Of course they are but what did he do for the club?

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Roughead resigns
Not sure what he did or didn’t do?!
His role was not defined- to supporters
Maybe it was his input that resulted in us drafting someone or maybe not? I don’t know??
But to say he was s*** (or great) is difficult to do

Re: Roughead resigns
Nope. Applying pressure is fine but to do a drag-down tackle from behind when he had already gotten rid of the ball was plain sloppy and a good example of why assistant coaches/staff shouldn't get that involved in training drills.

It was game sim
Injuries happen
Maybe Dougal Howard shouldn’t have been in the marking contest that blew Kings shoulder?
Clubs often use assistants in drills to make up the numbers

I have no impression of JR whatsoever.
He never says much. No one ever talks about him positively or negatively. Couldn’t tell you anything about him.

Perhaps the objects of the exercise were:
to try to get some IP from a winning era; and
show the team you don't need charisma to go top.
Of course looking at Maynard, May and Hawkins that second one is sort of obvious.

Excellent post. Then Lyon added strategies to develop a gameplan around talent identification and player movement.
We shouldn't reward potential, we should encourage to develop into success.

Hence the recruitment of Roughead
He was part of a 3 peat and captain of Hawthorn and a Coleman Medallist!

Re: Roughead resigns
While I respect his career as footballer and his abi,oty to back himself and lead.
Roughie never had a clearly defined role.
12 months before his departure, he himself said, he was a Football Operations assistant or Jack of all trades.
Basically as in intern to Leathlean and we know the strong relationship Simon has had in the past with his interns.
He came to learn and provide leadership mentoring.
He did that with the established group of seniors first.
We promoted Steele and Wilkie and got rid off most of our senior players.
Then they sent him to the women and he mentored them. He was cut off from recruiting. Gallagher went first, Toce went second and Roughie jumped ship.
He and Allan's roles remained largely undefined following the club review and sacking of Ratten and he left before he was let go.
Just unfortunate timing but as a result, the review led to Harvey, Hayes and Goddard to coaching and development roles, Misson, Lyon Allan and Dalrymple to football operations roles and Lethlean is signing checks and checking everything is signed.
I'm sure Roughie learnt a lot about the transition from player to staff but was shocked that he had to work and didn't get 8 weeks off.

Re: Roughead resigns
He may still be connected to the Danny Frawley Centre.
We invited many experts to come in and set things up around our club.
Some have been invaluable and moved on because there skill set is elite and required everywhere.
One by one, they seem to be replaced by better experts and the assistants like Roughie will be replaced by our own people or become one of our own people.

Re: Roughead resigns
The club should have given Lyon a new directive 10 years ago, instead of just advancing what Thommo started.
Instead we opened the door up to the AFL to throw up ideas people and see what happens.
That's over now, Ross is back and has the full support of the club and we are going to be a destination club, leader in Victoria of player development and recruitment and our facilities and staff will be elite and maintained by our community involvement. Book mark it.

Re: Roughead resigns
What makes us any better or different to other clubs?
Every club now has elite facilities
Every club has development
Every club has academies (the only club it really benefits is GC)

Re: Roughead resigns
Ok. Go back to the video of Roughie explaining how our facilities are much better than Hawthorns, maybe you will believe a 3 peat premiership player and ex-Captain.
Compare the location of our two academy centres with Melbourne and Hawthorn's.
In just going to have to respect your world view BM. You seem locked into it and clearly you have worked hard to develop it.
The answer to most of the things you don't believe is because as a St.Kilda supporter, you believe effort on the field is only way teams get better.
I think you are wrong, so does the AFL.
You reap what you sow.
Maybe we can reflect on Rod Owen and the mess we made of development t and the little league. We werent alone but we never revisited the systems because they hurt.
Auskick took over and expanded.
Then the NGA gave underexposed kids a chance.
Now our academy is the best on the Southern side of the city.
It's a truly National comp with all STATES involved and we are well placed to change our history.
You can just wait till magically we win one more flag and then become a destination club, but it doesn't work that way. Sorry.

Re: Roughead resigns
Interesting
Better than Hawthorn
Hawthorn were the first to relocate training facilities in 2000 to Waverley and early 2000s had amongst the best facilities at Wav Park. They are now 20 years dated and hence they are moving
The ground in Mulgrave is pristine and the facilities are by no means s***
Every other club has had a facility upgrade in the last decade
And all are elite
Every other club has a development program
Every other club has an academy- which are basically pointless imo
Every other club has the same player acquisition process - draft/trade/rookie
Every club has a salary cap and soft cap
There is nothing to make us any more special than any other club. We are one of 18 clubs all vying for success
There is NO guarantee of success

Re: Roughead resigns
So what you are saying is Hawthorns facilities are 17 years old and 12 months ago were rated by Roughie as not as good as ours.B.M wrote: ↑Fri 12 Jan 2024 2:08pm Interesting

They won't be leaving them any time soon and they aren't likely to spend any money on them.
Tassie won't be handing out anymore cash and all their Board members are bailing out.
They were the only Victorian club not to establish a new membership record and their 3 peat coach dumped them.
They have a nice young midfield, I wonder how long they keep them.
They will want stability but with the $100m developed planned for 9 years and nowhere near starting, escalating to $130m and rising, I'd say we have the best 2 facilities in the region and they can only hope they can match us in the next decade.
'Gamechanger': Hawks to begin construction of $100m facility - https://www.afl.com.au/news/866406
That was a while ago.
Then in December 2023

No mention of budget and a video update of progress from 2019.

Hawthorn facilities are the worst on the Southern side of the city and their Board is imploding. Those who set it up and left when it got difficult are pleading that they continue and not make a laughing stock of themselves.
They better make finals soon or they will continue to lose their members, who by the way, live in our development zones too.
The VFL team in Box Hill are miles away. Maybe the Hawks can be a VFL team seeings Tassie don't want them. That would be hilarious.
