Post: # 2046982Post Otiman »

Sample size of 1 match but it gives good insight into what we've been working on.

vs Geelong - 52.3% (2nd in the comp)

Clangers:
2023 - 60 (2nd last)
vs Geelong - 50 (5th in the comp)

Centre Clearances:
2023 -11 (2nd last)
vs Geelong - 7 (last)

Stoppage Clearances
2023 - 22.8 (3rd last)
vs Geelong - 32 (2nd in the comp)

Defensive 1v1 loss rate
2023 - 23.4% 5th in the comp
2024 - 27.3% 12th in the comp

What other stats have we changed significantly?

This is a big problem when you combine it with the fact that we only had 44 inside 50's (2nd last) - we averaged 52.1 last season.
Yes, we've lifted our effeciency, but if we're only getting 11 chances a quarter, then scoring is going to be very difficult.

The other glaring issue that only one of our players (Liam Henry) featured in the coaches votes. He got 2 votes.

As a team, we slept for large periods of the game. We let Holmes and Dempsey do what they liked. But when we were on for the brief and sporadic periods that we were, we played some really good, fast footy.

First relatively positive thread

I like it.

There were a lot of positives to take out of the match. Henry and Wilson are great additions to the side

Membrey and King look like they'll be having a good year.

Steele looks like he's back to his 2021 form (albeit wth a slightly different role under Lyon).

I think the coach was frustrated because we had a chance to beat the Cats on their home turf and we just needed a few things to go our way in that last quarter. Unfortunately we were lacking in a couple of areas and many of our players looked rusty.

Windy went to Max Holmes in the last quarter and kept him to just 3 possessions. That's his role. Hope we learn from that

I'm expecting a couple of changes for the match this Thursday and I hope Nas, Mason, the Brads and Snaggsy can lift for the game against the filth

Our center bounce clearance work is horrendous

it doesnt help when roma tapped to the opposition at times.
if we had a good ruck imagine how valuable Roma would be around the grd

I'd love to know what the game plan is regarding centre bounce. We look as if we're always looking to defend. It's as if we're expecting to be second to the ball.

When Roma does win the tap out, it's a total surprise. Our mids don't hunt the footy. They hunt the opposition mids and they wait to restrict and get a turnover.

I'd love Steele to be given a licence in the centre to hunt the ball first. Let your opponent come to you.

Henry was the big positive for mine.

A ball hunter that hogs the TV screen, that should be a stat.

If we had another ruck

Where would Ro play?!

He is a bog average forward, he isn’t fast enough to play in defence

Not good enough at ground level to be a mid

He is clearly a ruckman - his career proves this

2019 - Awesome
2020 - Average
2021 - Average
2022 - Better without Ryder
2023 - Awesome

Ryder won more taps at CB but averaged 8ppg
Marshall wins 18ppg when number 1 ruck
This decreases markedly when he shares the ruck

Marshall
Great ruckman - almost AA
Average forward

Ask our mids who they preferred in the ruck...Ro or Paddy?

I love Roma, but Paddy was a special player and an artist when it came to ruck work.

You can compare 2021 and 2022 when they played in the same side, but I thought I'd do a comparison of Rowan from last year (when he made AA squad of 40 in 2023) and Ryder from 2017. Both were dominant sole ruck for their respective teams

Ok then,

Give me a solution that stops my eyes hurting and my heart breaking every time I see Owen’s got to a centre ruck contest. Please tell me that’s because Lyon as zero alternatives when RoMa isn’t available at any given moment and it’s also highly desirable to Lyon himself that he finds a solution?

Or you think Lyon is happy with with his current structure?

If Lyons comments during last season were anything to go by when he said in a presser he’d like to see Steele light it up towards the pointy end then I’d say license has been authorised and issued…just now waiting to see it be given a run.

His high tackle count is great but it means he’s not first to the contest…thankfully Lyon has identified it.
