look, the forwards are contracted to score 60 points. It's defence's job to keep opposition to 59. So it's the defence's fault.
Of course we could try a plan b and just crush teams when we can.
One lesson is Hastie. Arnie, Collard, Garcia have to play and Pou has to hear some home truths. After a while you need to really step up and be the real deal.
Forwards should be ashamed today. I wonder if they are.
Sincs can start hitting targets anytime he likes as well and stop trying to be overly cute. His kicking isn't the weapon it was last year just yet.
If we can't win games like today, and we couldn't, several changes needed. We should have beaten Cats, should have flogged Pies, should have beaten the Edge team easily, but we have no cohesion in attack. Forget top 4 of course, need to blood the future.

Re: Kicking at goal
You believe everything you hear in a presser
Explain HTF 27 at HT has had no effect on the game? Seriously, get off the kool aide ignoramous
He also defended his position with Daicos and Sicily last year - did you fall for that too???
He was s*** tonight in the box
Outcoached

Already obvious who they will be
Collingwood, Brisbane, Melbourne and Port Adelaide
St Kilda is playing for the minor finals.
