Re: Saints milestones in 2024
Can't believe that hack Seb Ross will notch up 200 games.
Pretty sure most of our new recruits will have displaced him from the team before round 1.

Soft and weak and lacking the courage to have a go at piercing a much tougher target.

Completely understandable, you have limited amused moments to give on an annual basis so save them for that rare impossible opportunity.

Seb Ross
The worst 200 game, dual B&F, Captain, AA squad player ever!!!
There has never been such a maligned stk player in my memory
It’s like he was to blame for a a lean period?!
Being one of the best players in that period with Steven, Reiwoldt, Montagna, Geary I would say he was not the problem
The ones who couldn’t get a kick more so
IMO
The blame for the decade of darkness 2012-2019 was caused by Pelchen and Elshaug

It’s a tale of irony, and about a much less serous subject than you are equiped for. Re: Saints milestones in 2024
In fairness to Vortex (not that he needs my support), if memory serves, he’s always been more of a stauncher supporters of Ross.
Whilst he’s the butt of the joke here… his first post in this thread I interpreted to be a jape at Seb’s more relentless critics… which on this occasion IMO makes the lighthearted digs undeserved.
On the topic of Ross, my opinion is that the challenge is the extreme sides of either end of the middle.
Since he established himself in the top 22… Ross has had a few patches of time where his form has been poor worthy of a dropping or patches of time where he hasn’t been close or as good as he can be… but at no point has he ever really been at the needs to be delisted, liability stage.
Likewise, he’s had a few patches of sustained high performance threatening to go up to an A-Lister level but has seldom been regarded as a superstar though IMO on talent and on best form… he could have climbed into that category.
So he sits in that category where both his best and worst have been too heavily scrutinised. By and large he’s mostly been good and a bit more consistently good the last few years even if it wasn’t his peak form.
Suggestions that he is the most maligned player in our history don’t ring true to me at all… yes he has copped a lot of flak as have many but IMO most of it was born of the frustration of him not taking the next step more consistently and earlier as opposed to the majority deriding his complete contribution.
There’s been a lot of calls to trade him over the years but less suggest delisting or that he’s no good. That’s come from few forumites (but it has happened) and trumpeted more loudly by those critics and the critics of those critics IMO

Re: Saints milestones in 2024
Anything less than celebrating Seb's achievement absolutely, no qualifications, is unworthy. Respect mon! Well played.
Try as I might I couldn't rationalise Vtex's adverse comments. If you mean the opposite of what you say/write that's too Orwellian for me. Possibly no one expects any 200 gamer to be in the votes every game, or do they, maybe 200 games -most in rubbish sides with rubbish coaches - is too small a sample.

Seb was overrated and over paid for some time, if you look at a competition wide comparison and his supremacy at St.Kilda for a while.skeptic wrote: ↑Wed 17 Jan 2024 6:43pm In fairness to Vortex (not that he needs my support), if memory serves, he’s always been more on the side of the stauncher supporters of Ross.

He was up for trade at one point but had no inclination to leave unless the club could benefit. So, he stayed. He is a great servant, I wanted him trade because I believed a Victorian club would give a frdp. It didn't happen in Victoria.
All that aside, if he is fit, he will find a role. I reckon we will see a different zseb this year and I'll salute his 200th and add his memorabilia to my collection when he gets it.

Re: Saints milestones in 2024
200 games and a B&F is a pretty damn good career.
And still plenty to come, now with some more cavalry in the midfield Seb can play to his strengths instead of where the team needs him.

Re: Saints milestones in 2024
Haha
That’s wickedly provocative.
a slight sleight
As was the original Secret Kiel’s post.
acting innocent has a charm of its own
I think Ross has now entered the protected zone. He is old and he is dignified. Immune from attack. It is acknowledged or tacitly accepted that he is barely top 22, and so he has nothing to prove. He is a senior citizen as they say. I don’t think he’s a dangerous player like the great Shane Grambeau was, but I am quite curious to see what happens now. What does the pot belly stove chief have in store for him?
I thought he was good the last couple of years but I did t watch during his heyday and all I can say about that is, ‘he must have been good’ or ‘we must have been bad’ for him to be our elite star and captain prospect.
We have a massive no-man’s land between the stability that Ross-Steele-Crouch (+ Jones ‘n Byrnes) so called ‘vanilla’ trio mid-field provides and the unproven formula of relying purely on Hunter, Pou, and the new ‘force’. Basically, as fans, none of us would pull the old engine unit out yet and Seb Ross is an important component of that old engine. It’s like a 138 Holden Grey motor. Keeps going, but ain’t a GP formulation
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: Saints milestones in 2024
Your memory is working well.
Even followed his career whilst at Freo, probably because an immediate family member has a business relationship with him but also because I've always admired how he goes about it. Having said that the man has limitations. faults and makes mistakes (who doesn't) and I have no problem discussing them on an anonymous footy forum, it's why he gets paid the big bucks.
When he came onboard for the second time my cynicism was always about St Kilda doing what St Kilda does and selling the line to supporters that a change of coach is all that is needed to fix our woes.
Still taking a wait and see approach as to what success the Ross regime might bring. However if he doesn't succeed I will have the same opinion I have had for most of our past
sacked coaches back to Sheldon, and that is it's not all on the coach and the failing will most likely have more to do with the failing of tbe club as a whole. Just don't buy into the whole head coach accountability culture that is part of the AFL industry.
Also reiterating...a Sebby fan for no other reason than he's a trier and is committed to the cause....oh and at the top of his game he plays some really nice footy. For exhibit A go and watch the first 6 to 8 games of last season, arguably one of the reasons we started the year so well.

Re: Saints milestones in 2024
Almost worthy of providing an annual SS award in honour of
the most maligned player.
Can think of plenty others that would be on the honour board before Sebby.
I reckon I could almost kick off with 5 players from the 2009 GF team just for starters.
