Re: Break out smokeys
I just acknowledge achievement
Let’s just wait and see how he goes at Melbourne
My guess, injury free he does well, and I’m predicting they finish top 4

Re: Break out smokeys
If they don’t make the finals with
A midfield of
Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Langdon, Hunter
A backline of
May, Lever, Salem, Rivers, Tomlinson, Bowey
A Forward line of
Petty, Van Royen, Fritch, Pickett, Neale Bullen, Spargo, Billings
I’ll eat my hat - injury dependent
Really, with that list they should contend!!!
Collingwood, Brisbane, Melbourne, Carlton, Port
Are contenders imo

You can have all the talent in the world but if the culture is stuffed they will turn on themselves.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 04 Jan 2024 2:30pm If they don’t make the finals with

Re: Break out smokeys
Panicked in its last final, lost discipline. Lost 4 of 4 finals in last 2 years, coach reported to have undesireable behavioural issues; Board would be concerned about the culture. May is volatile, likely to be suspended a few games, Viney is a warrior but needs class around him, Lever has been worked out by good sides and does a lot of mouthing off. Oliver, Smith....well documented...The glue holding the team together could be Max and he must be getting battle weary. Going to be interesting to watch Dees progress. Anyway, what's the point of making top four and then caving.

Re: Break out smokeys
Teams like Melbourne, Richmond and Collingwood, always seem to have a standout player or maybe two, who get them over the line when things are close. Dusty, Gawn, Petracca, Moore, Daicos come to mind, and Joel Selwood at Geelong a few years back. These guys put in a super-human quarter to turn games. We need to hope one or two of our younger guys develops that killer instinct, especially on-ballers.

Re: Break out smokeys
It takes a contested ball beast to win games off their own boot. Jack Steele has been that for us in the past. Should be able to do it again this year. Add Owens and Pou to that list hopefully this year.

Steele will always give 100%. In the final last year, he got lots of possessions, but the GWS midfield won them the game by getting in the right positions and using the ball better.

Re: Break out smokeys
His possessions were effective actually. He had 38 with 18 contested and over 80% DE. You're giving an impression that (some people) could construe as he didn't impact the game.
He had a fair amount of clearances and intercepts and score involvements.
I agree that the GWS mids were better as a group. Even, Rowan Marshall's opponent had a very good game.
The problem with our midfield as a whole for that match, was that Steele's midfield team mates were below par and senior players like Crouch, let us down.
Gresh and Sinclair didn't get enough of the ball. Neither did our youngsters in Pou and Windhager
