Re: Owens
Not a ruckman, not a forward, put him anywhere else.

Re: Owens
At least when he’s in the ruck he’s around the footy
It’s when they put a 190cm midfielder as the deepest KPF my mind boggles
wtf does Ross think he’s a key forward? Because he competes??
I’d rather he competes around the footy?!
He’s a shocking kick - as are most inside mids
He’s a contested bull
Play him in the centre square - rest him forward
To me it’s a fkn no brainer

Re: Owens
I wouldn’t mind trying him playing the Mason Wood role on a wing.
We could use his clearance work around the stoppages and marking power coming out of defence.

Re: Owens
Hasn’t got the skills of Wood or the running power
Surely he is a pure stoppage mid?
It’s like Carlton playing Paddy Cripps as a permanent forward
Sure he’d kick a goal or two or take a mark or two
But 8-10 clearances and 25-30 just might be a little more important

Should be on a constant rotation with Phillipou in the FWD line and midfieldB.M wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2024 8:49pm At least when he’s in the ruck he’s around the footy

Re: Owens
Yes, I wonder why the reluctance. Here’s a few possibilities:
He doesn’t have the tank.
He’s too valuable forward.
We need him to be second ruck.
I could cop the first one if it were true, but not so either of the other two. Find another second ruck

Re: Owens
I think bigcarl hit the nail on the head
Lyon sees Owens as our second ruck. I've heard Ross in several pre game interviews and he did it today as well. He declared that Owens will play second ruck.
I'd love to see Windy and Owens playing as first choice midfielders alongside their captain. Sebby is playing so well he can slot in on a wing or doing the job of a tagger.
Here's how I see it. There must be preferred spots for certain players. They take priority.
When certain players come back from injury, they also slot back into their preferred roles...and they take priority.
At the moment it's Seb, Steele, and 1 other who are the preferred mids...Owens is not a first choice midfielder in Ross's current team. Brad Crouch is.
Pou, Windy, Jones, and others who might line up at some centre bounces are just filling a role ....until Crouch returns.
It sort of runs counter to playing the kids and planning for the longer term, but it also fits in with the Rossy Lyon we remember. He has his favourites.

Re: Owens
Someone not something
LIam Henry, Brad Crouch, Mason Wood, Paddy Dow, Hunter Clark
Add just one and St Kilda defeats Essendon.
Just add all 5 and Max King, Dougal Howard (better than Zaine Cordy) & Jack Hayes (ahead of Cooper Sharman also frees Mitchito Owens from 2nd ruck)
The margin goes to 100points.

Re: Owens
It is interesting how people pot Ross through the lense of things like this being an example of him being too rigid/stubborn.
I see the non moving of Owens onto the ball as the best thing for his development.
I think Owens offers the most potential to the Saints long term as a medium/small forward who can pinch hit up the ground by going into the ruck.
He may be more damaging right now spending time on the ball but if you look at our best midfield/balance/22 he shouldn't get a look in on the ball with the following ahead of him.
Steele
Ross
Henry
Crouch
Clark
Dow
Windhager
Pou is around his mark as an onballer.
Then we have several others developing.
A win at all costs mentality would have Ross move Owens onto the ball during that game. As it would also have them sit on Martin but Ross instead as he said in the post game wanted to focus on getting what we're doing right first before we worry about them.
To be fair to him, we should have won by 4 goals regardless so the approach stacks up, execution let us down.
