Is Jack Sinclair a ‘First-choice midfielder’?

Post: # 2037381Post shanegrambeau »

-a genuine starting mid?

I saw Jake’s SaintsTV YouTube video where he says these draft and trade developments means that Sincs can be more of a full-time midfielder and I winced.

What do you think?

Am I being too precious, guarding Jack from the rigors of a full-time midfield occupation?

Does he have the physicality and physical attributes to improve our team performance across an entire season if he is a mid? Will it shorten his career? Increase his injury risk profile? What shuffling of the cards is needed?

Leave him at HB

He’s a dual AA there

It’s arguably the most important position

He can move through the middle of the ground

I expect there will be multiple players who can rotate around the ground when Sincs feels a need to get into the upfield action.

Is Sincs required in the square? He is damaging around throw-ins and has a dozen high clearance games but he is an AA defender.

I'd be looking to get Windy in there more as a blocker and power up Owens and Phillpou for more centre clearance work over the off season.

No!

Why mess with a player’s strength?

Jack needs to remain at HB for the majority of games. We need his rebound there.

Jake from SaintsTV is a bit of a Saints Pollyanna and sometimes not that realistic.

Agreed. He's a 2 time AA half back. He only went through the midfield because we didnt have other decent options.

I think he stays at HB next season with only occasional midfield minutes depending on game situations..

Our opponents would be delighted if they didn't have to worry about Jack Sinclair rebounding off half back.

He is fabulous off half back and pretty decent through the guts. I'd say the occasional foray into centre bounces is ok for a change up, but 80% of the hbf

One of the best HBs in the comp, not a natural midfielder but can add some zip and ball movement if moved there for part of a game.

Nope. Elite half back who can have a run through the middle when a spark is needed but I don't think he should be a full time mid.

I seriously think we should consider rotating Sinclair with Windy and Clark, with the Clark starting mid, Windy on the bench and Sinc at running back.

Wanganeen and Hill can drop back when needed but let's get them controlling the middle of the ground.

5 established outside play makers.

Owens and Pou can help Steele and crouch with grunt and clearance work.

And hopefully Wilson and Collard could develop nicely as high half fwd/mids.

Costs money to do that.

Tasmania is a big reason why the club will be hitting the draft again over the next few years and won’t be trading its early draft picks.

You should never trade early picks

First rule of drafting

Don’t trade a first rounder - unless it’s an established star u23yo

Second rule
Only trade 1 of your round selections in any one draft
Ie/ if you trade a second rounder you can’t trade third or fourth

You MUST continually build from the bottom and the top will take care of itself

Jack was drafted in 2015 and spent the first 5 years as a good ordinary player running through the midfield. He was not an automatic selection as a midfielder but was often a rotation through the bench.
Then he was given a chance to play off half back and his game has become elite becoming one of the most dangerous runners and deliverers of the ball in the game. Why would we want to weaken the team by moving our best player away from the role where he has become the best in the game.

Champion Data ranked Sinclair as elite long before anybody else noticed him.

We have recruited backups for half back and midfield. The best makeup is still unknown.

IMO Sinclair at half back then into the stoppages in the last third of the game is great for impact - almost like a sub.

You can’t guarantee getting the selection right

But you should guarantee having a selection in the fist round

Unless a ridiculous deal is on offer
Like an AA star at 18-22yo

You don’t jeopardise the future for the now in any circumstance

Unfortunately we had plenty of picks in the right range to get it right, but we didn't. The rest doesn't matter, after that.

The first 2 rules, improve your chances, they guarantee nothing.

Did you see Geelong’s draft record in the 2010-2022 space?
And compare that to Gold Coasts?

Different planets.

I think you can’t generalise.
