Schoenmaker

Made some errors very laconic at times a bit Howard esque ..but there is something about him and he has been playing for 5 minutes. I expect he will come on big time.

Has a lot in common with Howard.

Both good and bad.

Handy pick up but a work in progress for sure.

Lots to like . Knows how to put himself in the right positions. Once he gets some confidence, and matures ( decision making, concentration) he will be a very handy player. Reminds me of a cross between Wilkie and Battle the way he plays, with a bit of Dougal brain.

Made some mistakes as expected from a kid playing his first senior game. I predict he’ll be a very good player, good size and on Marvel, that left foot will be lethal. Might even be a sneaky chance for RD 1 if Battle doesn’t get up

He will be a beast in a few years time

Already 194cm and 90kg+

Could get to 196cm and 100kg+

Great intercept mark and a super left foot

Will give forwards plenty to worry about

I was critical of him in the first half but worked his way into the game, apart from that absolute coach killer 50m penalty that cost a goal. I don't think he has really earnt a spot at least for the first part of the season but could see him getting games later in the year depending on how the chips fall.

I prefer him to Howard right now. A better mark and kick already.

Promising, very promising. A debut against Geelong @Geelong is a bit too much to ask of the youngster though. So maybe against the Pies.

Took 11 marks today.
More than anyone else, in windy conditions.
Shows promise.

With Dougal doing a hammy, and his performance today, he must be a rough chance to debut in round 1.

RTB will probably go with the conservative approach and bring in the experienced Cordy. I must say I was impressed with how comfortable Schoey looked out there. He could end up as the biggest steal of his draft.

Definitely showed he has a big future. That pack mark in the last 1/4 was excellent, he is one of those players who has a longer reach than his height suggests.

There's some seriously harsh judges on here.

Excellent performance for his first AFL level hit out. Disposal was fantastic in the windy conditions, regularly looking to switch play or kick through the lines with purpose. Nothing like Dougal Howard in my opinion.

Yes I'd like to see him playing in better conditions. Looked good.

Think he was very good for where he is at in his career.

Dropped a few simple marks and gave away a few dumb free kicks- that's the Howard comparison on the negative.

Equally had some great spoils and marks and has a good long boot- that's the Howard comparison on the positive.

The idea that a comparison to Howard is a negative is an incorrect assumption. Most AFL teams would have Howard in their starting 18.

Yet to read anything harsh at all... was a pretty good start. Made some mistakes, did some good things. Dont think he's ready for seniors but thats ok, its his first season.

Might start on the bench as the tall back rotation. But our guys usually play 90% TOG.

Depends if both of Battle and Cordy play.

I agree. For a first game in a key defensive position he played quite well, 11 marks in windy conditions was outstanding, 3 more than Marshall who played all over the ground! That stat alone indicates he is better than Howard....

It's quite possible that Ross Lyon will back him in the same way he backed Phillipou in his first year.

I really don't agree with that at all. It was his 1st game. He went for the ball. Howard runs away from the ball. There is a big difference. I have no confidence in Howard unless there is no one within 20m of him. One on one he always gets beaten. Schoenmaker's confidence will improve our of sight this year. I reckon he will be the one that will keep Howard out of the team. I can see him play 20+ games this year.

Whether you like him or not, this is provably false. Dougal is actually quite good in this aspect of his game, in fact he is within 1% of Wilkie in this regard! Presumably you don't feel the same about WIlkie?

By the way, this is page two of results from 2023. There are statistically much better 1-on-1 defenders outside our club. I encourage you to have a play around and see what you find

https://www.wheeloratings.com/afl_stats.html?year=2023

Some stats I read earlier courtesy of Otiman:
7.1 spoils per game (11th in the league, League Leader Harris Andrews 9.6)
22.4% Defensive 1 on 1 loss rate (29th in the League, Wilkie 21.5%, League Leader Weitering 10.9%)
4.6 Pressure Acts per game (70th in the League, Wilkie 7.8 (17th), League Leader Jack Buckley 10.7)

There is no comparison between Wilkie and Howard.
You can prove anything with statistics except the truth.

Round 1 vs Cats & Tom Hawkins .. if we have no Battle and no Howard ... it's either Cordy or Schoenmaker ...
