Training wed 6th
Had a look, long session, lots of 10 min drills, running and boxing training finish
Last year they ran 200s this year it was 100s with short rests
All first year players did about 2/3s of training
Higgins did not train, bike and pool
Windhager extremely fit, trained well
Jones in the gym on the bike
Collard is tiny, wafer thin and about 5’10 he will be a while off. A few areas to learn and improve- moves well
Crouch in the gym on the bike
Ross did not see
Wanganeen Milera very smooth, looks taller than 187, probably because he’s skinny
Hill very fit and bubbly- could play another 4 years
Steele running laps
Owens laps and in the gym - wandered out at the end - is a big lad
Clark I’ve been his harshest critic in regard to his conditioning- but he looks a little fitter and is moving well
King on the bike and in the pool
Byrnes trained well. Hard runner
Stocker, I know why he’s not aerobic- he has tree trunk legs! Powerful footballer with good skills
Dow super impressive outstanding at stoppage real burst and good skills
Butler in gym on bike
Keeler trained fully and was a marking target in full ground drill - has dropped weight and looks fitter
Hayes went to the pool
Marshall trained fully, just a good player and is a midfielder or KPP trapped in a ruckmans body. Moves so well around the ground
Howard trained fully
Cordy trained full and looked good, still runs like he’s in quick sand
Wilson, fit as you can get, smoother but hard runner with neat skill. Taller than his profile about 6’2 imo will be a gun
Henry trained fully, super impressive moves so well, very good skills
Hastie still a bit of development to do, made some mistakes. don’t think he’s 190?
Phillipou looks different definitely stronger and fitter. Trained exclusively with the mids, very vocal and confident. Last year initially I thought he was a gun, a steal at 10. Then he really plateaued and I was even a bit concerned - today he looksd every bit a gun
Battle trained fully - fit

Schoenmaker is a big lad with a cannon leg. has a lot to learn but has size and talent. Really a steal and should have gone top 30 can play
Membrey trained fully
Webster trained full
Allison trained fully and looked ok very fit
Van Es in the gym and wandering around the ground. Is a big boy, very raw and needs development
Wood in the gym
Paton very fit trained well
Garcia may well be a steal, moves well, good skills.
Sinclair as per normal no mullet massive legs he’s a gun
Bonner beautiful kick looks fit
Campbell did not see
Hotton running laps
McLennan trained about half of the drills looked to be on a modified program
Heath trained fully. So raw. Tall and aggressive but still needs to get fitter and stronger. Big year of development for him
Sharman moved well, is fit, has sticky fingers and moves well. Wish he was 6’5 and 95 kegs
Wilkie trained fully and a pro
O’Connell is a striking athlete- bigger than his listed size. Moves very well. Bit lost in a few sim drills.
Caminiti in the gym and on bike. Came out at the end - he is a massive unit!
Goddard, Enright, Harvey, Hayes, Carroll ran training

Plenty of competition for spots. These young guys are setting such a strong standard. The 18 year olds see the guys who are one or two years older and it's a massive confirmation of the work they need to do, and it will give them some urgency around their own physical and football development.
All this will serve us well as a club for the next few years.
Having Lyon in charge will make sure the standards will keep improving.
After 12 years of mediocre standards, appalling drafting, and sub standard coaching, we are finally heading in the right direction

Another training report
Bigfooty Training Report Wed 6/12

Small rehab group trained away from the main group. This included Steele, King & Owens. Steele & Owens ran laps. Both Owens & Steele looked in great physical condition and as mentioned on Monday, Owens looking awesome.
Others absent were Olly Hotton, who also ran laps. Hotton looks to have put on some significant size since being drafted and definitely has an AFL body. I guess the challenge is whether he has gotten over his back issues, but he tends to be one of the forgotten youngsters on our list.
Hayes & Van Ess walked past on their way to the pool. Hayes looked to me like he has trimmed down and was dwarfed by Van Ess who is a massive unit.
Also noticed that Hugo Garcia joined the man group half way through training and got involved with the main group. He definitely wasn't part of the rehab group (who were wearing red tops). Hopefully he is through the worst of his hamstring issues.
Today's drills focused once again on ball movement (skill execution). Started with 3 x groups all rotating through various drills with a focus on skill and ball movement. (Handballs & kicking).
The main drill was moving the ball out of defence with a focus on switching and providing overlap run. There was also a drill which focused on quick ball movement with the coaches emphasising outnumbering at the contest. Interestingly on one occasion someone didn't switch and instead went straight down the middle. He was quickly reminded by one of the coaches (I think it was Carroll) that he needed to follow the drill (ie, switch the ball).
I must say that the skill level today was much better than Monday. Perhaps that's because players were cooked after the 3km TT and skills were down due to fatigue.
I'm really excited about Darcy Wilson - he moves so gracefully and his skills are sublime. Quick, neat ball user and all of his disposals have 'purpose'. His handballs in particular are executed with a lot of vigour and always seem to hit the target. Arie Schoenmaker's kicking is a dead set weapon (he just needs to build a fitness base) but I wouldn't be surprised in he sneaks a couple of games towards the back end of the season. He has an AFL ready body - just needs an AFL tank as he seems to fatigue quickly.
Isaac Keeler another who moves gracefully. He was matched up against Max Heath and Keelers's athleticism really shone through.
Paddy Dow will be a great pick up. His skills today were excellent. He hit a lot of targets by foot and seems to have integrated well into the group. I really like Bonner - he's got great skills and I can se him playing off half back. He trained really well today. Liam Henry also stood out - he glides across the ground. His kicking is a bit hit and miss though. Nailed a few bullet passes, but also butchered a couple as well.
A few who didn't train included Higgins, Butler, Ross, Crouch, Hayes & Van Ess.
Overall, a really impressive hit out today. I'm really excited by our young group, but we need to give them time. Kudos to our recruiting team.

Had an injection/small procedure on his knee. Just waiting for it to settle. Looks Uber fit and strong

Wonder out loud if the early start (6 Mar.) to the season means changes to last year's preseason and the possibility we won't be as fit initially in order to manage players right through.

The majority of our players don't appear to have dropped fitness since the season ended.

Exactly.
By 2025, we will be setting the standards on training schedules and readiness.
We have already forgotten our fitness at the beginning was what got us to finals in the end.
Now its just going to be game style holding us back. It just how long.
Our future core are going to be speed and endurance freaks.

the forwards coach has an important issue in regard to strategy to resolve, i.e. how much do you base planning and drills on Max being fit and available, and where are Owens and Caminiti going to slot in; with what roles. Can Membrey and Sharman play in the same side and be effective (selectors thought so v GWS final). All hinges on how fit is Max?

Fwd lines are definitely the problem with the teams we play and lose to.
The running and possession game is based on power forwards and goal sneaks.
We have 3 in development and King.
They are all under 25.
Players like Membrey and Billings are high half forwards and useless in a running game for scoring. We need goalscoring mids.
Our fifty usually has 3 defenders waiting before we get to high half forward.
